CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

03/10/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 10, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

NBC has bid farewell to Joey again, pulling it from the schedule and replacing it with Most Outrageous Moments on Tuesdays at 8pm.  Joey was back on the schedule this past Tuesday for the first time in a while, though the show failed to drum up much business, ranking fifth at 8p and again at 830p, and averaging a 4 share in the A18-49 demo.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *NBC has ordered up 8 more episodes of Deal or No Deal from Endemol USA with host Howie Mandel, with plans to continue airing the show – Monday and Fridays as the 8p kicker to the evening.  With this most recent order, NBC will have 30 episodes.

And no big surprise here — Fox has renewed House for next season. The show has done well on its own, and in recent weeks following American Idol has performed spectacularly well, retaining the lion’s share of its lead-in audience.

HBO’s Six Feet Under is being reincarnated at Bravo, in a syndication deal estimated to be worth approx $15 million at $250k per episode for all five seasons, according to Variety.  Set to debut on Bravo this fall, airing weekly. The license term is for four years.

Bravo had a big night on Wednesday with the premiere of Black. White. at 8p and the finale of Project Runway at 10p, and the premiere of Top Chef at 11p.  According to Nielsen Media Research numbers, Black. White debuted with 3.9 million viewers and an A18-49 rating of 2.1/6.  Project Runway pulled in a 3.4 million viewers, and 2.4 million in the A18-49 demo giving it a 1.9/5 demo rating for the hour.  And finally, Top Chef kicked off its new season at 11p (will air at 10p in subsequent weeks) with 1.3 million viewers.

MTV’s series premiere of 8th & Ocean earned a 2.8 P12-34 rating and reached 4.3 million viewers. A day after its premiere, the show was the most streamed content on MTV’s Overdrive. As well, The Real World: Key West has generated over 500,000 streams online, making it one of Overdrive’s top programs.

TV One’s new half-hour lifestyle series Wet Paint will premiere March 30 at 830p, giving viewers an inside look at the lives of artists and entrepreneurs Maurice Jasper and Michael Wellington who own Maurice’s Pieces, a West Oakland custom spray paint shop that changes cars, motorcycles and other objects into art. Wet Paint is from Michael Hoff Productions.

mtvU has collaborated with MSN and Boston University on a riches-to-rags comedy pilot, Roller Palace, created and produced over 15 months entirely by BU Film and Television Department students. It premiered on March 9 at Arclight Cinemas in Los Angeles, and will debut on-air and online March 20. Also, BU Sophomore and mtvU development deal recipient Andrew Karlsruher covered the entire production process for the mtvU reality series, Breaking the Sitcom. Episodes of the series are airing now on mtvU and mtvU Über, at mtvU.com.

Biography Channel’s new show, NASCAR Driven to Win, will be promoted through a VOD combination of 3-5 minute vignettes on all the drivers featured in the series, as well as All Access features. Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Cox Cable systems are offering the program, as is the TIVO Showcase with Direct TV.

The Tube Music Network has signed a distribution agreement with Tribune Broadcasting Company, which has stations in nine of the country’s top 10 markets, and 18 of the top 30. The Tube uses a new broadcast technology called digital multi-casting, where eligible viewers receive the network free over-the-air on television sets equipped with digital tuners and on the digital cable tier where available. Viewers can also buy music they see and hear on the Tube immediately, whether online or on the phone.

Showtime Networks Inc. and the Smithsonian Institution have created Smithsonian Networks. Smithsonian On Demand, the venture’s first programming service, will offer branded, original content from the Smithsonian. The network will develop, launch, and operate Smithsonian-branded television programming, including original docs and event coverage for distribution to multi-channel video distributors and new media platforms.

More Affiliation Deals:

  • The CW and ACME Communications, Inc. signed long-term affiliation agreements for seven current WB affiliate stations. The addition increases The CW’s national coverage to almost 60% of the country, including 26 of the top 30 markets. The newly-signed affiliates are: KWBQ/Albuquerque-Santa Fe; WBXX/Knoxville; WBDT/Dayton; WTVK/Ft. Myers-Naples; WIWB/Green Bay-Appleton; WBUI/Champaign-Springfield-Decatur; and WBUW/Madison.  In a series of separate deals, The CW also announced four other new affiliates: WHCP/Charleston-Huntington; WPXT/Portland-Auburn; KPXJ/Shreveport, WBRL/Baton Rouge.
  • Fox’s MyNetworkTV is now in 45% of the US with these six new affiliates: KPDX/Portland, KSMO/Kansas City, WRBU/St. Louis, WNYA/Albany, WISC/Madison and WKBT/LaCrosse-Eau Claire.

And….as if you needed reminding …. The Sopranos returns to HBO on Sunday night at 9p.  See you there!

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *ABC‘s Him and Us about a British rocker and his manager, has signed Kim Cattrall as the manager, and Anthony Stewart Hall as a gay rock star. The project is exec produced by Sir Elton John

Also at ABC, the comedy pilot A Day in the Life chronicles a young couple’s wedding preparations from each participants perspective over the course of a full television season.  That show has added Wendie Malick to play the mother of the bride.

And Dylan McDermott could be back on ABC with his casting in the pilot project A House Divided, about a farm community in the midwest going to task with the Government.

Fox‘s comedy pilot Julie Reno, Bounty Hunter, about a single mom trying to support her family, has cast Annie Pott’s as the bounty hunter’s mother.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Seeta Ziegler becomes VP/Sales in Los Angeles for Current TV. Also, Kevin Brown becomes Director/Sales and Ted Aerni becomes Account Executive; both are based in New York.

Ronnie Beason is upped to EVP/Director of Planning for Carat USA. Ronnie will direct training programs and supervise the overall planning for Carat USA, working with Carat Insight and managing directors across the country to insure that Carat’s research, tools and industry knowledge are shared throughout Carat USA.

Also at Carat USA, Mike Haggerty is upped to EVP/New York Managing Director. Mike will oversee and support the activity of all New York-based media directors in the areas of client retention, profitability and expanded services and lead the New York media group’s efforts in new business while continuing to integrate Carat USA planning with other Carat Americas business units.

NBC Entertainment has upped Mary Ann Wolf to Director/Current Series, and promoted Meredith Ahr to Director/Alternative Programming & Development.  Mary Ann reports to Erin Gough Wehrenberg, SVP/Current Series, and will oversee ER, The West Wing, Surface, Conviction and the upcoming The Black Donnellys.  Meredith reports to Craig Plestis, SVP, and will be responsible for the untitled Simon Cowell variety project and several other upcoming alternative series.

Douglas Segers becomes Sales Manager/New Accounts for National Geographic Digital Motion, reporting to Jocelyn Shearer, Director of Worldwide Digital Footage Sales/National Geographic Digital Media. Douglas will be responsible for managing all West Coast advertising and corporate accounts, as well as pursuing new accounts and opportunities in the interactive gaming and technology industries.

GSN’s SVP/Programming Ian Valentine will have his last day at the network today, revealing only that he has a “wonderful new opportunity that I’ve made the tough choice to pursue.”  Taking over interim responsibilities of the position will be Pres/CEO Rich Cronin.  Give Ian a holler and wish him well!

Wednesday – A18-49 Analysis:  Fox led on Wednesday night with an 8.5/22 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. CBS was #2 with a 3.7/10.  Fox easily won the 8p hour with a 12.3/32 for an original American Idol, six times the ratings and share of CBS and ABC, whose sitcoms tied with 2.0/5 each, and much farther ahead of UPN America’s Next Top Model series premiere, which earned a 1.9/5. However, among the slightly young A18-34 crowd, America’s Next Top Model ranked #2 with a 2.5/7 for the first hour, and an 3.0/11 for the 9p hour, tying with Fox in share. Fox held its lead through the 9p hour with a 4.8/12 for Bones, narrowly beating CBS’ Criminal Minds  — which had a 4.6/11. At 10p, CBS took the lead with a 4.6/12 for CSI: NY.

Friday Fun Fact:  The name Cynthia means “moon” in Greek.  Of course it also means a large green silkworm.  It’s all in the perspective.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1969: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassin, James Earl Ray, is convicted of King’s murder and sentence to 99 years in prison. Ray’s well-known hatred of black people notwithstanding, he recanted his guilty plea three days later, claiming he had been set up by a gun dealer in Montreal.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:  Time and time again Master Chen Ming Kan said, “As quickly as you can, snatch the pebble from my hand.”  Caine of course was too slow all but once.  What did Kan say to him each time he missed?   “WHEN YOU CAN TAKE THE PEBBLE FROM MY HAND, IT WILL BE TIME FOR YOU TO LEAVE.”  Kudos to:  Mathew Taukus-Zenith Media/NY; Elizabeth Keller-MMT/NY; Hank Bordowitz-The Bordowitz Media Werx/Suffern NY; Gloria L. Today’s Trivia Question: Two of America’s celebrated superstars finally collide in this film with cops, robbers, a large bank robbery, and loads of gun fire on the streets of LA.  What ’90s film was this? (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
