Good Morning. It’s Friday, June 9, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
With dueling lawsuits armed and triggered, Cablevision Systems yesterday announced it would delay the launch of its new network DVR system until perhaps mid to late fall. The next legal step is a hearing on October 30, and the outcome of that could well decide when – and perhaps if – the proposed DVR service will launch. The initial test was expected to launch this month on Long Island, NY. This delay could help cable operators compete against the direct-broadcast satellite and telephone providers.

In2TV, the free online service that showcases TV series from AOL Television and Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution, has launched two new channels. Gone But Not Forgotten TV will showcase recent, critically acclaimed, yet canceled series, their never-before-seen episodes and pilots, trivia, clips and games. Some shows featured include The Michael Richards Show, Wanda at Large, The Ben Stiller Show, and the cult favorite Max Headroom. Get Real TV will offer unscripted, relationship and court series from the recent past like The People’s Court, ElimiDate and Change of Heart. Both channels can be found at http://www.aol.com/in2tv.
Oxygen’s 6 premiere of The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency on Wednesday at 10p delivered the network’s highest household and W18-24 ratings for a series premiere. The HH rating was 0.6 with an average of 412,000 households tuning into the hour premiere; and the W18-24 rating was a 0.8. Traffic to Oxygen’s website, oxygen.com, also doubled during the show’s premiere.
CBS now offer six more shows on iTunes – CSI, Survivor, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY, Numb3rs and NCIS. All the episodes are from the most recent season as well as one or two previous seasons depending on the show, and are available at the standard iTunes price of a buck ninety-nine per episode.
Animal Planet is known for airing quintessential television events with people replaced by animals – have you seen the Puppy Bowl on Super Bowl Sunday? This time – it’s a reality show. Think Real World or Big Brother, only a feline version. Yes, cats all from a variety of rescue groups and shelters living in the Meow Mix House on Madison Avenue in NYC equipped with cameras to follow all the action. When voted out, the extradited kitty is sent to live with its newly-adopted family, arriving with a year’s supply of Meow Mix food. The cat show kicks off on June 16, airing in three minute episodes at 9p and continuing for ten weeks.
I rarely talk about celebrities and their private lives, but this quote just gave me pause. Brad Pitt says the birth of his daughter was “truly peaceful.” Having been present at more than a couple of births, “peaceful” is the word I’d use only if I were experiencing it from the next building.
Michael Hoff Productions, Inc., a U.S.-based independent production company, and the Amsterdam-based distributor Off the Fence have signed their third deal for a nine-hour package of high-definition programming that will air in the U.S. on the National Geographic Channel. The package will roll out in fourth quarter 2006 and into early 2007 and will include a variety of specials and miniseries on science, engineering, history and culture.
Dan Suratt has been named EVP/Digital Media and Business Development at Lifetime Networks. He will oversee the strategic, operational, editorial and business development aspects of the network’s expanded digital media business.
E! Networks has promoted Bill McLean to VP, where he will supervise the network’s domestic and international mobile content distribution and the domestic terrestrial and satellite radio efforts. In addition, E! has appointed Adrian Seto as Senior Manager/New Media – Asia Pacific, reporting to Bill McLean. Adrian will expand the network’s content further into the mobile and online areas in this region and develop new product initiatives. He will also work closely with the network’s international TV group in Hong Kong to establish cross-promotional and branding opportunities.
The CW has hired Thom Sherman as EVP/Drama Development, where he will oversee the creation of all drama programming for the network, reporting to Dawn Ostroff, President/Entertainment. For the last five years, Thom has led the drama development department at ABC as SVP, responsible for series such as Lost, Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy, among others.
Bob DeSena has joined Mediaedge:cia as Managing Partner/Director of Active Engagement. He will manage the company’s analytics, insights, ROI and communications planning for North America, reporting to Charles Courtier, Global Chairman.
Hilary Rushnell is the new Manager of Development at Lion Television USA, reporting to Tracy Green, EVP/Lion Television USA. Hilary will be based in the company’s West Coast offices, where she will work with Green to develop original formats and transform the company’s reality, game show and documentary genres from the UK for U.S. networks and cable outlets.

Wednesday – A18-49 Analysis: FOX did a tap dance to win Wednesday night with a 3.3/10 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. NBC had a second place showing with 2.8/8, then CBS 2.2/7, UNIV 1.6/5, ABC 1.5/4, UPN 0.8/2, WB 0.7/2 and TELE 0.4/1. The repeat of FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance at 8p won the hour by a toe with 2.5/8; the first hour of NBC’s Dateline was a tenth of a point less at 2.4/8. FOX gained more viewers at 9p with the second helping of So You Think You Can Dance at 4.2/12. CBS brought in the last primetime hour with an encore of CSI: NY at 2.7/8.
