Good morning. It’s Friday, June 6, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Chapman Entertainment unveils plans to set up its own production studio based in Altrincham, Cheshire. Scheduled to be up and running this July, the first show to be produced is the second season of Chapman’s preschool stop-motion animated series Roary the Racing Car. In addition to Roary the Racing Car, Chapman also produces the preschool animated series Fifi and the Flowertots. Prior to this both series were animated by Cosgrove Hall.
DIC Entertainment inks broadcast deals across Europe, Middle East and Africa for several of its properties:
- Strawberry Shortcake is acquired by TV2 (Denmark), TV4 (Sweden), Mnet (South Africa), TiJi/Canal J (France), M6 (France), Tiny Pop (UK), Modern Times (Greece), SIC (Portugal), VRT (Belgium), TSR (Switzerland) and Mediaset (Italy). Additionally, a deal for the property is signed with new home entertainment partner Fox Video Europe (France and French-speaking Benelux).
- New terrestrial broadcast deals for Dino Squad, include Mediaset (Italy) and Mnet (South Africa).
- DIC also signs a range of deals for titles from its animated and live-action TV series and movie library including with: French DTT Channel Gulli; De Agnostini (Italy); Pop Girl (UK); CYBC (Cyprus); VRT (Dutch-speaking Belgium); TSR (Switzerland); LNK (Lithuania); and Kinotrav (Russia)
TV Loonland’s short-form animated series The Owl (52×1) is acquired by terrestrial broadcasters Mediaset (Italy) and RTVE (Spain). Also in Spain, Tribanda Pictures inks a home video rights deal for the series.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
CBBC has commissioned September Films, a unit of DCD Media, to produce the new kid 8-12 targeted science game series, Richard Hammond’s Lab Rats (26×30) for air on BBC1’s CBBC block and CBBC Channel. Set in top secret underground laboratory the series will be hosted by Hammond, best known as the host of Top Gear and previously of Brainiac, with each episode featuring two teams of three kids competing in various experiments and messy challenges over three rounds. Richard Hammond’s Lab Rats is being produced in association with Hammond’s company, Hamster’s Wheel Productions. The series will be distributed by NBDtv/DCD Media.

MARKETING/LICENSING
TV Loonland a plush toy licensing deal for The Owl with toy company Vivid Animation.
Raggs LLC, creators of the preschool series Raggs, enters into a multi-year licensing partnership with Zizzle. Under the deal, Zizzle will develop and distribute a range of Raggs themed products including musical toys, electronic games, feature plush and role-play activity sets for the US and Canada. The first products are slated to launch in fall 2009. Raggs is co-production between Raggs LLC and Southern Star International.
Horrid Henry and all his horridness are headed to the stage. Novel Entertainment is teaming with Watershed Productions, an indie theater production company, to bring the live show adaptation, Horrid Henry Live and Horrid!, to stages across the UK. The show kicks off at Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre on August 28. Based on the Horrid Henry books (Orion Children’s Books) by the Francesca Simon and the CITV animated series produced by Novel Entertainment, the original stage show will be written by John Godber, directed by Hannah Chissick and designed by Pip Leckenby. CITV recently ordered a second season of the Horrid Henry animated series.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Kevin Brockman is upped to EVP/Global Communications, Disney-ABC Television Group. Brockman oversees all corporate, news and entertainment communication efforts for the company worldwide. Brockman, who most recently served as SVP/Communications, adds the Disney-ABC International Television and Hyperion publishing to his oversight. Brockman joined the company in 1997. He reports to Anne Sweeney, Co-Chair/Disney Media Networks and President/Disney-ABC Television Group and Zenia Mucha, EVP/Corporate Communications, Disney.
Wildbrain appoints Erin Webb Dippold to Director/Licensing. In this newly created position, Dippold will be in expanding the licensing program for the company’s series Yo Gabba Gabba! She will also be involved growing Wildbrain’s consumer products business for new properties. Dippold will be based in NY and report CMO, Michael Polis. Most recently she served as Director/Licensing, Ripe Ideas, and prior to that she was Director/Marketing and Licensing, 4Kids Entertainment.
In addition to founding its new studio, Chapman Entertainment upps two members of its production team with Emily Whinnett becoming Director/Production and Nadia Harti taking the title Head/Production.
Scholastic’s Trade publishing group announces several appointments:
- Annette Hughes is named Director/National Account Sales. Previously, she was Director/Sales, HarperCollins Children’s Books.
- Kimberly Bayley joins Scholastic Trade as Cross Channel Associate Manager. She had been Assistant Editor, Scholastic’s SeeSaw Book club.
- Michael Sherman is upped to the new role of Creative Director, Klutz. Sherman has toiled for Klutz for 12 years, most recently as an Editor for Klutz, will report to Ellie Berger.
