Good morning. It’s Friday, June 3, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Cartoon Network‘s Ben 10 franchise heads into the game show arena, as Turner Broadcasting commissions UK-based production company Twenty Twenty to produce the new game series Ben 10: Ultimate Challenge (120×22) for 12 territories. Featuring content based on the three Cartoon Network produced animated series (Ben 10, Ben 10: Alien Force and Ben 10: Ultimate Alien), the new game show will challenge kids in Ben 10 general knowledge rounds, as well as physical and mental agility tests and an assault course. The studio-based series will be produced in London with a different host for each of the dozen territories (UK, Spain, France, Italy, Holland, the Nordic Region, Hungary, Poland, Germany, Russia, Turkey and the Middle East), with one kid from each of the 36 contestants in every region named the ultimate Ben 10 Superfan. Twenty Twenty previously produced series including The Big Performance, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Evacuation.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Paramount is developing an animated feature film based on Penny Arcade‘s (www.penny-arcade.com) online webcomic strip The New Kid, per THR. Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) is set to write the script for the movie, which will be produced by Mary Parent and Cale Boyter under their Paramount-based Disruption Entertainment. Created by Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins, The New Kid, which launched in October 2010, revolves around a human kid named Sol who moves with his Dad to outer space where he ends up attending an all alien school.
The international KidsCo channel enters into an exclusive distribution deal with Beagle Consulting for Spain. Under the deal Beagle Consulting will market the kid-targeted channel’s content, including Paddington, Beach Crew, Turbo Dogs, Corduroy, and other shows for linear and cable distribution, IPTV, DTH and pay-DTT over the next two years. KidsCo recently expanded in Spain with deal with Spanish platforms, Imagenio, R and Starmax, and is looking to expand its reach further. Targeted to kids/families, KidsCo is a joint venture between NBC Universal, Corus Entertainment and Cookie Jar Entertainment.
SES Astra, a European direct-to-home (DTH) satellite system, inks a deal with MTV Networks, HD+ and SES to make Nickelodeon HD and Comedy Central HD available via HD+ in Germany as of this week. HD+ now offers ten free TV HD channels, which are transmitted in encrypted form. For HD+, no fixed contract or subscription obligations apply. Following a one-year free trial period, customers pay a fixed technical service fee of US$72/year. SES Astra (www.ses-astra.com ) is an SES company.
BBC Magazines enters into an exclusive deal with Spellbound Entertainment to develop and produce a new preschool magazine app for The Koala Brothers. The app, BBC Magazines’ first preschool magazine app, will be developed by the digital team behind its Focus magazine and Good Food magazine apps. The app will launch initially for the iPad, iTouch and Mac, and then expand to Android devices via Google later next year. Spellbound’s The Koala Brother animated series was an original commission for the BBC’s CBBC (UK), which holds the exclusive license in the UK, and now airs on CBeebies. The series will join the Disney Junior line-up in the US in 2012.
Zinkia Entertainment completes a publishing deal for Pocoyo in Italy with De Agostini. Under the deal, De Agostini will publish a range of Pocoyo books beginning with sticker books, flap books, first reading and activity books, which are set to release this September 2011. This August Italian master toy distributor Giocchi Preziosi will rollout the first Pocoyo toys in Italy, including beanies, feature plush, Pocoyo SwiggleTraks, activity blocks and a Pocoyo Bump ‘N Go car. Created by Zinkia Entertainment, Pocoyo (104×7) can be seen in Italy on RAI 2 and kid-targeted channel RAI Yoyo. Zinkia also handles worldwide distribution for the property.
American Greetings Properties (AGP) completes further licensing deals for its Strawberry Shortcake property in Europe and Latin America.
- AGP and CPLG, the licensing arm of Cookie Jar Entertainment, ink new license deals for Strawberry Shortcake with publishers for Eastern and Western Europe for a range of products. In Western Europe, new publishing deals for the property include an deal with Spain-based publisher Editorial Bruno for a series of story, coloring, activity and baby books and Panini Verlags for both a storybook and a magazine line in Germany. Under a new licensing pact with Edicoes ASA in Portugal will see publication of Strawberry Shortcake activity, novelty and storybooks, with Redan Publishing set to feature Strawberry Shortcake on the cover of Sparkle World Annual magazine in the UK and Ireland. Finally, AGP and CPLG have set up a publishing program for the property in France with licensees including Hachette Livres, M6, Turbulences Presse and Albin Michel. Deals for Eastern Europe include a license deal with publishing house Hachette Polska for a line of storybooks in Poland, and a similarly with Mirax Blue Black group for Hungary. Additionally, a magazine deal with Tarna Enterprises has also been secured.
- Across Latin America, AGP and licensing agent Exim Licensing Group, on behalf of CPLG, completes both renewals and new deals for the region. Renewing its direct-to-retail partnership is Ripley for Chile. Eight new license deals for Brazil includes: Disney Channel which will broadcast the CGI animated series Berry Bitty Adventures; a retail deal with 280 Pernambucanas for its stores; Nestle (chocolate Easter eggs); Panini Brasil (stickers and sticker albums); Jolitex (bedding); Colibri (infant soft goods); Regina Industria (party goods); and Malwee Malhas (apparel). In addition, this July DT Entertainment will launch as live Strawberry Shortcake traveling show, which debuts in Argentina and will the make its way across Latin America, Central America and the Caribbean.
Big Idea Entertainment enters into new deals to expand the licensing program for its VeggieTales brand. New licensing partners, which will introduce new product this summer, include: Box Creations (floor and tabletop cardboard play sets); Primary Leisure Global (GigglePOD interactive kid video booths); Brewster Home Fashions (removable wall art); Golden Chair (kid’s furniture); DayWind (Karaoke CDs); Strottman International (kid’s meal promotions with Chick-fil-A for August 2011); Zoobies (plush pillow character and blanket combos); Tabbies (index tabs, stickers, temporary tattoos and wall clings); and Victory Designs (kid’s guitars).
4sight licensing solutions, part of 4Kids Entertainment Int., will now represent Chicaloca, a girl-targeted aspirational fashion property from South Korean licensor Project109, across all of Europe and has completed new license deals for the property.
- SLG will introduce en exclusive line of girl 8-14 targeted toiletries and cosmetics (lip gloss collection, bath & body sets, travel toiletry wallets) in October 2011. Simultaneously, Peers Hardy will debut a gift line (lockable diaries, notebooks, necklace sets) designed to complement the SLG lines.
- 4sight also inks a deal with BLGS Hometextile for a line of Chicaloca-themed beach products (42 different designs of beach towels, 10 flip flop designs), which will launch in 2012 across Spain and Italy.
- Saicon signs on to develop a new Chicaloca free to play Facebook game aimed at girls. The game lets players select a virtual fashion model, buy Chicaloca clothes and accessories using virtual money and take part in fashion shows where they compete for prizes. There will also be a new game for the iPhone.
As Content Television renews its commitment to kid/tween/teen programming activity as Matt Cooperstein comes on board to work with international producers and broadcasters to acquire and develop programming to grow Content’s kid/tween/teen content. He will be based in the US and report to Greg Phillips, President, Content TV and Digital, while working in tandem with Content’s sales teams in LA and London. A 20-year veteran, Cooperstein spent the last year leading India’s Toonz Entertainment USA office. He previously toiled for studios and companies including ITC Entertainment Group, Polygram Television, Universal Worldwide Television, IndieArts Entertainment and Liberation
Alloy Entertainment (AE) appoints Sarah DuBois Miller as Director/Licensing. Miller will lead its licensing efforts for AE properties, including Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars, as well as outside clients, including those she brings with her to AE such as WEtv/Wedding Central and Jumpstart. Miller joins AE following the recent addition of Bill Jemas to Alloy’s board of directors, whom Miller previously worked with at the licensing company 360ep.
