Good Morning. It’s Friday, June 2, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Fox orders up another 22 episodes season of American Dad, taking the 20th Century Fox show thru the 2007-08 season. From creators Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman, the show debuted on Fox in 2005 airing on Sunday nights following Family Guy. This past season American Dad averaged a 3.6/8 A18-49 on Sunday nights. In the fall, American Dad will move up to the Sunday 830p time period following The Simpsons.
Based on Nielsen’s fast cume data, approximately 19 million viewers tuned in May 31 to the 3-hour NBC News’ Today farewell show for co-anchor Katie Couric. Per the Nielsen fast program ratings, Katie’s good-bye party averaged 8.4 million viewers, ranking it as the fourth highest Today audience for a single telecast since the start of the People Meters in 1987. Today II had 7.6 million viewers and is now the most watched single telecast ever for this program.
According to Variety, ABC has pulled back from its summer reality series Buy It Now (Madison Prods) where families put their most precious items up for sale on eBay. The reason ABC pulled back? eBay decided it didn’t want to play, and without that component, the show falls flat. The show was to air on Monday and Tuesdays nights at 9p starting July 31st. What will drop into those time periods has not been announced.
Here are a handful of ABC summer programming premiere dates for you:
How to Get a Guy – June 12 at 10p
Master of Champions – June 22 at 8p
The One: The Making of a Music Star – July 18 at 9p with results the following evening at 8p
One Ocean View – July 31 at 10p
Discovery Channel’s auto-engineering series, Monster Garage will mark its final world premiere with a two-hour special on June 12 at 8p. Host Jesse James along with his crews of mechanics, welders, designers and more will make-over a station wagon into an Old School Monster. Furthermore, to celebrate 85 episodes of the series, builders from the last four years and their creations will return for the concluding episode.
From dream machine designers to fashion designers . . . . Bravo will debut season three of the Emmy-nominated reality series Project Runway on July 12 at 10p. Supermodel Heidi Klum once again leads a panel of fashion industry leaders who will judge fifteen budding designers as they compete to win with their innovative styles. The finale of season two that aired in March was seen by 3.4 million making it the most viewed program in Bravo’s history. Project Runway is co-produced by The Weinstein Company and Miramax Television.
Sleuth, the new murder, crime and mystery network from NBC Universal Cable Entertainment, has launched on DirecTV and is available to more than 15 million subscribers. Each day in June, Sleuth has programming stunts such as Murder Mondays and Action Wednesdays to Sleuth Summer Vacation weekends. The network kicks off with the movie Fear tonight followed by The Truth About Charlie on June 3.
If you’re a fan of BBC World News over say one of our domestic brands, then you may be interested to know that come July BBC World News will also offer a morning show, designed to compete with GMA, Today and CBS Morning, as well as the 24/7 cable news networks’ morning shows. The new program will hail in July, will have a decided worldly view with an American audience bent, and can be seen on BBC America, with BBC World News anchor George Alagiah set to host, per Variety.
ABC Family, Lionsgate and series creators Piller/Segan will produce webisodes for the series Wildfire, and available on the networks website starting this fall. The webisodes will be used to set up the story – a prequel to the series. Wildfire will begin production on its third season this July.
The season finale of Sci Fi‘s reality show Ghost Hunters on Wednesday night drew in 1.9 million total viewers, 1.2 million within the A18-49 bracket, making this the network’s highest rated program in that key demo since the finale of Battlestar Galactica last March. The finale took place at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado, where Stephen King stayed while writing The Shining. Ghost Hunters will return for a new season in October with 13 new episodes.
Rachel Ray will now be seen in Greece along with other Scripps Networks lifestyle programming following an agreement with SmartTV. The two-year contract licenses 500 total hours of programming from HGTV, Fine Living TV Network and Food Network. Scripps Networks International has recently signed first-time deals for their programming to be seen in China, Vietnam and Mexico. Scripps Networks programming is now available on every continent, in more than 160 countries and seen by more than 345 million households.
The restaurant chain, Jack in the Box, has added national cable to its second and third quarter media schedules, according to their media services agency, Horizon Media. Their strategy has changed to target men 18-34 and the cable networks ESPN, TNT, Comedy Central, Spike TV, FX and Adult Swim will be used to reach this elusive market segment.
CBS has signed a development deal with Jenna Elfman for a new comedy project. Elfman has been around CBS for a while now – doing a few eps of Two & a Half Men a couple of years ago, and then last season Courting Alex ran briefly. No information yet on the new project.
Chuck Bolkcom has resigned his position as Group Publisher of Broadcasting & Cable and Multichannel News and his last day is today, and has accepted the position of Director at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in their Entertainment and Media business.
