Cynopsis: Kids!

06/27/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, June 27, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

DQ Entertainment Plc. enters into a $100 million multi-year co-production agreement with MoonScoop Group.  Under the deal DQ and MoonScoop plan to co-produce five TV series and two feature films for global release, with either a TV series or movie bowing each year of the agreement.  At least one of the co-productions could be based on Indian mythology.  The two already work together on the animated TV series Casper’s Scare School, a co-production with Classic Media and is set to bow in 2009, and Fantastic Four.  Furthermore, DQ and Moonscoop will also direct efforts towards new media development, in keeping with MoonScoop’s kid-centric VOD and broadband efforts Kabillion (US) and Taffy Kids (Europe).

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Tiger Aspect Production heads into production in Africa on the new animated preschool series Tinga Tinga Tales (52×11) with kid broadcasters CBeebies (UK) and Playhouse Disney (US), while Entertainment Rights acquires the distribution rights and will manage the brand worldwide across all media.  Scheduled to begin delivering in fall 2009 and on into 2010, Tinga Tinga Tales features traditional storytelling of African folktales as told by African animal characters.  Tiger Aspect in association with Nairobi’s Homeboyz has set up an animation studio in Kenya and is hiring local designers, writers, musicians and animators to create the look of the series, which is based on the Tinga Tinga art of Tanzania.  To help achieve that richness the images will be hand painted by local African artists and then computer animated.  Additionally, Tiger Aspect plans to use half of its profits from the series to support educational efforts for kids in East Africa.

Apartment 11 Productions commences production on its new tween-targeted reality series, In the Real World (13×60).  Scheduled to debut on YTV (Canada) in early 2009, In the Real World will see 18 contestants, all Tweens 12-14, from across North America take part in a series of real-life challenges.  What kinds of challenges you ask?  Well, they include taking part in an air-to-air combat in a fighter plane in California, catching an alligator in Florida, rappelling down a mountain in British Columbia and riding along with a NASCAR driver.  Hosted by comic Sabrina Jalees, In the Real World is produced by Apartment 11 Productions in association with YTV.  YTV appears to be in reality series mode.  You may recall the network along with 9 Story Entertainment and Les Stroud began casting for tweens/teens to take part in its reality series Survivorman Kids (13 episodes), which will be filmed in Ontario this summer.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Get out your hairbrushes … and prepare to sing along in front of your TVs when Disney Channel televises Camp Rock Rock-Along this Saturday, June 28 at 8p.  Hosted by Jonas Brothers (shriek, scream, swoon), Demi Lovato, Alyson Stoner and other stars of Camp Rock, Disney Channel’s newest original TV movie, Camp Rock Rock-Along will feature the movie with on-screen lyrics to the songs so viewers can sing along at home.  Ah, and for those looking for a little more prep time or prefer just having the goods in hand, lyric sheets are available at www.disneychannel.com/camprock . Leading up to Camp Rock Rock-Along the network will feature a 6-hour marathon (2-8p) featuring Phineas and Ferb, Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly Place.

Turner Broadcasting has picked up the new HD CGI animated Garfield (52×11) TV series from France’s Dargaud Media, for air on Cartoon Network across Europe, Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific and Latin America in 2009.  The new series launch coincides with Garfield’s 30th anniversary.

Thinkbox Inc. releases Showy Show! Preschool Show, the first in its new series of live-action preschool-targeted videos.  Showy Show aims to help kids develop early literacy skills through music, every day preschool situations (going to bed, sleepovers etc) and repetition, by inviting kid viewers to participate in various activities.  Previously, Thinkbox created Kindle Park learning program and PlayBox Theme Time, an early learning program.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Abandon Interactive Entertainment and Alienware, a manufacturer of entertainment and PC gaming systems, are working together to promote the upcoming cross-platform massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) game Freaky Creatures as part of the Dell-Intel 2008 Extreme Gaming Tour.  Slated to open for beta testing to the public on July 15, Freaky Creatures allows players to build customizable creatures and battle them against friends.  Players begin with collectable action figures and a flash drive that brings the creatures to life online.  The initial creatures come with 50 different parts, 20 powers and four objects that can be placed in to the creature’s lair.  Players can battle other creatures via PC to PC or PC to mobile.

The Extreme Gaming Tour kicks off today at Wizard World in Chicago with a lineup of top PC titles including: World of Warcraft, Lost Planet, Space Siege, Backup: Painkiller, World in Conflict, Assassin’s Creed, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Madden 3D. The tour will make its way to video game and entertainment industry events and conferences throughout the summer, including Summerfest, Taste of Buffalo, Artscape, Allstate 400 NASCAR race, Gen Con Indy and the Penny Arcade Expo.

Sesame Workshop and the USO (United Service Organizations) kicks off The Sesame Street Experience for Military Families, a free touring show that will visit 43 military installations across the country, on July 8.  The tour, produced by VEE Corporation, is part of Sesame Workshop’s two-year-old Talk, Listen, Connect initiative, an outreach program that supports military families with young kids where one or both parents has/will be deployed or when one returns.  Details about the tour can be found at www.sesamestreet.org/tlc.

STONE SOUP

Millennial girls (defined as Girls 13-24), understand that they have more opportunities than prior generations of women, but apparently comes with the stress of about having to “do it all,”” according to The N‘s newly released study, The Story of Girl.  Among the key findings of the study, which was conducted winter 2007-April 2008:

  • Overall Girls 13-24 are a happy and optimistic group, and yet 43% describe themselves as “stressed out,” versus just 19% of their male counterparts. The group says its main stress comes from school (72%), the future (72%), money (71%), and their appearance (61%).
  • 59% of girls in the survey say they are smarter than guys their age, and 43% believe they will earn more money than their spouse.
  • 34% of Girls 13-24 say women have achieved equality with men, 85% think a double standard exists, with 84% believing women are still discriminated against in the workplace.
  • The report finds this demo has no clear individual role models outside their individual lives, with 34% of girls saying they look up to themselves or have no role model at all.  Mom is a role model to 25% of girls, while just 6% of girls report having a athlete or celebrity of one sort or another as a role model.
