Good morning, it’s Friday, June 25, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
The 600,000 people who weren’t lucky enough to pre-order Apple‘s iPhone 4s faced the biggest lines yet for the smartphone as Apple stores across the country sold out of their first batches on Thursday morning. (Of course, the reserved lines moved much quicker, and weren’t forced to turn away all those disappointed fanboys and fangirls.) Customers who tried to buy phones at Radio Shack and Best Buy faced even greater shortages, as these retailers received much smaller allotments. The consensus is that Apple will easily sell over 1 million iPhone 4s during the first day, which would make it the best selling smartphone ever out of the gate and the most successful new product launch in Apple’s history.
Showtime has launched another three-screen interactive viewer experience around its new unscripted series, The Real L Word, premiering Sunday nights at 10 pm. Before and during each episode, viewers will be able to chat, view videos and participate in polls via Twitter, Facebook, Ustream and online at Sho.com’s Live Lounge. There’s also a free iPhone app that allows you to check into locations featured on the show via foursquare. Natalie Garcia, an online only cast member, will serve as the host of the site’s live chats.
Dick Clark Productions has created an online licensing portal offering access to over 30 years of its shows and footage from American Bandstand to So You Think You Can Dance?
White label social networking app developer KickApps introduced a new development suite enabling marketers to create branded Facebook apps, widgets and video players. The template features a drag-and-drop interface with easy instructions on publishing embeddable video, useful for creating new Facebook fan pages or tabs on existing pages.
Babelgum has acquired Aaron Yonda and Matt Sloan’s comedy series Chad Vader, which documents Darth’s trials and tribulations in contemporary America. (It’s Matt that does Lord Vader’s voice as well, although he sounds quite a bit like James Earl Jones.) Aaron and Matt will continue to create exclusive original episodes to air monthly on Babelgum’s Comedy channel.
The IAB released new guidelines to help standardize the information networks and exchanges provide to advertisers as part of push to help the internet ad industry police itself and stave off impeding regulation. The Networks & Exchanges Quality Assurance Guidelines, developed with the Digital Committee of the Association of American Advertising Agencies (4A’s) and the Digital Marketing Committee of the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), call for websites and advertisers to disclose exactly how they track and utilize personal information and web histories, utilizing standard definitions, audience segments, content ratings and other measures.
Movie site Flixster is partnering with TV community site BuddyTV and movie review site Rotten Tomatoes to create a unified ad platform for advertisers. The properties will be represented in the U.S. by Flixster sales teams in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Seattle.
Video ad network ScanScout is now allowing advertisers to pick and choose which sites their ads will run on – a first for a broadly distributed video network, reports Mediaweek.
The White House rolled out an expansive new strategy to combat online piracy and counterfeit goods this week revolving around coordinating the efforts of multiple agencies and spearheaded by Victoria Espinel, the administration’s new piracy czar. The MPAA hailed the effort.
The U.S. Senate Homeland Security Committee members Joseph Lieberman, (I-CN.) Susan Collins, (R-ME,) and Sen. Thomas Carper, (D-Del.) defended controversial provisions in their Cybersecurity bill. One of dozens of similar bills in circulation, the Senators noted that the bill actually narrows existing broad Presidential authority to take over telecom networks in the event of an emergency. Meanwhile, the White House is expected to unveil its security and privacy strategy today, addressing corporate use of personal information, liability standards and regulatory approaches to digital privacy.
Twitter reached a settlement with the FTC over allegations that it failed to safeguard users’ personal information and worse yet, led them to believe their data was safe. The charges stem from a couple of incidents last year when hackers achieved access to users’ names, passwords and tweets. Under terms of the settlement, the company must set up a comprehensive information security program to be audited by a third party and is “barred for 20 years from misleading consumers about the extent to which it maintains and protects the security, privacy, and confidentiality of nonpublic consumer information.”
YouTube achieved record viewership in May with 14.6 billion total videos, surpassing an average of 100 videos per user for the first time, according to ComScore. More than 4 out of every 10 videos viewed online are YouTube videos. Vevo and Facebook views also climbed again in May, with Vevo surpassing Viacom to become the 4th largest site in the U.S. in terms of video views and Facebook cracking the top 10 for the first time.

Motorola and Verizon Wireless unveiled the Droid X on Wednesday, scheduled to ship on July 15 for $200 with a 2-year agreement. It’s the most sophisticated smartphone yet built for Google’s open Android platform, running on a 1 Ghz T1 OMAP processor. It sports a 4.3-inch touchscreen, an 8-megapixel camera, 16:9 image capture and HDMI output (you can view movies you shoot on a projector). Another cool feature is its ability to create a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to 5 other devices (a feature that costs an extra $20/month.) The iPhone 4 is stealing all the press but Android is a worthy competitor; Google says that 160,000 Android phones are now activated each day, up from earlier estimates of 100,000/day.
President Obama’s digitally savvy campaign team Organizing for America launched a new iPhone and iPad app that hopes to leverage support for Congressional Democrats heading into the fall elections.
Tech-themed online video producer Revision3 (“Diggnation,” “Penn Point”) has also launched its own free iPhone app offering access to its full stable of shows.
Jonathan Accarrino, former social media maven for The NBC Agency, has joined interactive agency Definition 6. He will be based in the company’s New York City office and will be responsible for developing social media programs for Definition 6 clients.
PBS show History Detectives, which traces the history, mythologies and family legends behind found objects, has long relied on its website, Facebook page and Twitter feed to find new objects to feature on the show. (Check it out if you’ve never seen it – it’s entertaining to see how passionate folks get about their personal treasures.) This year, the 8th season space-themed premiere makes a direct interactive pitch to viewers to help solve the mystery of whether or not a miniature piece of collaborative art was snuck aboard the Apollo 12 space mission, possibly created by Andy Warhol and others. During the investigation, a cryptic message on a telegram turns up penned by “John F,” mentioning something being slipped under the door and that “all systems are go.” Who is John F and was the plot real? The show’s producers are asking the public to help solve the mystery here and over 100 viewers have already done so. The idea may not be that far fetched – one astronaut interviewed in the episode admits he and his comrades secretly buried personal items on the surface of the moon.
