CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Good morning. It’s Friday, June 24, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. Rick Haskins, EVP/GM of Lifetime, is leaving the cable network at the end of next month. Rick has been interim Pres/Entertainment for almost a year, following the departure of Barbara Fisher. Then Carole Black left the network, and in comes new Pres/CEO Betty Cohen who according to various reports offered the President post to Rick. However, unable to come to terms, he has opted to leave. Also looking for the exit in the coming months is Marsey Carsey who is expected to announce her retirement from Carsey-Werner, the production company such notables as The Cosby Show, Roseanne and the current Fox series That 70’s Show. According to Variety, with Carsey’s retirement the company will effectively shut down development and production of any new projects for television, but will likely continue with its film production. Carsey and partner Tom Werner will also continue to maintain the C-W library and distribution efforts. As for Werner, he may be looking to open his own shop. And if that’s not enough – here’s one more. Bob Horowitz, long time topper of TWI-IMG, will be leaving his post to set up his own reality production house called Juma Entertainment, per Variety. The new shop already has several projects in the works including an all new Battle of the Network Stars for Bravo, and a handful of scripted projects. * NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *
Casting for WB‘s new primetime drama Related (Warner Bros. TV) has been completed. Replacing Laura San Giacomo in the role of one of four sisters will be Kiele Sanchez. The other three sisters are the same as in the pilot – Lizzy Caplan, Laura Breckenridge and Jennifer Esposito. Related is scheduled to air on Wednesdays at 9pm this fall on the WB. Sanchez casting in Related leaves a hole in the NBC comedy series, Four Kings (Warner Bros. TV/KoMut Ent) – a midseason show. In the pilot, Sanchez had played the role of girlfriend to one of the center stage four friends. That role will now be a guest starring role. On Fox‘s new fall series Head Cases (20th) has cast Richard Kind who will play an ex-attorney turned paralegal. Head Cases is scheduled to air on Wednesdays at 9p this fall, and stars Chris O’Donnell as an attorney with a derailed superstar past, teamed up with a low-rent lawyer played by Adam Goldberg whose clients are the scummiest of the scummy. 20th has signed exec prod Matt Olmstead to a 2/7 deal, where he will initially be the showrunner for Fox’s new primetime series Prison Break. His deal also calls for him to develop new series for the studio. * MORE GOOD STUFF *
As 60 Minutes Wednesdays prepares for the great newsroom in the sky, CBS will be edging it out slowly, first by moving it to Fridays at 8pm beginning July 8. With that move, the show will also change back to its original title, 60 Minutes II. Big Brother debuts on July 6 at 8p. CNN is retooling one show and cancelling another. Leaving the schedule after 16 years is The Capital Gang (LTC on June 25), currently airing on Saturday nights at 7p. That show will give way to a primetime airing of On the Story as of July 9, which will also keep its Sunday morning 10a time period, airing there as a repeat. IN addition, On the Story will get a makeover. The rotating panel discussion group is out; Christiane Amanpour is in a permanent host. Also in will be a studio audience, questions from viewers, and conversations with a variety of CNN correspondents on world and domestic issues. The show will be taped at George Washington University in D.C. Beginning in August, DirecTV will begin airing 30m specials of new primetime fall shows, titled Sneak Peeks. The specials are being produced and provided to DirecTV by each the six broadcast networks. This marks the first time DirecTV has provided this programming service to its 14 million sub base. The satellite service will give each network one week and during that week its 30m tape will air across several DirecTV channels, including those not currently in use. DirecTV will also provide plenty of promotion in the weeks before the Sneak Peeks begin airing. The big question – who goes first, or more importantly perhaps, who goes last? Television stations can blunt the ad-skipping damage from digital video recorders by creating spots that elicit strong emotional responses from the audience. That’s one of the findings from Frank N. Magid Associates survey the company released at the Promax conference in New York on Thursday. Focusing on new technologies. the survey made recommendations on the type of ads viewers would be less likely to skip. It also found little difference in the recall of 15- or 30-second spots among the audience but that how often they ran and whether their message was “relevant” to viewers mattered most. The full presentation can be downloaded at www2. promax .tv/magid_survey/home.asp after July 1. Sports specialty retailer The Finish Line, Inc. launches a new TV ad campaign today, in conjunction with Nike and ad agency Wieden+Kennedy. The 3×15-second spots called Motivation feature the Nike’s new running shoe the Shox Cog. For the most part the ads will air on cable TV networks including ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN News, MTV, MTV 2, Comedy Central, Spike, BET, G4, and Adult Swim on Cartoon Network, airing in a bookend format. Ads will also run on several websites including, Yahoo! Music, ESPN Motion, Gamespot, MTV and Maxim. Procter & Gamble has moved its Eukanuba business from its current agency Saatchi & Saatchi, over to independent agency Wieden+Kennedy, per a Wall Street Journal report. Last year, P&G’s Eukanuba brand spent a reported $10.2 million for media time and ad space. Meanwhile, Saatchi & Saatchi will continue to work on other P&G brands including Iams, Head & Shoulders and Folgers coffee. Jennifer Dargan has been named Director/Public Relations for Turner Classic Movies. Spike TV President Doug Herzog has named Sharon Levy, SVP/Alternative Programming. In this newly created position, Sharon will develop and oversee primetime alternative reality TV series for the network. She will be based in Los Angeles and report to Mr. Herzog. Spike TV also announced Bill McGoldrick has joined as VP/Original Scripted Series. The announcement was made by Doug Herzog/President Spike TV, to whom Bill will report. Bill will oversee Spike TV’s original programming department and will be responsible for the creation, development and production of original series from inception through air. He will be based in Los Angeles. Patricia S. Harrison, has been named President and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). She is the former Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs since 2001. Casting Note: Red Dog Entertainment is casting a male host for a new reality show on a major cable network. This is not your everyday, perfect hair, polished type of host. They are looking for a guy who has a work history in law enforcement – something like a former FBI or CIA man, private investigator, Secret Service, that sort of thing. No law enforcement background – no hosting job – and no actors playing the role of a former law enforcement guy. They’re looking for the real deal, who also happens to have some charisma. If that’s you, email them your name, bio, info and photo at * RATINGS *
Wednesday- A18-49 Analysis: On the strength of the Samba and the Viennese Waltz, ABC led on Wednesday night with an overall 2.8/9 A18-49 rating, according to final numbers from Nielsen Media Research.
