Good Morning, it’s Friday, June 22, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The HD race is in full swing, following DirecTV’s announcement last January at CES that it will offer 100 HD channels by year-end. Cox Communications says it will have the capacity to offer 50 HD channels across its entire footprint by the end of 2007, thanks to system upgrades, statistical multiplexing and switched video. Cablevision announced it will add sister company Voom‘s 15 HD networks from June 26, saying it will be able to handle 500 HD channels by year end. Finally AT&T says it is offering more than 30 national HD channels (in additional to local channels) for its Homezone service through a bundling agreement with DISH Network.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
The EU has given permission to NBC Universal and News Corp. to launch its online video joint venture, scheduled to go online stateside in September. The two companies have earmarked $100 million for the venture so far.
 
GE and Financial Times publisher Pearson have bowed out of the bidding for Dow Jones. $5 billion is a lot of moola. 
 
Yahoo acquired college sports site Rivals.com, a subscription-based online sports network that ranks second behind ESPN.com in users with 15 million monthly uniques, according to comScore Media Metrix. Rivals charges $99.95/year or $9.95/month for its premium content, which includes detailed recruiting reports and videos of pro prospects. The company says it has approximately 185,000 paying subs.
 
Yahoo is releasing a new version of its mobile Yahoo Go 2.0 application in the U.S. today, with localized beta versions going to 13 different countries. It gives users access to email, maps and search and will add video capabilities in the near future. Yahoo says 3 million users in the U.S. have requested to download the platform since its initial launch in January. Yahoo struck deals to have it be pre-loaded on new phones from Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, LG, and HTC later this year.
 
Local station group and USA Today publisher Gannett Co. is leading a $10 million investment in mobile search, publishing and advertising firm 4info. The company uses SMS/text messaging technology to create interactive applications, news alerts, weather updates and stock quotes.
 
Ziff Davis Media Inc. is selling the assets of its Enterprise Group to an affiliate of Insight Venture Partners for $150 million in cash. The technology/videogame portfolio includes online properties eweek.com, webbuyersguide.com, cioinsight.com, baselinemag.com, microsoft-watch.com, channelinsider.com and eWEEK, CIO and Baseline magazines.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

Prom Queen, which finished its 80-webisode run this week, has already announced a spinoff. Prom Queen: Summer Heat will follow the same characters as they take off for Mexico immediately following prom night. The webisodes will expand from 90 seconds to 120 seconds, running for three weeks from August. The soap opera/murder mystery, produced by Michael Eisner’s Vuguru, was an unqualified hit, drawing some 200,000 hits a day and 15 million total downloads.
 
More video search news. Cast TV signed a two-year licensing agreement with TV Guide to power its online video search guide. TVGuide launched a beta version of the search tool this spring and will improve its functionality to search more independent producers and video aggregators.
 
Webcam broadcasting provider blogTV launched an embeddable player that enables live webcasters to host live shows on their sites that can be easily stored and passed along. The feature should help it keep up with competitor Stickam (see website of the day).
 
Widget marketplace site Widgetbox and Sugar Publishing launched a collection of interactive applications that pull the latest gossip from sites such as Perez Hilton and PopSugar. The site also launched a contest this week challenging developers to come up with the coolest new widget for $1,000 cash. The winner will be announced at the Freewebs WidgetCon conference July 11.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~
 

Time Warner‘s TMZ.com is being sued for posting a link to the entire manuscript of O.J. Simpson’s “hypothetical” murder tell all “If I Did It” on Wednesday. It wasn’t up for long; the site received a takedown notice from a trustee overseeing Simpson’s bankruptcy case the same day. But given TMZ’s popularity, the pdf is now out wide in cyberspace. The trustee, who filed an emergency motion in a U.S. bankruptcy court in Miami, wants to know how the site got a hold of the book.
 
Web broadcasters plan to turn off their internet radio feeds next Tuesday to protest higher royalty rates sites will be forced to pay from July 15, starting at 8 cents per song per listener. Joining in the protest are KCRW, Santa Monica’s NPR station, Live 365, Pandora, Yahoo Music and AccuRadio.
 
Real Networks
CEO Rob Glaser answered some questions on his blog posted by paidcontent.org’s Rafat Ali surrounding the release of the upcoming RealPlayer11. The new player will allow users to download videos from other sites including YouTube, upload them to an iPod, burn them to a DVD or share links with others directly from the player. Glaser said the RP11 was all about giving users control over a broad array of internet video, reiterating that it will support multiple formats–Real, Windows Media, QuickTime and Flash. He also defended the player’s legality, claiming its “appropriate” uses include downloading public domain content.
 
Yet web technology company IndustryNext is already preparing an end-around to help content owners protect against the new RealPlayer. The company announced a new version of its enScramble protection service that encrypts Flash video to prevent it from being captured and recorded. The system supports several video formats including AVI, WMN, MOV and MPEG.
 
Non profit Intelligent Solutions Group (ISG) officially launched to help owners and producers of content securely bring their video and audio to the web. In partnership with Open Media Network (OMN), ISG will help content owners identify rights issues, take copyright protection measures and define revenue-generating strategies.


~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Toyota’s youthful Scion division expanded its virtual reality presence signing a partnership with Gaia Online, a Second Life alternative with an anime aesthetic targeting teens. Gaia users can trick out their Scions with all kinds of after-market accessories then compete in races, shows, auctions, etc.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Here’s a new one. PricewaterhouseCoopers‘ annual Global Media Outlook claims user generated videos and DVR capabilities will actually help grow traditional TV ad sales by an average of 4.5% per year to $46.3 billion by 2011. The upside comes from the fact that DVR’s users watch more TV, and networks are finally getting credit for these viewers.
 
The same PwC study projects worldwide web advertising and access fee revenue to reach $78.4 billion by 2011, with the U.S. – currently the biggest market – to grow to $35.4 billion by then. China is expected to overtake the U.S. in internet ad spending by 2009.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~
 

MTV Networks promoted SVP/Digital Media of Comedy Central and Spike Erik Flannigan to EVP/Digital Media of the entire MTVN Entertainment Group. Erik will oversee gaming properties Xfire, GameTrailers.com and the soon-to-be integrated iFilm.com and spikeTV.com. He reports to Doug Herzog, President of the Entertainment Group. Meanwhile Jon Slusser, former GEO of GameTrailers, was promoted to SVP/Spike Digital and Video Games, reporting to Mr. Flannigan.
 
BBC Worldwide hired former MobiTV Director Peter Mercier as Head of Mobile in its Digital Media Division. Peter will head the companies push into mobile content, reporting to Simon Danker, Director of Digital Media. He will be based in London.
 
iVillage named Michael Gutkowski as COO, reporting to Deborah Fine, President of iVillage Properties. He is charged with managing day-to-day operations for iVillage.com, iVillage UK, iVillage Total Health, Astrology.com, GardenWeb and gURL.com. Michael, currently SVP/Digital for Time’s Southern Progress Corp. (MyRecipies.com), starts on July 16.
 
Interpublic Emerging Media Lab appointed Raquel Krouse and VP/Director of Healthcare. She will liaise with Interpublic agencies and healthcare clients on technology issues, working from Los Angeles and reporting to Lori H. Schwartz, SVP/Director.
 
In store video producer Channel M hired Tim Eaton as Senior Account Director to open a new office in Dallas, Texas.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
 

Stickam is an online social networking site with live video capabilities. Whether you’re looking for a way to chat live with friends on the web or upload a live musical performance, the site makes it easy to “broadcast yourself,” to steal another site’s slogan. It features an embeddable video player that can be placed on your own site. Stickam launched a new home page earlier this month with new features that help prioritize the more popular offerings. The site’s staff selects the more interesting live broadcasts – the ones with the most views are listed first. Incidentally, Stickam will be broadcasting live from the Los Angeles Film Festival through Sunday, July 1.
