Good morning. It’s Friday, June 21, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Netflix has picked up Hemlock Grove, an original horror/mystery series from Executive Producer Eli Roth, for a second season. Netflix released the first season in the period between House of Cards and Arrested Development. Veteran showrunner Charles H. Eglee (The Walking Dead, Dexter, The Shield) will join the show as Executive Producer for season two, which will debut on Netflix in 2014. The series stars Famke Janssen (X-Men), Bill Skarsgard (Simon & The Oaks), and Dougray Scott (Mission Impossible II). The second season, which will go into production later this year, will consist of 10 episodes.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

FishBowl Worldwide Media will use Fullscreen’s technology solutions to build an audience for its YouTube channel for America’s Funniest Home Videos. The multi-year deal covers audience development as well as copyright protection via asset management and content ID. In addition, Fullscreen and FishBowl will look to develop original content based on America’s Funnest Home Videos clips.

In a blog post yesterday, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer announced that the company’s acquisition of Tumbler has officially closed. “As promised, Tumblr will continue to operate as a separate business, led by David Karp as CEO. Their product roadmap, their team, and tone will all remain the same as will their mission to empower creators and curators alike to do what they love best: create,” she said.

Netflix might have made some waves by offering every episode of House of Cards from the very beginning, but Amazon has no plans to do that with its own D.C.-based political series. Alpha House, which was picked up by Amazon Studios for a full, 10-episode season order, will not be available for binge-viewing from the very beginning, according to what show producer Jonathan Alter told TheWrap. Created by Garry Trudeau (Doonesbury), the political comedy stars John Goodman and follows a group of senators who live in the same house. Alter did not disclose exactly how the new episodes would be made available, just that it will follow “a different model.”

CONTENT EVERYWHERE

Viacom has struck a deal with Twitter to distribute short video clips/highlights from the media company’s network live-event programming. The deal begins with this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, during which MTV will push ad-supported highlights from the show (including trending moments, interviews, and backstage content) to Twitter in near real-time.

VEVO has launched a new desktop app for Windows 8 computers. The app offers full access to the music video platform’s library of 75,000+ music videos, original programming, and concert videos. The app also includes VEVO TV, the company’s broadcast-style 24/7 music “channel.” Features include personalized playlists as well as the ability to multitask by using the Windows 8 snap view, which moves the video to the side of the screen. The Windows 8 app can be downloaded for free via the Windows 8 app store. VEVO apps are also available for iOS and Android devices as well as connected TV platforms like Xbox Live and Roku.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is making its CBS drama Person of Interest available for digital download for the first time. Consumers can purchase any (and every) episode from the first two seasons across the normal EST outlets, including iTunes and Amazon Instant Video.

Flixster has launched an app on Panasonic’s Viera smart TVs and Blu-ray players. The app supports the UltraViolet digital locker initiative, which allows users to watch digital copies of movies they have purchased and then stored in the cloud-based service.

ADVERTISING

Millennial Media has launched nine new interactive mobile video ad units. “We’ve heard from our key brand partners that there is a desire to go beyond simply repurposing video from other channels, so we built these new products so brands can strategically optimize their video content for mobile,” said Marcus Startzel, CRO of Millennial. Some of the new ad products include: Video SYNC (which allows advertisers to wrap rich media around a mobile video player and sync different animations with specific points in a video); Video TOGGLE (for tablets; a large video is supported by three smaller videos underneath, giving users the option switch from video to video); Video TICKER (enables advertisers to insert real-time info such as sports scores, movie times, or Twitter feeds into the ad). When Apple launches iTunes Radio, the company’s free music streaming service, later this fall, it will include video ads, according to AdAge. iTunes Radio inventory will be sold via Apple’s ad network, iAd, which also delivers ads to iPhones and iPads. The service will be available across all Apple devices, including the Apple TV.

SupersonicAds, a provider of ad monetization solutions for mobile/social game and app developers, has launched Ultra for Mobile. The turnkey platform enables mobile publishers and developers to manage and sell their inventory across multiple ad sources. Features include the ability for developers to add multiple mobile video SDK; aggregate data from all ad providers, placements, and formats on to one dashboard; and fully control the ad and user experience by setting terms for things like minimum pricing, video length, and the amount of ads per user. Ultra supports apps for iOS and Android devices, Facebook, and the IAB’s VAST and VPAID standards.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Broadcast Interactive Media (BIM) has launched the BIMvid App, a mobile video app for iOS devices that allows news-reporters in the field to upload videos from their devices to their publisher. BIM says once the videos are uploaded, they can be published, syndicated, and distributed to any device. The app is available for free to all current users of BIMvid, the company’s end-to-end live streaming and on-demand video publishing solution. BIM also recently released closed-captioning support for online live streaming.

So Instagram will now have video.Here are the details on Facebook and Instagram announced yesterday at a product launch press event:

  • Users will be able to record anywhere between 3 and 15 seconds of video
  • Because it’s Instagram, users will be able to apply one of 13 custom filters
  • A “cinema” feature will stabilize videos to eliminate shaky shots
  • Right now, Instagram video can only be shot using the app (it does not yet support the ability to upload previous videos for sharing)

THE DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

Break Media has partnered with New Regency Productions (the studio behind Fight Club and The Internship) to launch a new online film program/competition called Prototype, which will give eight up-and-coming filmmakers the chance to win a feature film development deal. To enter, aspiring filmmakers need to submit a short film script, a treatment for a feature-length film, and a directing sample. Break and New Regency will then select eight finalists, each of whom will receive $20,000 to make their own “action, sci-fi, or effects-driven short film.” Along the way, creative execs from Break and New Regency will guide the projects (5-10 minutes long), which will be distributed across all Break Media platforms later this year, followed by the announcement of the winner in early 2014. The winner will get the aforementioned shot at developing a feature with New Regency.
