Cynopsis: Kids!

06/20/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, June 20, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Gannett Co., Inc., announces its investment in Cozi, a two-year old free web service aimed at helping busy families manage schedules and share information with one another.  For its investment, Gannett will receive a minority stake in Cozi and a seat on the company’s Board of Directors.  The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.  Gannett will market the Cozi brand and product throughout its media channels, including USA Today, its network of 85 daily and regional newspapers, hundreds of local websites and 23 TV stations nationwide.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Bratz Girlz Really Rock, a new animated movie musical will be released on DVD on September 2, 2008, from Lionsgate and MGA Entertainment.  A line of Bratz dolls based on the new DVD will debut this fall along with a new video game.

Shout! Factory, in association with DIC Entertainment will release Liberty’s Kids: The Complete Series DVD box set on October 14, 2008, (FYI, that is the day after Columbus day).  The collection includes all 40 episodes of the animated history TV series Liberty’s Kids, in a 6-DVD box set, which also include a host of celebrity guest voices as historical figures.

Disney Interactive Studios will release video games based on the CG animated feature film Bolt, a Disney picture, in November 2008 for Wii, Xbox 36o, PlayStation 2, Playstation 3, Nintendo DS and Windows PC.  Avalanche Software, Disney’s Interactive Studios’ family games development studio, is developing the Bolt video game.  Disney is set to release Bolt, the movie, nationwide on November 26, 2008.  The movie revolves around canine TV star that is inadvertently shipped from Hollywood to NYC, and then begins a cross-country trip home and discovers that the super powers he thought he had don’t work in the real world.

Universal Music Family will release A Holly Jolly Kids Christmas (Hip-O/UMe), an album featuring a range of original recordings of classic holiday songs, for holiday 2008.  Among the 11 songs on the CD are: A Holly Jolly Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock, Rockin Around The Christmas Tree, and Frosty The Snowman and All I Want For Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth).

MARKETING/LICENSING

MTV teams up with Sears for the launch of The American Mall, a new movie musical from the executive producers who brought us High School Musical.  The American Mall premieres Monday, August 11 at 9p on MTV, with the DVD and soundtrack dropping the next day, August 12. The American Mall follows a group of young adults who work in a mall over the summer. Co-branded TV commercials will air during the premiere of the movie.  Over the course of the summer Sears will distribute VIP Access Cards, which will feature special offers for members, as well as offer product giveaways via radio promotions and on MTV’s TRL, as well as driving to stores for back-to-school.  Sears will promote the movie both in-store, including featuring fashion looks from the movie, licensed merchandise and the movie DVD with a bonus disc featuring exclusive material, and in its circular and on online.  Bonus video clips and content from the movie will appear on both the movie’s site and the Sears seasonal microsite www.arrivelounge.com .

In other Sears news, the retailer also recently inked a deal with singer/actor LL Cool J to develop a line of LL Cool J clothing, which will roll out exclusively at Sears stores.

STONE SOUP

Mike Young Productions and China’s Global Digital Creations (GDC) are donating proceeds from the opening weekend of the 3D CGI animated feature film Little Happy Submarines (known here as Dive Olly Dive!) to go towards the rebuilding of several elementary schools damaged during the recent disastrous earthquakes in Sichuan, China.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Tween Brands, Inc. has announced the resignation of Kenneth T. Stevens, President, COO and Secretary, effective June 27, 2008.  Stevens will also step-down from his position on the company’s Board of Directors.  Tween Brands Chairman and CEO Mike Rayden said that no successor will be named as the position of president and chief operating officer is being eliminated.

Copyright Promotions (CPLG) appoints Stefan Kleine-Erfkamp to the new role of Head of Business Development, focusing on the development of the Fanshirt project into new markets.  Kleine-Erfkamp joins CPLG from Swiss-based marketing company Sports & Licensing where, as Chairman, he led the introduction of Fanshirt into the German football market.

The European Licensing Company (ELC) opens up a new office in Bucharest, Romania and takes a bigger office in Moscow, where the company will be looking to hire new team members.  ELC, which reps licensors including Warner Bros., Cartoon Network and Marvel in Eastern Europe, Russia and the CIS, now runs four offices in the region, in addition to an office in London, and affiliate offices in Istanbul and Athens.
