Cynopsis: Kids!
06/15/12
Good morning. It’s Friday, June 15, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Disney-ABC TV Group adds three kids products to its TV Everywhere rollout with Comcast. The operator’s authenticated cable subscribers can now access WATCH Disney Channel, WATCH Disney XD and WATCH Disney Junior via their iPhones, iPads, and iTouches, as well as online at WATCHDisneyChannel.com, WATCHDisneyXD.com and WATCHDisneyJunior.com. The services will include both live linear feeds as well as several on-demand episodes of shows. Comcast’s Xfinity TV customers who subscribe to those networks will be able to access the multi-platform distribution options.
PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Digital kids entertainment network Kabillion builds on its Bratz programming with the launch today of a live-action Bratz series on its Kabillion Girls Rule! channel. The network already carries an animated show, Bratz, based on the toy line. Bratz is Kabillion’s most popular show. The new show Passion for Fashion will be hosted by Brianna Gage, the 12-year-old star of Kabillion’s Bri What? She’ll be joined by other tween stars to discuss fashion trends. The deal comes through Kabillion’s content partnership with MGA Entertainment. Kabillion reaches more than 40 million digital homes through VOD and broadband.
The BBC’s preschool channel CBeebies greenlights three new series to its roster including Get Well Soon from Kindle Entertainment, as well as Mr Bloom’s Nursery: Get Set Grow! and I Can Cook-On the Go, which are adapted from existing CBeebies series’ Mr Bloom’s Nursery and I Can Cook. Get Well Soon is geared to help pre-schoolers understand visits to the doctor and should debut later this year. The Mr. Bloom’s Nursery show features the title character as he embarks on gardening adventures. It should debut in 2013. I Can Cook-on The Go will focus on healthy snacks for kids out and about and is slated to air in the fall. In related news, CBeebies is planning to carry a Father’s Day-themed lineup of shows this Sunday June 17 from 10a to 12p with episodes of 3rd and Bird and Rastamouse on its Spanish-language channel in the US.

LICENSING
Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products struck several deals at Licensing Show 2012 including a broad-ranging retail and promotional campaign for the fourth Ice Age film, Ice Age: Continental Drift, set to debut in theaters July 13. The release of the film coincides with global deals for a live entertainment version of the story in London’s Wembley Arena this fall, as well as partnerships with Toys ‘R’ Us in North America and Russia’s X-5 Retail Group. The stores will include an extensive line of plush toys, video games, children’s books, backpacks and lunch bags from the movie. Fox also will release branded Ice Age clothes through its deals with C&A and H&M. Beyond Ice Age, Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products plans to expand its ecommerce business around the world via brand-centric shops with social media platforms, starting in China.
ITV Studios Global Entertainment now handles UK rights for beloved children’s character Babar. The multi-year deal inked with Nelvana Enterprises and The Clifford Ross Company covers merchandising and licensing for the Babar brand including the books, the 1980s TV series, and the new animated series Babar and the Adventures of Badou. The French elephant is nearing his 80th birthday next year and ITVS GE’s initial line of products will focus on the vintage artwork of the brand in the UK market. In other news, ITVS GE also will handle UK, Eire, Australia and New Zealand rights for publishing, promotion, merchandising and home entertainment for the animated series Matt Hatter Chronicles via a deal with Platinum Films Limited.
Kids programmer HIT Entertainment teams up with Fisher-Price to create and market a global line of toys for animated series Mike the Knight, produced by HIT and Nelvana Enterprises, which airs on Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. in the US. The toyline is set to launch in the US and Canada in fall 2013 with plans to expand worldwide beginning in 2014.
FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) signs several new licensees for pre-school property Tree Fu Tom. They include: Random House Children’s Publishers for publishing; Aykroyd and TDP for children’s nightwear and underwear; Trade Mark Collections for bags, wallets and umbrellas; Spearmark for lunchware, tableware, drinkware and lighting; Worlds Apart for bedroom and play accessories; and Character World for bedroom textiles, furniture and accessories. FME said to expect additional details for the property in the near future. FME also signs a new deal with Review Fourteen for a line of Rebecca Bonbon-branded clothes for girls in 72 Peek & Cloppenburg stores in Europe. Rebecca Bonbon is a stylish French bulldog character created by the original Hello Kitty designer.
Online games site Miniclip.com kicks off an 8-week consumer marketing campaign this month with Del Taco Restaurants for a kids meal promotion in more than 525 restaurants in 17 states. Consumers will receive a Miniclip decoder toy with purchase and the toy will unlock exclusive games on the site.
Mattel’s Monster High line pairs up with YouTuber and 18-year-old founder of non-profit WeStopHate.org Emily-Anne Rigal to promote tween esteem in a deal that stretches across online platforms and Wal-Mart stores. The three-month, pro-social partnership includes downloadable online activities promoting tween esteem in tandem with the Monster High brand as well as displays in more than 1500 Wal-Mart stores and downloadable activities on Walmart.com.
