Good morning. It’s Friday, June 13, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Aladdin Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing, inks a deal with Meghan McCain to write a kid’s book about her dad, who happens to be Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain. The book, which doesn’t have a title yet, will be released the first week of September 2008 to coincide with the Republican National Convention. A portion of the publishers net proceeds from sales of the book will be donated to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.
Bravo picks up Top Chef Junior (8-episodes) from Magical Elves. Based on the Top Chef TV series, Top Chef Junior features tweens/teens 13-16 years old competing for the title of Junior Top Chef.
Nick Jr. premiers three new superhero-themed episodes of its series The Backyardigans, Go, Diego, Go! and The Wonder Pets! Friday, June 27, during its Superhero Playdate programming event (9a-12).
B Wooding, the US based production financier and international distributor, completes a number of international program deals, including for the following kids content:
- The Tale of Tillies Dragon is licensed to Alphaville Filmes for distribution on home video in Brazil, and to Europe Production for distribution in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
- MagnaVision acquires the DVD and audio distribution rights for Baby Genius, for distribution in the Philippines.
Toei Animation inks a deal with RTL2 (Germany) to acquire 48×30 episodes of Digimon Data Squad and 64×30 episodes of Dragonball GT from Toei Animation.

MARKETING/LICENSING
American Greetings Properties (AGP) names Hasbro as the new global master toy licensee for its Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears properties, from January 2009. The new Hasbro products will be based on and will coincide with debut of the new Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears CGI animated looks. The new Strawberry Shortcake look will be featured in a CGI animated movie set for release in theaters August 2009, which will be followed by a DVD release in September. Meanwhile, A CGI animated Care Bears movie is slated for release in September 2009. Additionally, AGP will manage licensing in-house for Care Bears, beginning January 2009, taking over all domestic licensing management from The Joester Loria Group. DIC Entertainment continues to serve as the global licensing agent for Strawberry Shortcake. StrawberryShortcake.com and Care-Bears.com are both part of www.AGKidZone.com .
Disney Consumer Products new line of tween-targeted merchandise based on Camp Rock, the new Disney Channel Original Movie, launches in nationwide at Target stores and Disney Stores beginning this Sunday, June 15. Camp Rock merchandise features a wide selection of products, including electronics, to apparel, accessories and footwear, bags and backpacks, home decor, books, fashion dolls, stationery and so on. Product will continue to rollout now through back-to-school season, and continue on eventually extending to other retail channels in spring 2009.
A new collection of Pepsi branded tops for juniors men and women, featuring a mix of original Pepsi heritage icons and slogans, will be available at Steve & Barry stores beginning this fall 2008. The Joester Loria Group represented Pepsi-Cola North America in the licensing arrangement.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Arthur A. Levine is named VP and Publishers, Arthur A. Levine Books, an imprint of Scholastic. Levine, who had been VP and Editorial Director of the imprint, is credited bringing some of the current bestselling authors of kids/young adult books to the US, including the J.K. Rowling, Philip Pullman, and Astrid Lindgren among others and launching the careers of many others.
Nancy Kanter is upped to SVP/Playhouse Disney Worldwide. Kanter, who had been SVP/Programming, Playhouse Disney US, reports to Gary Marsh, President/Entertainment, Disney Channels Worldwide. Kanter will continue to oversee the development and production of all long and short-form, live-action and animated programming, and she is charged with fusing the Playhouse Disney programming, marketing and brand management teams to ensure a cohesiveness of the brand.
