Cynopsis: Sports
07/29/11
Good morning. It’s Friday, July 29, 2011, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With labor peace on the NFL front, NBA players and owners will finally resume talks on Monday in an effort to move forward to creating a new CBA according to multiple reports. Commissioner David Stern is expected to be on hand as will Billy Hunter, the union’s Executive Director. . One month into the lockout, the two sides remain at opposite ends of the financial spectrum, with the league saying it lost about $300 million last season despite high ratings and are offering players 40% of basketball-related income. Last reports had the players offering to lower their take to 54.3%..
More information continues to roll in about the upcoming Pac-12 Networks. With four of the country’s largest cable operators in Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications and Bright House Networks on board to distribute the national and regional channels, the operators will also create a TV Everywhere experience via iN DEMAND to provide some production and operations services. The channel will continue to be wholly owned by the conference, unlike other conference-branded outlets, although Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour said that in the short-term, universities were not expecting any new revenue from the outlets. The conference deal is good for 12 years.
NFL Network is heading to Canton, announcing broadcast plans for the upcoming 47th Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony with seven hours of live coverage beginning at 4p on Aug. 6. Among the media personalities set to enter will be NFL Network’s Marshall Faulk and Deion Sanders, as well as NFL Films Founder Ed Sabol. The channel has lined up profiles throughout next week focusing on some of the newly-inducted members beginning Monday at 8p with Ed Sabol: King of Football Movies, followed by Sharpe Focus: Journey to Canton, Marshall Faulk: Rush to Canton, and Deion Sanders: Canton goes Primetime later in the week.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter told reporters that he would reexamine the decision to have Qatar host the 2022 World Cup provided evidence of corruption emerged from FIFA investigations. Allegations of corruption, led by as well as other recent scandals have called into question the process which is now being investigated by FIFA. Blatter also suggested that there was a chance of shifting the tournament to the winter in order to avoid the Gulf heat in June and July.
ESPN is set to feature the Cardinals/Cubs game for Sunday Night Baseball this weekend, lining up Dan Shulman for commentary with analysts Bobby Valentine and Orel Hershiser, and reporters Buster Olney and Wendi Nix. Monday Night Baseball will pit the Red Sox against the Indians. Sean McDonough will offer commentary with analysts Rick Sutcliffe and Aaron Boone, and reporter Tim Kurkjian.
Conference USA’s 2011 Football Media Day is locked in for Sunday, July 31 in Memphis, TN with the conference’s TV partners locking in broadcast coverage of the event. C-USA Media Day Recap, a 30-minute show with highlights from media day, is set to run on FOX Sports Southwest, FOX Sports Houston, and FOX Sports Oklahoma that evening at 9:30 p, as well as Sports South on Monday at 4p and Sun Sports at 6p. FOX Sports Southwest will also produce two Football Preview shows set to air and re-air during the two weeks prior to the CFB season starting. FOX Sports will also provide a live webcast of C-USA Media Day from 1-3p on foxsportssouthwest.com, foxsportshouston.com, and foxsportssouth.com.
Over to the east coast, CAA Football has announced plans for the nation’s most watched Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) television package in the 2011 season with a 28-game TV schedule. Platforms include primary partner Comcast Sports Group, including Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic and Comcast SportsNet New England, as well as broadcasts on ESPN3.com, CBS Sports Network and the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Regional television package. Delaware will see the most exposure, with seven games set to be televised, followed by James Madison University, Richmond and William & Mary.
ESPN has renewed a new multi-year agreement with pay-TV service CanalSat that will offer carriage of ESPN America and ESPN Classic throughout France, Monaco and Switzerland.
CBS’ broadcast of PGA Golf with the Canadian Open saw a nice bump in final national Nielsen ratings, with Saturday’s third round coverage of the event averaging a 1.0/3 with 1.4 million viewers, for a 25% jump over 2010. Sunday’s final round coverage fared even better, drawing a 1.8/4 with 2.5 million viewers for a 50% rise over last year.
Fox’s coverage of Sunday’s Germany Grand Prix continued the sport’s rating spike trends this season. The race delivered a 0.9/3 with over 1.4 million viewers for a 50% rise over last year’s broadcast of the same race. Through four races, Formula One Racing on FOX is averaging a 0.8/2 with more than 1.2 million viewers per race, up 14% for the season in households and up 25% in audiences.
Univision’s coverage of the 2011 Copa America wrapped up on Sunday with a 1.2/3 for the Uruguay/Paraguay Championship. That score was off 45% from the previous event in 2007 (which features Brazil and Argentina) but still topped sports shows for the week across male demos. Overall, the tournament was down 43% from 2007’s 2.1/4.
Sponsorship & Promotion
Crown Royal is moving to Indianapolis, inking a multi-year deal to serve as entitlement sponsor of NASCAR’s Brickyard 400. The deal will rename the event as the Crown Royal “Your Hero’s Name Here” 400 at the Brickyard, in honor of U.S. service men and women. The company will hold a contest to select a fan’s name that will be incorporated into the title. NASCAR will also be holding its Fuel for Business Meeting this morning in Indianapolis, where official partners of the sport will swap on making a sponsorship more effective. There are currently 55 members of the NASCAR Fuel for Business Council.
GroupM Entertainment and Sports Partnerships has tapped Bryce Townsend as the CEO of the entertainment and sports consultancy unit. Townsend succeeds Greg Luckman, who is leaving the company for a senior position at CAA Sports. Townsend was Executive Vice President & General Manager, North America for GroupM ESP, originally joining the company in 2007
XGames is known for breaking barriers, and now a group of people watching Moto X events yesterday and today are creating a message board called Human Twitter. 160 fans seated in Section 112, Rows 6-12 make up a message board that will spell out various tweets with the hashtag #HumanTwitter, one letter at a time – in analog fashion. Human Twitter is being featured on the Jumbotron and during broadcast, and the user’s handle will be appended to the tweet so that everyone knows who sent it.
Note to self, don’t mess with Rory McIlroy’s caddy. A tweet from BBC golf commentator Jay Townsend suggesting that McIlroy’s course management could benefit with the hiring of Tiger Wood’s former caddy Stevie Williams drew a return fire from the pro. McIlroy tweeted that Townsend should shut up as he’s a failed golfer and his opinion means nothing.
In My Opinion …
- The upcoming Pac-12 networks are taking a look, the Longhorn network is taking a look, and now the NCAA is taking a look. Is high school sports on a university-branded TV network really a sly recruiting advantage or is it inevitable in a digital society desperate for content? The answer, of course, is both and I give props to the NCAA for quickly pulling together the summit to explore the issue. If a university or conference feels its brand is strong enough to carry a network, great, but how much more friction will the have-nots be able to handle? Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said Thursday he was concerned about the potential negative effects of high school football games on Texas’ Longhorn Network calling it a “Pandora’s Box.” And that is literally what it is. Of course, I fully expect games to (eventually) be allowed.
