Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, July 29, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

David Tennant and Sophie Aldred, both formerly of Doctor Who, join the voiceover cast of the new CBeebies (UK) and FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) multiplatform, fantasy/action/adventure animated preschool series, Tree Fu Tom.  Tenant and Aldred star in the series as the voices of best friends Twigs and Tom. The cast also features voices of Tim Whitnall, Samantha Dakin, and Sharon D. Clarke.  The physical movement-focused series revolves around 8-year-old Tom, an average kid until he puts on his magic belt and is able to perform unique magic action-movements, known as Tree Fu, which transforms the small boy into a super-hero and transports him to the enchanted kingdom.  Slated to launch on CBeebies in early 2012, Tree Fu Tom is a co-production between CBeebies In-House Production and FremantleMedia Enterprises.  Blue Zoo Animation will produce the animation for the series.  Jackie Edwards and Alison Stewart serve as executive producers for the BBC, and Sander Schwartz and Bob Higgins for FME.  Tree Fu Tom was created Daniel Bays, who is also producing the series.  FME will distribute Tree Fu Tom outside of the UK and manage all other ancillary rights globally.

MORE KIDS STUFF

PBS Kids will premiere new episodes of Super Why! ( www.pbskids.org/superwhy) and a new character this fall.  The literacy-centric preschool series will introduce Woofster, a puppy with Dictionary Power, in five new episodes during Meet Woofster Week, beginning September 12 (check local listings for times).  Produced by Out of the Blue Enterprises in conjunction with Canada’s Decode Entertainment and C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures, Super Why! is funded in part by a Ready To Learn grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the US Department of Education, in partnership with PBS.

In the US, CBeebies will debut the second season of 3D interactive series Dibujemos con Squiglet on Tuesday, August 2, at 9p (CST), as part of channel’s Tiempo de Descubrir (Time to Discover) programming block.  Dibujemos con Squiglet encourages preschoolers to be creative and let their imagination run wild.  Cbeebies, the BBC’s preschool channel, broadcasts in Spanish and is available in the US on Channel 848 as part of Dish Networks’ DishLatino package.

DHX Media, a producer/distributor/licensor of live action and animated programming, enters into a worldwide music publishing administration deal with indie music publisher ole.  In addition to delivering the music administration rights to 40+ produced or co-produced TV series, many of which are kid, family and/or youth aimed, in the DHX Media catalog, the deal will also see ole administrate the music publishing for the entire DHX Media group of companies. This adds DHX Media’s content produced by the Toronto and Halifax production studios to ole’s previously completed deals with Studio B and Wildbrain Entertainment (Yo Gabba Gabba!), an entertainment studio, which were subsequently acquired by DHX Media.  The deal builds on ole’s existing presence in kid’s music publishing arena. Ole co-owns considerable catalogs and has relationships companies including Cookie Jar, Nelvana, WGBH and Random House.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The Jim Henson Company, Random House Children’s Books and Paramount Home Entertainment team with Amtrak for a nationwide promotion in August to support the new season premiere of the animated preschool series Dinosaur Train:  Dinosaur Big City on PBS Kids August 22, and the DVD release the following day.   The promotion, which runs throughout August, also includes the family-targeted Amtrak  Dinosaur Train Sweepstakes, which offers the winning family a trip.  The promotion will feature Dinosaur Train placemats on long distance trains, while seatbacks, counter cards, activity book giveaways will be available at 100+ stations nationwide to support the DVD release and sweepstakes.  Additionally, one million ticket jackets will be used system wide featuring Dinosaur Train.  The Dinosaur Big City DVD title will also include an Amtrak offer in 50,000 units.  Craig Bartlett (series creator), Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford executive produce the new season. The Jim Henson Company oversees all ancillary exploitation (including licensing and merchandising) of the property, while PBS handles DVD distribution to consumer and education markets. Dinosaur Train is co-produced with Singapore-based Sparky Animation, with the participation and assistance of the Singapore Media Development Authority. UK production and financial support is provided by Ingenious Media.

Litton Entertainment is partnering with Georgia Aquarium to support the launch of Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin, its new half-hour TV series hosted by Jeff Corwin and set to launch on Saturday, September 3, 2011.  The educational series will air as part of Litton’s Weekend Adventure, a new three-hour Saturday morning program block that will include six series and that has been cleared on 95% of the country’s ABC affiliates following Good Morning America in most of those markets.

Hasbro and Target Corporation partner for an exclusive My Little Pony retail program that launches in Target stores this week.  The girl-targeted promotion will feature My Little Pony merchandise based on the world of Canterlot from Hasbro Studios’ animated series My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, which airs on The Hub.  The My Little Pony promotions will be featured in the “Canterlot” out-of-aisle premium space section in the toy department of Target stores, and will include products such as t-shirts, bedding, and books, arts and crafts, activity sets, and exclusive toys.
