Good Morning. It’s Friday, July 27, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Never shying away from a woman with a point of view, The View is in the final negotiation stages of making Whoopi Goldberg a full time panelist. According to Variety, the negotiations with Whoopi are ongoing, as well as with standup comic Sherri Shepherd, and ABC could end up making an announcement it has signed both women to the show, which would bring it back up to its original complement of four plus Barbara.

Disney said it first, and now Hallmark Channel is following suit – no more smoking in any of its original films. In a letter to House Telecommunications & Internet Subcommittee Chairman Ed Markey (D-Mass.) , Hallmark President Henry Schlieff wrote in part, “It is our decision to make a commitment to you that we will discourage and, in fact, seek to eliminate any further depiction of cigarette smoking in our original movies.” That’s a pretty big statement, given Hallmark’s plans to produce 30 original movies in the next calendar year.
The Sportsman Channel (TSC) will soon gain new distribution outlets as the hunting and fishing network will be seen in Time Warner Cable’s Enterprise and Dothan, AL markets next month in addition to Charter Communication’s St. Cloud, MN market. Just recently, TSC started in Indianapolis via Comcast Communications.
In this corner, we have Barry Bonds. In that corner we have Bob Costas. Bonds refers to Costas as a “little midget man who knows (nothing) about baseball.” And in response, Costas says: “As anyone can plainly see, I’m 5-6 1/2 and a strapping 150, and unlike some people, I came by all of it naturally.” America’s pasttime.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
Joining the cast of ABC‘s Friday night drama series The Murder Club will be Rob Estes, in the role of Angie Harmon’s ex-husband. The show revolves around a group of women, detective (Harmon), reporter and a coroner, who meet regularly to discuss and hopefully solve murder cases. The show is based on several James Patterson novels.
Showtime is looking at a project from Scout Prods called The Beard, about a gay baseball player who creates a relationship with a woman to help hide his preferences. According to Variety, the project is billed as a romantic comedy, the script will be written by Maria Maggenti.
Another deal with Scout Prods – this one with ABC Family for a project called The Deads about a family of 300 year old witches who come back from the dead, and move into suburbia. They quickly learn the mores of the day are quite similar to what they were 300 years ago. This project will be written by Bill Masters and Tim Griffin.
Sony Pictures TV has four pilots in the works –
- CBS is looking at a comedy project called My Best Friend’s Girl, about the friendship between two guys and how it changes when one of the guys starts dating his buddy’s ex-wife. CBS has given this project a cast-contingent order.
- A drama project at Lifetime called Practice, about a woman working at a large and prestigious Philadelphia law firm owned by a large and prestigious family.
- A&E has picked up the drama project Danny Fricke, about a woman homicide detective in the LAPD. This project is co-produced with 25C Prods.
- SIS is a project for Spike TV about an elite police squad who follow bad guys and lay in wait for them to commit crimes. SIS stands for Special Investigative Squad. This project is co-produced with Original Films.
Casting Call: BET has launched Sunday Best a national competition show which will determine the next great undiscovered gospel singer in America. The show will debut on the network October 2 at 8p. Sunday Best will audition the first 500 persons at each stop and 20 judged finalists will travel to Los Angeles to begin the competition. The ultimate winner will receive cash and prizes for themselves and more for their home church. The first audition location will be The Renaissance Montura Hotel in Los Angeles on August 4 at 9a, followed by Atlanta on August 11 and Chicago on August 18. TiVo Inc. has tapped Karen Bressner to be SVP/Advertising Sales, from Viacom International where she was SVP/National Advertising Sales for Nick at Nite, TV Land and TVLAND.com. In her new position, Karen will be based in New York and will report directly to Tom Rogers, President/CEO, TiVo.
Katherine Foster has been appointed GM of WUVF-WLZE/Ft. Myers-Naples, the Univision and Telefutura affiliates respectively, owned by Equity Media Holdings Corporation.
Libby Beers, SVP/Original Movies for Lifetime, has chosen to leave the network, tho will continue to work with Lifetime in a consultancy role. Libby had been with the network since 1999, and no reason was given for her departure.
Veoh Networks has named former Yahoo! SVP Steve Mitgang as CEO, succeeding founding CEO Dmitry Shapiro, who will now become Founder/Chief Innovation Officer and will stay active in advancing the company’s technology initiatives. Additionally, Veoh has added Jennifer Betka as SVP/Marketing from Sirius Satellite Radio where she served as VP/Interactive. In her new role, Jennifer will spearhead brand growth through integrated marketing and content development efforts.
Michele Grant has become EVP/News and Sport with BBC Worldwide America. She will supervise the commissioning and content development of BBC News and Sports programs and news services in the U.S. and will be based at the BBC News Bureau in Washington, D.C.
Mike Milbury, former NHL player, coach and front office executive, will soon begin as a Studio Analyst for NBC’s NHL Game of the Week program. The show, which was formerly broadcast from the network’s Rockefeller Plaza headquarters, will now be broadcast live on location from the various game sites.

Wednesday – A18-49 Analysis: FOX bounded ahead of the pack Wednesday night winning with a 2.9/10 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. FOX swept the first two hours: at 8p So You Think You Can Dance was #1 at 2.8/10, then the combo of So You/Dance and Don’t Forget the Lyrics averaged a 3.0/9 to stay in the lead during 9p. NBC was the powerhouse at 10p, as Dateline came in first with a 2.9/9.
