What resonates with TV viewers? Ad campaigns that feature realistic rather than stereotypical families, according the NBCUniversal Integrated Media‘s “Brand Power Index,” which measures the 500 most-buzzed-about brands each quarter. In its latest findings, the group points out that marketers are taking note of the fact that only 4% of today’s families are considered traditional (working dad, stay-at-home mom, kids living under their roof). Brands that earned big consumer buzz include Samsung, which featured a father watching a video to learn how to swaddle his baby, and Oscar Mayer, whose Grandpa Frank represents the increase in multigenerational families. “It’s important to see consumers buzzing about brands that have moved past traditional stereotypes and created marketing messages to mirror the new faces in our families today  from multi-generations living together, to confident single dads, to same sex couples,” said John Shea, EVP and CMO, NBCUniversal Integrated Media.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

They hadn’t come to terms by Thursday morning, but CBS and Time Warner Cable could agree on one thing: a four-day extension of their contract negotiation deadline that avoided 13 CBS-owned stations going dark. Time Warner is balking at the significantly higher retransmission consent fees CBS is demanding, while CBS maintains the hike is reasonable. The new deadline is Monday, July 29 at 5p. But the gloves were still off: On Wednesday night, CBS aired an ad aimed during Big Brother asking, “What’s worse than being evicted from the Big Brother house? How about Time Warner Cable evicting Big Brother from your house?”

Contract battles won’t be the problem of Time Warner Cable chief Glenn Britt for too much longer. The cable company announced that Britt will retire at the end of the year, replaced by current COO Rob Marcus. Succession talks had been underway for several years. Recalling for the New York Times his start in the early stages of the cable business in the 1970s Britt said, “I thought that it was either going to be a huge thing, maybe in every home, or that it was going to be a complete failure.”

A day after Google announced its new Internet video device, Chromecast, it was out of stock. Offering simple set-up and a $35 price tag, Chromecast plugs into an HDTV to deliver Netflix streaming service, YouTube videos and music purchased through Google Play. And no remote: Wi-Fi-based Chromecast works with mobile devices to control browsing and playback. Forbes dubs it “a game changer.”

Nielsen‘s quarterly Global AdView Plus report claims TV is still the place to be for advertising investment, with 59% media share and 3.5% global growth, and continued slow decline in print. Where did digital fit in? “We see trends continuing in media, with less-steep ad spend increases in TV and very slight declines in print, making way for growth in the digital space,” said Randall Beard, global head, Advertiser Solutions for Nielsen. “Although these changes in traditional media are slight, it’s worth noting how the placement of ad dollars is shifting over time.”

Russia’s anti-gay legislation, which includes a law allowing authorities to detain tourists or foreign nationals who are gay or pro-gay, casts a cloud on NBC‘s coverage of the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi. While the International Olympic Committee said that they have “received assurances from the highest level of the government in Russia that the legislation will not affect those attending or taking part in the Games,” the increasingly loud condemnations of Russia’s laws has human rights activists urging NBC to take action. Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, sent a letter to NBCUniversal CEO Stephen Burke urging the company “to expose this inhumane and unjust law to the millions of American viewers who will tune in to watch the Games.”

Country artists and music will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 6 at the annual CMA Awards on ABC. Winners are determined by the over 7000 members of CMA.

To read, or not to read? That’s the question facing the stars of AMC‘s new unscripted series Owner’s Manual. TV carpenters Ed Sanders (ABC‘s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition) and Marcus Hunt (HGTV‘s Hammer Heads) have opposing views on whether to follow the rules or follow their instincts, which will be put to the test on challenges involving working on projects like stunt planes and heavy locomotives. The series bows on Thursday, August 15 at 10p.

At the TCA for his upcoming show on Adult Swim, Rick and Morty, Community creator Dan Harmon couldn’t dodge questions about his contentious, on-again, off-again relationship with NBC – and said despite all the feuding, he had no choice but to return to the show. “If I had not gone back, the worst case scenario was 30 years of wondering. I had to go back,” he said. “The worst case scenario if I go back is one s****y season.”

Football’s Deion Sanders branches out into reality TV on OWN‘s new series, It’s Prime Time (working title). The focus is on kids, not sports, as Sanders balances life at home with his five children, his mother and her foster children and the charter school he started, Prime Prep Academy, for underserved kids. The series, produced by Edmonds Entertainment, Prime Time Media Ventures and Rogue Atlas Productions in association with Lionsgate, bows in 2014.

Animal Planet shines a light on rescue dogs in a one-hour doc that includes archival photos, videos and dramatic recreations. “Hero Dogs of 9/11 is the very first special to closely examine how the dogs played a pivotal role in saving lives at Ground Zero,” Tanya Kelen, who developed and exec-produced the special and is CEO of Kelencontent, tells Cynopsis. “This is an unknown story for most Americans.”

Stories of people who fought for their life are recounted in Investigation Discovery‘s new 1-ep series, Surviving Evil. The show is hosted by Charisma Carpenter (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), who was herself held at gunpoint in a violent 1991 attack. Premiere is Wednesday, August 28 at 10p

H2 has handed Thing-a-ma-bob, featuring inventor Bob Partington, a 10-ep order. In each show Partington is charged with taking three random items and creating something practical. The show, from T Group Productions and 1st Avenue Machine, will launch in 2014. “Bob’s ability to take everyday objects and transform them into a new form of functional equipment or out of the ordinary technology is mind-blowing,” Jenny Daly, president of T Group, tells Cynopsis. “The ideas that come out of his mind are truly exceptional.”

CMT goes behind the scenes at Sturgis, South Dakota’s popular motorcycle festival for Bike Week, 10 hours of programming centered around the 2013 Sturgis Rally. Shows about the event’s death-defying stunts and outrageous competitions air Monday, August 18 through Saturday, August 24.

James Gray has hopped aboard Sundance Channel to direct its original scripted series The Red Road. Gray’s “ability to get terrific performances out of actors and to create tough minded emotional thrillers with a heart will be a great asset,” said Nena Rodrigue, head of original programming.

Lady Gaga has been announced as a performer at the MTV Video Music Awards. Show airs Sunday, August 25 at 9p.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Time Warner Cable’s standoff with CBS hasn’t resulted in a blackout yet, but stations in four markets did go dark thanks to a separate TW Cable contract dispute with Journal Broadcast Group over what the cable company described as a 200% fare hike. Milwaukee’s WTMJ (NBC), Green Bay’s WGBA (NBC), Omaha’s KMTV (CBS) and Palm Spring, CA’s KMIR (NBC) went off the air after they couldn’t strike a deal Wednesday night. TW Cable directed affected customers to primetime programming on CBS.com and video-on-demand for NBC shows, as well as online streaming services.

The American Cable Assn., Time Warner Cable and DirecTV are calling foul on Gannett’s proposed acquisition of Belo Corp.‘s five broadcast stations. The deal includes Gannett divesting Belo’s TV assets in three markets, but the company “will retain effective control of all these stations through various sharing agreements,” contends a filing with the FCC, which could hike transmission fees and lead to more contract disputes.

Shout! Factory has struck a deal with ITV Studios Global Entertainment to distribute ITV’s library of movie classics on home entertainment and digital platforms. “Many of these iconic films have been unavailable or long out of print,” said Shout! Factory founders Richard Foos, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos. “We look forward to brining these cinematic treasures back to their original luster.”

~ PRODUCTION & DISTRIBUTION ~

Grey’s Anatomy showrunners/EPs Tony Phelan and Joan Rater have signed a two-year deal with CBS Television Studios to develop projects. They’ll leave Grey’s after season ten, starting at CBS in 2014.

Anne Heche  recently of NBC‘s Save Me – has signed a first-look deal with Universal TV that involves both producing and acting. “Anne has proven, time and again, to be both a wonderfully gifted actor and a hard-working producer with fantastic taste,” said Jennifer Salke, president of NBC Entertainment

Comedy writer Dana Klein has signed a deal to develop projects for 20th Century Fox TV. “She’s everything we look for in a comedy writer,” said 20th TV chairman Gary Newman. “She’s wildly funny, she writes really grounded characters, she draws from her friends’ life experiences to make characters feel authentic.”

~ CASTING NEWS ~

Heidi Klum plays politics in the season six premiere of NBC‘s Parks and Recreation. The Project Runway host is the mayor of a town in Denmark on the one-hour ep, airing Thursday, September 26 at 8p.

Season three of FOX‘s New Girl brings the return of Merritt Wever, Schmidt’s (Max Greenfield) college girlfriend, Elizabeth. Wever, who has twice won Supporting Emmy noms for her role on Showtime‘s Nurse Jackie, will appear on New Girl’s Tuesday, September 17 premiere as well as at least one other episode.

Indira Varma (Rome) has been cast on season four of HBO‘s Game of Thrones. She’ll play the love interest of a new character, “The Red Viper.”

Jason Sudekis announced on CBS’s Letterman Wednesday night that he won’t be returning to NBC’s Saturday Night Live.

~ RATINGS ~

NUVOtv enjoyed a record-busting night with its July 18 launch of Night of Premieres. The English-language cabler aimed at Latinos led off with Jennifer Lopez: Her Life. Her Journey at 8p, the most-watched original program in its history. A Step Away followed, to become the net’s second most-watched original program. The 10p hour’s reality show House of Joy was the highest-debuting series ever for NUVO-tv. The night brought the net 625,000 total viewers. “These ratings confirm for us what we knew: Modern Latinos are actively seeking culturally relevant entertainment in English,” Michael Schwimmer, CEO of NUVOtv tells Cynopsis. “It’s always gratifying when hard work pays off.”
