Cynopsis: Kids!

7/18/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, July 18, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Nickelodeon UK plans to launch NickToonsters on satellite on Sky Digital this August 18, 2008.  Targeted to the younger K5-7 set and leaning more towards girls, NickToonsters will air 7a-7p and will feature programming lineup including Rugrats, CatDog, The Wild Thornberries and Hey Arnold.

A big win for Mattel yesterday as a jury in a Federal Court handed down its decision, which found that Carter Bryant, a former Mattel doll designer, created the Bratz doll design drawings, prototypes and sculpts while still working for Mattel.  Additionally, the jury found that MGA Entertainment, which launched the Bratz doll line in 2001, intentionally interfered and aided and abetted Bryant’s various breaches of contract with Mattel.  Furthermore, the verdict found that MGA’s CEO, Isaac Larian was a participant in encouraging Bryant’s actions.  The damages phase of the case will begin next week and there is a lot to work out.  Reuters reports that MGA Entertainment issued a statement explaining that Mattel was suing MGA solely for the initial 2001 line of Bratz dolls, and quoting Larian, who said “under no circumstance will Mattel be able to assert ownership of the Bratz franchise  which will always belong to MGA.”

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has announced nominations for the 2008 Primetime Emmy, which includes nods for a handful of kid-targeted shows.  The Emmy’s will be awarded in two ceremonies; the 60th Annual Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be held Saturday, September 13 at the Nokia Theatre L.A. and will be televised on E! on Saturday, September 20 at 8p, while the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards handed out Sunday, September 21 on ABC (8p), live from the Nokia Theatre L.A.  While it is great to see the kid/family targeted shows nominated for the Primetime prize, you’ll note they are often up against shows that are aimed at a more mature audiences (which is not to say that kids aren’t watching them, but they aren’t intended for kids).  Below is a selection of some of the categories including kid-targeted show receiving nominations, the full list can be found at www.emmys.tv:

MARKETING/LICENSING

Penguin Young Readers has released animated webisodes to support its new middle-school kid targeted novel Sir Fartsalot Hunts the Booger by author Kevin Bolger (Razorbill, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group).  Designed to be “lowbrow and slapstick” the webisode, titled sir Fartsalot vs. the Dragon, can be found at YouTube and aims to drive kids to the book’s website www.sirfartsalot.com .

Chorion names Bandai Spain as the toy distributor for Noddy in Spain.  The deal comes on the heels of the appointment of NSR as the global master toy licensee, with Spin Master named as distributor in the UK and Lansay as distributor for France and the Benelux.

Correction: the story in yesterday’s edition about Kidthing and Wee Sing contained an incorrect link, which should have read www.kidthing.com.
