Cynopsis: Kids!

07/17/09

Good morning. It’s Friday, July 17, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The wait is over as Hasbro and Discovery Communications tap kid’s entertainment industry veteran Margaret Loesch to serve as President and CEO of their new joint kid-targeted TV network.  Slated to launch in fall 2010, the still un-named network will be available to approximately 60 million US households in the Discovery Kids channel position.  Loesch officially takes on her new role next month and will be based in LA.  Most recently co-founder and CEO of the kids/family media company The Hatchery, Loesch was previously President and CEO, Fox Kids Network, Worldwide, and President and CEO, Crown Media US and its US Hallmark Channel.  She also served as EVP/Hanna-Barbera Productions, President and CEO, Marvel Productions and President/Television, Worldwide of The Him Henson Group.  Announced this spring, the new Hasbro-Discovery channel and online component will feature original content based on Hasbro properties, including animation, game shows and live-action series and specials, as well as content from Discovery Kids’ library and shows from third-party producers.  The Discovery Kids channel will continue to run until the new channel takes over in 2010.  Discovery plans to hang onto the Discovery Kids brand for use on its ongoing international TV networks and its licensing and merchandising program.

MORE KIDS STUFF

TV-Loonland inks deals for several of its properties with broadcasters in Asia, where the shows will launch this fall.  Nickelodeon Asia acquires all format rights to Pat & Stan (39×7, 1×30 special, 350 shorts).  Additionally Pat & Stan was recently picked up by Cartoon Network Korea, with EBS taking the terrestrial TV rights in South Korea, while discussions for the DVD rights in the region continue.  Disney Japan picks up TV rights for Leon (52×3), with Cartoon Networks Japan adding Raymond (78×7) to its programming lineup.  Additional deals closed this summer include ATV Hong Kong acquiring The Little Princess Seasonal Specials for fall and winter, and Well Go USA taking the Pay TV rights for Rainbow Fish in Taiwan.

Demi Lovato‘s (Sonny With a Chance, Princess Protection Program, Camp Rock) new album, Here We Go Again, premieres tomorrow on Radio Disney’s Planet Premiere, hosted by Ernie D, at 7p.  Also, the new album can also be streamed and heard online at RadioDisney.com from tomorrow through Friday, July 24.  The Radio Disney premiere of the Hollywood Records album will include an interview with Lovato as well as playing songs.

The closing keynote speech at MIPJUNIOR this October 2009 will be given by Mahmoud Bouneb, Executive GM, Al Jazeera Children’s Channel and preschool channel Baraem.  The 17th edition of MIPJUNIOR at the Carlton Hotel, Cannes will be held October 3-4.

MTV Networks International (MTVNI) launches Impact Productions, a Warsaw and Budapest-based multi-platform content production entity that will create content for MTVNI’s Emerging Markets Group, including MTVNHD the international music and kids HD service, as well as other third party channels in the region.  Headquartered in Warsaw, with an office in Budapest, Impact Productions will also have a dedicated Digital Media Hub, based in Warsaw, which will create original ringtones, wallpapers and short-form content.  Magdalena Szwedkowicz is appointed Head of Impact Productions and will be responsible for managing the TV operations of the production house and driving new business development plans.  Based in Warsaw, she will report into Izabella Wiley, GM and SVP, MTVN Poland.  Most recently, Szwedkowicz toiled for ATM Grupa as an Executive Producer in the international department.
