Cynopsis: Kids!
07/13/12
Good morning. It’s Friday, July 13, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Saban Brands unveils that its new kid-targeted Saturday morning action-adventure programming block on The CW will be titled Vortexx. The new five-hour Vortexx programming block will officially launch on The CW on Saturday, August 25, 2012 (7a-12n). In conjunction with the new programming block, Saban Brands will also launch a new website (www.myvortexx.com, you’ll find a countdown to launch clock there now) as well as mobile offerings so that kids can access Vortexx whenever and wherever they are. Vortexx, which will air nationwide on all CW affiliated stations, will be anchored by popular franchises such as Power Rangers and Yu-Gi-Oh!, in addition to other soon-to-be-announced action-adventure and comedy shows.
Production has begun on Disney XD’s new mixed live-action and hand puppet series, Crash & Bernstein. The multi-camera series revolves around Wyatt Bernstein, the sole son in a family of four kids, whose new puppet, Crash, comes to life and becomes the loud-mouthed brother he’s never had. Crash & Bernstein is slated to premiere in fall 2012 on Disney XD. The puppet was designed and built by Chiodo Brothers Productions. Created by Eric Friedman (Austin & Ally, I’m In The Band) and executive produced by Friedman and Mike Larsen (Real Time with Bill Maher, Rodney), Crash & Bernstein is a production of It’s A Laugh Productions.
CBBC (UK) has ordered a new sketch comedy series (13×28, title TBA) from Citrus Television (Horrible Histories). Slated to debut in early 2013, the physical comedy show will focus on the love of sports, hatred of sports, fitness and unfitness, bodily perfection and embarrassing bodies – and will feature a mix of “traditional sketches and mischievous silent comedy where mime artists, clowning experts, jugglers and acrobats will pop up bringing energy to the series.” The ensemble cast includes Tony Paul Way (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Game Of Thrones), Aisling Bea (Dead Boss, Cardinal Burns), and Marie Beeput (White Van Man, Peepshow). Additionally, special guest star Peter Serafinowicz will appear in one sketch per episode as his popular character Brian Butterfield, the overweight businessman originally created for his BBC Two series The Peter Serofinowicz Show. The series will be directed by Dominic Brigstocke (I’m Alan Partridge, Green Wing) and Al Campbell (Screenwipe), produced by James Serafinowicz and series produced by Caroline Norris (Dead Boss, Armstrong And Miller) and Giles Pilbrow (Have I Got News For You, Spitting Image).
Kindle Entertainment enters into a co-production pact with Hachette UK, which recently acquired a majority of the estate of author Enid Blyton from Chorion, to create a new TV series based on Blyton’s beloved kid’s book series, The Famous Five. Kindle Entertainment will pitch the TV series to broadcasters and distributors to secure funding to produce the series. In developing The Famous Five series, Kindle plans to maintain the core values of the original stories (first published in 1942), while designing a program that is appealing to kid’s today. The new series will include an element of time travel that follows the protagonist George, a modern girl, and her dog Timmy as they are transported back through the decades to Kirrin Bay in 1954. There, she meets characters Julian, Dick and Anne, who are spending the summer with Uncle Quentin and Aunt Fanny. The ‘Famous Five’ will embark on numerous adventures based on Blyton’s original plots. Through each episode George will gradually learn more about Uncle Quentin’s mysterious experiments before all is revealed in a final twist. Prior to this there have been several TV adaptations of The Famous Five.

Fred Figglehorn returns in the new TV movie Fred 3: Camp Fred, premiering Saturday, July 28 at 8p on Nickelodeon. Based on Lucas Cruikshank’s popular internet character Fred Figglehorn, this third Fred TV movie stars Cruikshank as Fred, as well as Tom Arnold, WWE Superstar John Cena (as Fred’s imaginary dad), Charlie Carver (Desperate Housewives), Daniella Monet (Victorious), Jake Weary (As the World Turns) and Carlos Knight (Supah Ninjas). The new movie finds Fred enrolled in the worst summer camp ever, where he is miserable until he meets a motley group of campers who teach him what camp is really all about – making friends. But of course there are rivals too. Fred 3: Camp Fred will be supported by the new site at www.nick.com/fred and will serve as a first-look location for fans to get information and facts about the movie and view exclusive footage for Fred and his world. Leading up to the premiere the site will feature behind the scenes footage, an interactive camp map, letters from Fred, quizzes, games, with new content added regularly. The new movie is executive produced by Varsity Pictures’ Brian Robbins, The Collective’s Michael Green, Gary Binkow and Evan Weiss, and Cruikshank. The movie is written by Drew Hancock (Supah Ninjas, Fred: The Show) and directed by Jonathan Judge (Fred: The Show, Big Time Rush).
Disney Channel orders up a fourth season of its live-action comedy Good Luck Charlie. Created by Phil Baker and Drew Vaupen and executive-produced by Baker, Vaupen and Dan Staley, Good Luck Charlie stars Bridgit Mendler, Jason Dolley, Leigh-Allyn Baker, Bradley Steven Perry, Mia Talerico and Eric Allan Kramer. The first kid’s version of Fort Boyard launched on CITV and Disney XD worldwide in January 2012 and October 2011 respectively. Zodiak Rights controls the worldwide finished program and format rights for Fort Boyard.

The Green Weenie: Pooch Patrol, which follows the playable adventures of an adventure seeking dog and his pals, will be released as interactive storybooks – iReaders – for iOS devices as well as for Nook later this year. The second project is Tickle Monsters, about two brothers and the numerous ticklish creates that live under their bed. The Hartman deal was brokered by The Gotham Group.

The Great Cookie Thief features narration by Cookie Monster (voiced by David Rudman, who plays him on Sesame Street), visual identification and observation activities, variable story paths and alternate endings, a create mode where players can create, print and share “Wanted” posters, and parent tips among other things. The app will initially be available for a special introductory price of $0.99.
