Cynopsis: Kids!

7/13/07

Good morning. It’s Friday, July 13, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.  And remember – Cynopsis is on vacation all next week, so the next edition you’ll receive is on the 23rd.  Have a good week!

Warner Bros. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix took in an estimated $44.2 million in its first full day, Wednesday, July 11, 2007, per Box Office Mojo.  The $44.2 million total, which includes the $12 million worth of box office receipts from the midnight screenings, makes HP and the Order of the Phoenix the new king of Wednesday movie openings, knocking Spider-Man 2 (Sony) and its Wednesday, June 30, 2004 take of $40.4 million out the top position.  HP and the Order of the Phoenix also moves in as the fifth largest opening day ever, supplanting Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (Buena Vista), which had held the spot with $42.9 million since it opened on May 25 of this year.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Warner Bros. has picked up the movie rights to Septimus Heap, a popular seven-book fantasy series by author Angie Sage, from publisher HarperCollins.  The movie adaptation of Septimus Heap: Magyk, the first book title in the series, will be produced by Karen Rosenfelt (Devil Wears Prada) with author Sage serving as executive producer.  The Septimus Heap series is published by Katherine Tegen Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Children’s Books.  Septimus Heap: Magyk was published in March 2005, followed by the second and third books, Septimus Heap: Flyte and Septimus Heap: Physik, which were published in March 2006 and March 2007 respectively.

Walden Media and Penguin Young Readers Group have teamed up to acquire the North American rights to Savvy, a novel by Ingrid Law, in an agreement with Daniel Lazar, Agent, Writers House.  Walden has also picked up the movie rights to book.  Scheduled to be published by Dial Books for Young Readers/Walden Media in May 2008, Savvy revolves around a girl who is about to turn 13 and find that she has unique powers.

MORE KIDS STUFF

PBS Kids Go! will launch WordGirl (26×30′), the new animated weekly series on Friday, September 7, 2007, with a sneak peak on Monday, September 3 (check local listings).  Targeted to K6-8, WordGirl follows the adventures of fifth grader Becky Bostford, who transforms into super hero, WordGirl, with a cape and all, when trouble demands it and uses her vocabulary to conquer the bad guys.  WordGirl will air Fridays on PBS Kids Go!  Additionally, a companion website at pbskidsgo.org/wordgirl will feature clips of the show in the Adventures of WordGirl area, which also features games and activities revolving around words. Created and produced by Soup2Nuts, the animation studio and unit of Scholastic, WordGirl initially began as a short-form series (20×2′ and 10×1′) and a website that launched on PBS Kids Go!

Microsoft signed a deal with Disney-ABC Domestic Television to distribute 35 top-shelf movies through the Xbox Live platform. Xbox 360 users will be able to rent titles from Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Miramax Films and Hollywood Pictures when they become available for the home video window. Xbox Live has quietly amassed more than 2,350 hours of major-label entertainment content, including movies and shows in HD. The platform’s 7 million members, who spend “points” to purchase content, have downloaded nearly 10 million titles to date according to the company.

Al Ovadia & Associates and Cartoon Consultants Group have been tapped by France’s PlanetNemo to rep its preschool-targeted animated series Bali (26×30′ or 52×11′) for distribution and licensing in the US across broadcast, home entertainment, motion pictures, licensing and merchandising, wireless, and internet VOD.  The series is based on the French kid’s book series by Magdalena and Laurent Richard, Bali animated series focuses on the little everyday traumas that kids go through.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Geffen Records is set to release the soundtrack to Lionsgate’s upcoming live-action movie Bratz on July 31, 2007.  In addition to groups like Black Eyed Peas, Ashlee Simpson and Lifehouse, the soundtrack introduces 12-year-old Daechelle singing her song Fearless, which is also featured in the movie.  Daechelle’s Fearless is currently available on iTunes.  The Bratz movie opens on August 3, 2007.

Mattel has entered into a licensing deal with Mighty Fine, a design studio and apparel manufacturer, to produce a new apparel line for juniors and adults under the Barbie brand, as well as play apparel line for infants and adults under the Fisher-Price brand.

  • Under the agreement Mighty Fine will produce a new collection of Barbie t-shirts, knit tops and fleece featuring classic Barbie images with a modern look.  Targeted to juniors, the new collection of fashion tops will be available from fall 2007 in boutiques, specialty stores and department stores nationwide.
  • The Barbie line will include three different collections in several styles under Mighty Fine’s three brand labels Mighty Fine, Public Library and Doe. Mighty Fine will unveil three Barbie styles in fall 2007, with Public Library adding seven Barbie styles in spring 2008 as well and Doe introducing five Barbie styles in fall 2007.
  • Additionally, Fisher-Price will partner with Mighty Fine under their Mighty Fine & Mini Fine brands to produce a new line of hip nostalgic t-shirts for adults and toddlers, as well as onesies, featuring classic Fisher-Price art.

Correction: Regarding the July 10 story on the new ad-supported area of Disney’s Toontown, the section is just an option for players.  Toontown still offers a monthly subscription of $9.95/month that includes an unlimited version of the game and expects the game will remain primarily subscription-based in terms of users.  Only the specific “free” areas of the game will be ad-supported (based on geography and functionality within the game.) We regret the error.

STONE SOUP

How much do tweens/teens use their cell phones during the summer?  The answer, according to the new Disney Mobile Cell and Tell survey of 1,579 mobile phone using Tweens/Teens 10-17, is that summertime usage among this group grows to 3-hours and 45-minutes a day, versus the 1+ hour per day for an average school day.  Conducted by Harris Interactive, the report also found that mobile phones are important enough to Tweens/Teens 10-17 that one third of those surveyed said they would give up listening to radio, playing video games, and shopping rather than give up their mobile phone.  One in five said they would give up TV.  Other findings include:

  • 65% of Tweens/Teens 10-17 report using phones during school hours
  • 58% of those surveyed that text message say they have texted during class
  • 44% of respondents use text messages as their primary form of communication
  • 52% say they text while at the movies and 28% at the dinner table
  • 26% report they check for text messages or send one less than ten minutes after waking up in the morning.
