Cynopsis: Kids!

07/10/09

Good morning. It’s Friday, July 10, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Following a flurry of reports on Thursday, Nickelodeon has issued a statement saying it is not in discussions to purchase the Six Flags park in New Orleans.  The park in question has been closed since Hurricane Katrina hit the area in 2005.  Six Flags Inc. flied or chapter 11 early last month.  Nickelodeon did say that it “has had speculative conversations with many cities, including the city of New Orleans, and companies like Southern Star Amusements, regarding licensing arrangements.”  That said, Nickelodeon has not made or signed any deals.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon UK unveils plans to launch a new tween/teen-targeted live-action series, Frankentwins (20×30) in 2010, per Broadcast Now.  Produced by RDF Media, Frankentwins (a working title) was created by Andy Watts (My Parents Are Aliens) and revolves around a family that moves to Transylvania.  Additionally, later this month the network plans to launch Teenick, a new in-house produced programming block that will air seven days a week 5-7p.  Aimed at tween girls, Teenick will be hosted by Olly Murray and will feature music acts, fashion and visits to UK events.

In other news, Nickelodeon UK has acquired Marvel Animation‘s new animated series The Super Hero Squad Show (26×30).  The action series will premiere in the UK on NickToons this October 2009.  The Super Hero Squad Show will feature stylized adaptations of Marvel characters inkling Captain America, Silver Surfer, Hulk, Wolverine and Iron Man and the evil Dr. Doom and his evildoing pals.  The series features the voices of Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Charlie Adler (Transformers 1 & 2), Steve Blum (Wolverine and the X-Men, Hulk Vs.) and Grey DeLisle (Fairly OddParents and The Replacements).  The series will also include special guest voiceovers such as Wayne Knight, LeVar Burton, Robert Englund and Stan Lee as the voice of the Mayor of Super Hero City.

Wizards of Waverly Place  Wizards vs. Vampires, a new four-episode programming event, debuts this month on Disney Channel beginning with the first episode on Friday, July 24, 8- 8:45p.  The remaining three half-hour episodes will bow on successive three Friday evenings at 8p.  The story arc revolves around the Russo family and what happens when a family of vampires opens a new competing sandwich shop.

Super Why and PBS Kids invites preschoolers to read this summer with Super Why Wonderrific Weeks on PBS Kids this August.  Throughout the month four new episodes of Super Why will debut, each showcasing a different superhero from the series and that character’s specific literacy skill.  Each character and their respective literacy skills will be underlined all week long, Alpha Pig (August 3-8), Princess Presto (August 10-14), Wonder Red (August 17-21), and Super Why (August 24-29).  Created and produced by Out of the Blue Enterprises, Super Why! is funded in part by a Ready To Learn grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the US Department of Education, in partnership with PBS.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Peppa Pig is set to go on a live tour in the UK under a deal between E1 Entertainment and Fiery Angel.  The stage show, Peppa Pig’s Party, will make stops at seven UK venues this fall, September 30 through November 1.  A full Peppa Pig’s Party UK tour including 60 venues will follow in 2010.  The tour will be supported with a marketing campaign that will focus both on grass roots publicity in the towns and cities where the show will visit and larger scale retail promotions.  Further information will be available at www.peppapiglive.com .

Animax Entertainment inks an agreement with Little Pim, producer of the toddler/preschool-targeted DVD series, Little Pim: Fun With Languages, to create and launch an interactive foreign language game for the iPhone.  Slated to launch this August, the first installment of the application will offer a series of learning activities in French and Spanish using vocabulary and animation from the Little Pim DVDs. Later installments of the app will feature additional languages.

Paul Frank Industries partners with Clek to create special edition booster seats featuring Paul Frank characters.  Two of Clek’s booster seat models with customizable and removable Clekjackets will feature Paul Frank’s Julius the Monkey and its skull and cross-bones character, Skurvy.  The Paul Frank special edition Clek booster seat models, Oobr and Olli, will retail for $299.99 and $99.99 respectively.
