Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, January 6, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Nickelodeon and the White House partner to encourage kids to support US military families through various avenues in a special episode of iCarly that features First Lady Michelle Obama, which will premiere on Monday, January 16 at 7:30p.  iCarly is a perfect choice for educating kids about supporting military families since the main character, Carly Shay, is the daughter of an Air Force Colonel serving overseas.  Just ahead of the iMeet the First Lady premiere, Nickelodeon will air a special dedication from the iCarly cast and Mrs. Obama to military families. Immediately following the premiere, the network will debut a PSA featuring ways kids can show their thanks and support.  For more information, visit  This month leading up to the debut of iCarly iMeet the First Lady, the network will host screenings for military families nationwide at four military bases.  On the multi-platform side, Nickelodeon will feature iMeet the First Lady highlights from the episode on and the special will also be available for purchase in HD via iTunes, Xbox, Vudu, Samsung, PlayStation and Amazon, beginning Tuesday, January 17.  Mrs. Obama’s guest star appearance on iCarly is also part of Joining Forces, an organization spearheaded by Mrs. Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, which supports and addresses the unique challenges and needs of military families

HarperCollins Publishers signs co-authors, acclaimed movie director/producer/writer Chris Columbus and noted young adult novelist Ned Vizzini, to a preemptive rights deal for a three-book middle-grade fantasy series, House of Secrets. This is Columbus’s debut series for young readers with the first book slated for global publication in spring 2013. The House of Secrets revolves around the Paget kids, who pretty much have it all, you know adoring parents, a big house, and all the newest video games… until… their dad loses his job due to “an inexplicable transgression.” The turn of events forces the family to move into Kristoff House, a century-old mysterious place built by a troubled fantasy writer with an interest in the occult… from there a journey ensues, including uncovering the Pagett family’s secret history and the battle to save their parents and even possibly the world.  The three-book North American deal was negotiated by Alessandra Balzer, Co-Publisher of the Balzer + Bray imprint at HarperCollins Children’s Books, with Dorian Karchmar at William Morris Endeavor. UK & Commonwealth rights were acquired by Rachel Denwood, Publishing Director from Cathryn Summerhayes at William Morris Endeavour. Rights have been sold in twelve foreign territories so far.


BBC Worldwide‘s preschool-targeted CBeebies channel has ordered a series of 40 short films based on eight classic kid’s stories.  BBC Worldwide has completed deals with kid’s publishers Ladybird Books and Barefoot Books for the eight fables, including Ladybird’s Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Magic Porridge Pot, Cinderella, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Elves and the Shoemaker, and Barefoot’s Shopping With Dad, The Gigantic Turnip and Emily’s Tiger. The stories will be read by CBeebies hosts in Africa, Asia, Australia, Latin America and Poland.  As well as on CBeebies’ international websites, in the Story Time area of the sites, the shorts will also appear on BBC Worldwide’s pay TV channels and associated on-demand services, and on the CBeebies channel on British Airways’ in-flight entertainment system. Additionally, the short films will be featured on the official CBeebies Facebook fan pages, and on ‘CBeebies On The Go’, the free app for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad available across the Asia Pacific market.  The stories will launch on the TV network from February 2012. Rollout has already begun on CBeebies’ digital platforms, with films currently available on the local websites in South Africa, Asia and Poland.


Lionsgate acquires the exclusive home entertainment distribution rights to MGA Entertainment‘s girl-targeted Lalaloopsy ( doll property. Under the deal, Lionsgate will serve as the exclusive distributor of Lalaloopsy product for all packaged media and digital platforms in several territories, including the US, Canada, and the UK. Lionsgate’s initial home entertainment movie title, Adventures in Lalaloopsy Land: The Search for Pillow, is set to release in March 2012.  Lionsgate and MGA have previously partnered on the Bratz home entertainment line.

Universal Partnership & Licensing (UP&L), Illumination Entertainment awards Thinkway Toys the global master toy licensee for the upcoming animated feature film Despicable Me 2, which is set to release in theaters July 3, 2013.  The movie is a follow-up to Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s 2010 movie Despicable Me. Thinkway Toys plans to develop a wide variety of toys featuring the popular Minions characters and other key characters including interactive toys, figures, plush, dolls, playsets, vehicles, role play and novelty items. Products are set to be available at retail in summer 2013. This coming summer 2012, Universal Orlando Resort in Florida will launch a 3D theme-park attraction based on Despicable Me.

Cartoon Network Enterprises expands its Asia Pacific licensing efforts to include Cartoon Network animated properties including The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time with Finn and Jake and Regular Show, adding to a portfolio that already features the Ben 10 and The Powerpuff Girls franchises.  Cartoon Network Properties plans to use these new proprieties to enhance licensing and merchandising opportunities for its partners in Asia, across consumer products, home entertainment, publishing, promotional licensing and themed entertainment. Additionally, Cartoon Network Enterprises plans to open more branded environments across Asia Pacific including family entertainment centers, themed zones and learning spaces. In Korea, Cartoon Network Enterprises and YBM Sisa, an English language education company, partnered to launch several Learning Tree preschool leadership playschools.  There are currently three centers already open in Korea, with plans for 12+ learning centers expected to open across the region by the end of 2012.

Nickelodeon Consumer Products (NCP) completes a number of consumer products deals for SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer across the Asia Pacific territories:

  • Japan: Through new deals with Jun, Gourmandies and Mac Style, SpongeBob SquarePants will launch across apparel, mobile phone covers and accessories, and candies respectively; NCP has collaborated with Japanese fashion brand Secret Base on a SpongeBob SquarePants inspired line, licensed through Grace; Other deals include those with Laundry (apparel including T-shirts, parkas) and Seconds (digital cameras with a built-in SpongeBob photo frame).
  • Philippines: Chibuzo International Corporation signs on to supply teen fashion accessory, soft rubber wristband Gummy watches based on both SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer, the deals run into the fall 2013; NCP inks a deal for SpongeBob SquarePants premiums with Starkson Packaging Company, which supplies J&J for bundled toy linked to purchases and the Mister Donut promotion offers SpongeBob SquarePants tote bags and tumbler linked to purchases.
  • Taiwan: Fuh Guann Plastics will launch SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Starfish character themed lanterns, featuring 3D sculpting and using the nursery line Twinkle Twinkle Little Star; Shin Dun Enterprise is launching heated pocketed cushions with a USB connection featuring SpongeBob and Patrick (thus letting consumers use their computers and warm their hands at the same time.
  • Thailand: Great Profit Telecom is working on SpongeBob SquarePants mobile phone accessories (mobile phone cases to fit multiple brands) – this deal offers the potential to export the accessories outside of Thailand to the Seouth East Asian markets; licensee Lee Rung Charoen will feature SpongeBob SquarePants bedding; City Toys will launch SpongeBob SquarePants toy products (water guns for Thailand’s National New Year celebration, Songkran) for mass market; Fancy Art will produce SpongeBob themed adult apparel; Nation Egmont signs on as Thailand’s SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer’s book licensee; Sien Hua Tai signs a deal for SpongeBob SquarePants umbrellas and raincoats and socks for kids; and Aera Sport will supply Dora the Explorer character footwear for kids.


Scholastic Media‘s animated series WordGirl and actress Jane Lynch (Glee) take on the power of words in a new way in a one-hour anti-bullying themed episode, The Rise of Miss Power, premiering February 20 on PBS Kids Go! (check local listings).  In the episode Miss Powers, an intergalactic visitor voiced by Lynch, comes to earth and promises to teach WordGirl everything she knows about crime fighting.  When things don’t go as planned WordGirl and Captain Huggy Face question whether Miss power is a super hero or a villain, particularly when she begins using mean words to hurt and bully people.  WordGirl gives Miss Power’s ugly approach a try, but when Miss Power goes too far, WordGirl takes a stand, but is it too late?  The Rise of Miss Power is part of PBS Kids’ on-going effort to provide anti-bullying programming and resources for parents and teachers. In addition to this special, PBS Kids will feature additional programming throughout the year on embracing differences and coping with bullies.

American Greeting Properties completes an agreement that will see the second season of Strawberry Shortcake’s Berry Bitty Adventures broadcast in Canada on both the English and French-language Disney Junior channels. Season two of Berry Bitty Adventures has just begun airing in English on Disney Junior, and it will broadcast on the French-language Disney Junior beginning February 2012.

The start of 2012 sees Nickelodeon’s kid-targeted Monkey Quest massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) and virtual world launch international with mobile release of Monkey Quest: Thunderbow, a new mobile arcade game style app for the iPhone and iPad.  An extension of the MMOG, players with an existing account will be able to play the mobile app using their existing MMO character and unlock exclusive weapons and gear to use on  Monkey Quest was created in partnership with Behaviour Interactive and Unity Technologies. Since its launch in April 2011, Monkey Quest has amassed 6+ million registered users, and had 4+ million unique visitors during November 2011 (Omniture).

Big Idea Entertainment plans to release its new DVD, VeggieTales: Robin Good and His Not-So-Merry Men, this spring, on March 3 and March 6, 2012 in Christian and general stores, respectively.  The new DVD title features music, including new Silly Song focusing on a theme selected via an online fan contest, as well as a hurt and forgiveness themed animated short, Lenny & the Lost Birthday.  Licensing and promotional partners for the DVD release include Chuck E. Cheese’s, featuring in-store video monitor clips, and FATZ Restaurants, which will offer kid meal activity books, stickers, cups and retail coupons. The DVD will be promoted during the VeggieTales Live! God Made You Special! tour, which launches February 26, 2012.  Beginning in March, Big Idea Entertainment will also host promotional events at multiple NHL and NBA games. Additionally, live events will be held nationwide at select theaters, retailers and churches.

Preschoolers will be able to dance and sing themselves crazy (straight to nap time) with the release of the new DVD Nickelodeon Favorites: Dance to the Music! on February 28, 2012.  Created by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment, Nickelodeon Favorites: Dance to the Music features songs and music videos from some of Nickelodeon’s most popular preschool series, including Bubble Guppies, Team Umizoomi, Dora the Explorer, Go, Diego, Go!, The Wonder Pets!, and Ni Hao, Kai-lan.

In the UK, Penguin Children’s Group appoints Richard Haines as Acquisitions Manager, Penguin Children’s Media and Entertainment division.  Haines is charged with seeking out up an-and-coming media brands to grow the Media and Entertainment publishing list in the UK.  He will also help grow Penguin Children’s existing brands such as Peppa Pig, LEGO, Moshi Monsters, Doctor Who and Club Penguin.  Haines will report to Publishing Director, Eric Huang.  Most recently, Haines toiled for five years with HarperCollins where he served in a variety of marketing, brand management and licensing acquisitions roles.
