MetroPCS customers will be able to watch live, local broadcast television on their mobile phones thanks to a deal between the wireless carrier and Mobile Content Venture (a group of major broadcast networks including NBC, FOX and Telemundo). The service will be available on all MetroPCS smartphones that come with a specialized Dyle Mobile TV app. At the outset, MVC expects to offer the mobile video service on more than 72 stations in 32 markets. However, this is just the beginning; “This collaboration allows Dyle to take the first step in realizing the broadcaster vision of live, local TV on every smartphone,” said Erik Moreno, co-GM of MVC and senior VP of corporate development at Fox Networks Group. Current plans are for the service to be free for MetroPCS subscribers in 2012, with a paid model arriving next year, reports Adweek. To that end, the MVC is considering three ways in which revenue can be generated from the offering: an ad-supported model, a subscription model; and a cable or mobile customer authentication model.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Showtime is coming to the Roku devices via a new, interactive app now available on the digital streaming service. In advance of the Sunday premieres of House of Lies (starring Don Cheadle) and returning series Shameless, Showtime will offer sample episodes, sneak previews and behind-the-scenes clips from both programs.

As the official sponsor of the Short Film Program at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, Yahoo! has put together a multifaceted strategy to become an online hub for the popular film event. During the Festival, Yahoo! will premiere select short films on Yahoo! Screen, where viewers will get the opportunity to vote for the inaugural Yahoo! Audience Award, which will be presented at the Festival on Jan., 28. In addition, omg! NOW, a daily web series on the company’s celebrity news site omg!, will provide behind-the-scenes coverage from the festival. Finally, both the Festival and the films at the Festival will receive branded coverage on Yahoo! web properties, including the company’s homepage and Yahoo! Movies site.

Yahoo! isn’t done; the company has teamed up with comedy website Funny Or Die to produce the “Yahoo! News Funny Or Die GOP Presidential Online Internet Cyber Debate,” a mock debate featuring actors playing GOP presidential candidates vying for both your vote and your ridicule. It will be available for viewing today at 8 am ET on Yahoo! News, as well as the recently launched Yahoo! Screen via the Yahoo! Comedy Channel. The mock debate is the latest feature in not only Yahoo!’s revamped election coverage, but online video content initiative. The new Yahoo! Comedy Channel will also feature a live, uninterrupted Bill Maher stand-up special; exclusive video shorts from prominent comedy writers; and other original programming.

A couple pieces of bad news for DVD-by-mail subscribers of Netflix: Warner Bros. has cut a new deal with Netflix (as well as Redbox and Blockbuster) that is going to extend the wait time, from 28 days to 56 days after the release date, before subscribers of each service can get access to the studio’s DVD releases, reports AllThingsD. In the second piece of unfortunate news, HBO has announced it is going to stop selling DVDs to Netflix at a discount, according to The New York Times.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Even though it launched two new games this past week, Zynga’s stock was hovering near its all-time low yesterday. When the social games giant went public last month, it sold 100 million shares at $10 each, in order to raise $1 billion. The very next day, the company’s stock fell to $8.75, which is its all-time low (as of yesterday, when shares were hanging around at $8.90). The news could be alarming as the company released a new Words With Friends off-shoot, Scramble With Friends, yesterday morning, following the launch of Hidden Chronicles for Facebook earlier this week.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Lionsgate has inked a deal with consumer entertainment products company MGA Entertainment, to purchase the home entertainment distribution rights for MGA toy property, Lalaloopsy. Per the agreement, Lionsgate will serve as the executive distributor of the Lalaloopsy brand for all packaged media and digital platforms in several markets, including the U.S., Canada and the U.K. The first feature film under the toy brand, Adventures in Lalaloopsy Land: The Search for Pillow, will be released in March.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

comScore reports that retail e-commerce spending during the November to December 2011 holiday season reached $37.2 billion, a 15% increase over last year and an all-time record. Ten individual shopping days during this past holiday season surpassed the $1 billion mark, with Cyber Monday standing tall at the top with $1.25 billion in spending. In comparison, only one day in 2010 reached the $1 billion mark in spending (last year’s Cyber Monday).

According to eMarketer, social networks are more influential in emerging markets. The report cites a recent Pew Research Center study that found social market penetration ranged from 56% to 86% of internet users in large, emerging markets such as Mexico and Indonesia. A separate study from F/Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi found that social network penetration in Brazil reached 93% of internet users in August, 2011. And it’s not just that a lot of web users in emerging markets are simply logging onto social networks; they are also looking to them for advice. The TNS Digital Life 2011 study referenced in the report revealed that internet users in Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC), as well as Indonesia and Mexico were more likely to consider social networks as good places to buy brands/products than users in developed markets such as the U.S., U.K., Germany or Canada.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Hearst Television has released the details of its upcoming Commitment 2012 project, which is the latest edition of a biannual election coverage program that began in 2000. Commitment 2012 will include what Hearst calls an “intensified” effort to deliver comprehensive local coverage of national and regional elections to the company’s 25 TV stations, their respective local websites and mobile sites. In addition, an election app will be launched in the spring of 2012 that will offer content and information, customizable by market, for voters looking to stay informed on-the-go.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Apple has hired Adobe executive Todd Teresi to be its new Vice President of iAd, reports Bloomberg Businessweek. Teresi has already assumed his role at Apple and will be in charge of leading the company’s iAd mobile advertising business. He will report to senior vice president Eddy Cue. The iAd service, which was launched in 2010, has struggled to make any headway in the mobile advertising market. Apple’s main competitor in the market, Google, offers a mobile ad service that is compatible with both iOS and Android phones.

Definition 6 has hired Maribeth Phillips as Executive Producer and John Sexton as Interactive Creative Director, both based out of the marketing agency’s New York City office. In her new role, Phillips will manage all of the projects within the branding and design group in collaboration with creative director, Bob English. Phillips will also be responsible for onboarding new clients, supervising all design projects and idea creation initiatives for new projects. Sexton, reporting directly to executive creative director John Harne, will work on all interactive projects including web, social media, mobile, live events and more. Definition 6’s client base includes HBO, Nickelodeon, USA Networks, Sesame Street, Cox Enterprises and truTV.

NBCUniversal has announced that Adam Stotsky will become General Manager of G4. At his new post, Stotsky will oversee all facets of the channel, including programming, development, production, marketing and press, as well as digital operations. His appointment is effective immediately and he will report to Bonnie Hammer, chairman, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and Cable Studios.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Outside of my newfound devotion to the web and mobile Spotify apps (seriously, barring a couple of issues here and there, I love it), my favorite music discovering website has to be SoundCloud. Search any artist, no matter how obscure they are, and the site will probably have some of their stuff. However, the really great thing about the site is that it is a haven for discovering remixes and playlists from an incredible network of DJs, from the famous to the still-trying-to-make-it. The site also has mobile apps for the iOS and Android, which provide a separate function of allowing you to record sounds, such as a voice, a “moment,” or original music in order to share it privately or publicly on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Foursquare.
