Cynopsis: DIGITAL
01/22/10

Good morning, it’s Friday, January 22, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

A little more than a week after Google declared war on Chinese censorship policies, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton unveiled a new policy that encourages foreign governments to act unilaterally to insure that citizens around the world have open access to the internet. Ms. Clinton promised that the U.S. would lead an international effort to combat censorship and cyberattacks, and urged American companies to rethink whether or not to do business with countries that limit free access to the net. She also said the State Department was reaching out to the private sector to help develop new technologies to allow citizens in other countries to circumvent politically motivated censorship by their governments.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Presumably in a move to try and compete with Apple‘s forthcoming tablet media device, Amazon announced plans to create its own app store later this year allowing third party developers to create applications for the 3G network-connected Kindle. Mirroring Apple’s split, user revenue will be split 70% to the developer and 30% to Amazon, minus delivery fees of $0.15 / MB. The company envisions game, music, video and travel applications being developed for the ebook reader, naming EA Mobile and Zagat guide publisher Handmark as interested parties. The Kindle Development Kit will be available for download in limited beta from next month.

The New York Times Co. confirmed plans that the newspaper will start charging visitors to access content on its category-leading website beginning in 2011. The Times Co. will adopt a metered system popularized by the Financial Times, meaning that visitors will be able to access a handful of articles for free each month before hitting the pay wall. The Times’ previous attempt at an online pay product, the $50/year “Times Select,” charged for access to some of its top columnists but failed to attract a critical mass of subscribers.

Liberal talk radio network Air America announced it filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, citing mounting debt and shrinking lines of credit.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Live broadcasting functionality, popularized by such sites as Ustream, Justin.tv and Stickam, is beginning cross over into the social networking arena. Social video start-up Vpype announced a public beta for its live broadcast Facebook app, Vpyep Broadcaster. The tool enables users to create scheduled or unscheduled interactive live shows, send video notes, store completed broadcasts with audience participation and share videos with friends and followers on Facebook.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

In a 5-4 ruling, the Supreme Court put an end to spending caps long limiting corporations from dumping huge money into campaigns to support or oppose candidates for President or Congress. President Obama immediately criticized the ruling, calling it a win for special interest groups including oil, Wall Street banks and health insurance companies.

In a sign that the worst may be over for the online ad space, Google reported its strongest revenue growth in 12 months and indicated that it would very much like to continue doing business in China. Search ad revenue rose 17% in the fourth quarter to $6.67 billion from a year earlier, up from only 7% uptick during Q3 2009 and tepid 3% growth during Q2 2009.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Fox.com has switched video technology providers, moving from Move Networks‘ adaptive bit-rate technology to Brightcove‘s newly revamped white label solution based on Adobe’s Flash, per NewTeeVee. Separately, ABC.com plans to switch from Move to Flash as a temporary measure, according to Videonuze. Move enjoyed a huge market advantage a couple of years ago pioneering adaptive bit rate streaming, which improves video streaming to the end user by compensating for variable download speeds and packet loss. Since then, subsequent versions of Microsoft’s Silverlight and Adobe’s Flash have adopted similar technologies.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

The proliferation of blogs, online newspapers and Twitter accounts is not helping to move the needle in terms of creation of original news content, according to a new study from Pew Research Center‘s Project for Excellence in Journalism. The report delved into the news echosystem of Baltimore (the setting for David Simon’s brilliant series The Wire) and found that eight out of ten stories studied simply repeated or repackaged previously published information. Of the stories that did break new news, 95% came from traditional sources and nearly half from newspapers. Yet local papers are also offering less than they once did – for all of 2009, for instance, the Sun produced 32% fewer stories on any subject than it did in 1999, and 73% fewer stories than in 1991.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Want to view the State of the Union Address? There’s an app for that. The White House announced the launch of a new live streaming app for the iPhone that will deliver live key speeches and press briefings as well as content from whitehouse.gov. Obama’s tech savvy team also plans to launch a new mobile website in the coming weeks, mobile.WhiteHouse.gov, optimized for any internet-enabled mobile device.

Nickelodeon announced the availability of new apps for the iPhone and iPod touch based on some of its most shows and sites including “iCarly: Sam’s Remote” and “Go, Diego, Go: Musical Missions,” The apps join the recently launched “SpongeBob Tickler”, “SpongeBob Jellyfish Jam” and AddictingGames “The World’s Hardest Game.” Nick’s says it has received more than 4.5 million downloads worldwide since the launch of its first iPhone app in February 2009.

Guy-targeted news and video site CraveOnline has developed an inventive site and Facebook app around Paramount’s Smokin’ Aces 2: Assassins’ Ball. Join with Assassins through a “Virtual Line Up” that grabs your photo from Facebook. A quick Q&A identifies your strengths then assigns you with a name and arms specialty. The Assassins Bracket pits players against each other in a tournament to decide the ultimate assassin. The winner gets a free trip to Chi-town.

Little Pim Word Bag, developed by Animax, is a new interactive word game app for the iPhone featuring “Little Pim” the panda. Cutesy artwork, music and sound effects are used to teach children 27 everyday vocabulary words in a second language –either French or Spanish. The company is also currently working with PBS to create the first foreign language teaching game for its subscription website, PBS Kidsplay.

8×8 Connect is a new point-and-click VoIP calling application for Facebook, allowing users to add a “Call Me” button to their home page to enables friends to call them without revealing their actual phone number.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Move Networks announced that Eddy W. Hartenstein and Solomon (“Sol”) Trujillo are joining the Company’s board of directors, effective immediately. Eddy was founding CEO/Chairman of DirecTV and currently serves as Publisher and CEO of the LA Times. Sol was previously President/CEO of US West and Australian telco giant Telstra.

Ad agency AKQA said it will expand its operations in Europe with a new office in Berlin. Guy Wieynk, AKQA’s European Managing Director, will be responsible for the launch of the Berlin office, the company’s third in Europe.

WeatherBug has upped Kelly Furlong to Director of Midwest Sales, based in Chicago. In addition, Brittiony Borges has joined the company’s West Coast team in Seattle as Senior Account Executive.

ContentBridge announced the addition of Silverwood Partners’ Ethan Jacks to its Board of Advisors.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Seesmic Look, for now only available for Windows XP, Vista and 7, is Twitter desktop app maker Seesmic’s latest crack at trying to legitimize the clubby world of Twitter for the mainstream. Replacing a boxy schematic-style interface, the new client application provides a much more visual flair allowing you to sort tweets by topic. So instead of trying to sift through a random stream of comments and retweets, you can impose a method to the madness by following tech news, entertainment-themed posts or even celebrity gossip sources from a curated selection of Twitterers. This may present an opportunity for media companies who want to aggregate their content with partners in a single channel; Kodak, Red Bull, CNN Money, SOTS, and Time will each launch a branded channel on Seesmic Look. It could also prove to be a handy tool for marketers. The Trending Topics section allows you to see what words or phrases are getting a lot of play during the past day or past week.
