Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, January 21, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Nickelodeon will give SpongeBob‘s Facebook friends, of which there are some 16 million, a gift next week when it premieres the first tale in its Legends of Bikini Bottom, an anthology of five new SpongeBob SquarePants stories.  The first new story, Trenchbillies, guest stars Amy Sedaris and debuts on Thursday, January 27 at 8p on the SpongeBob Facebook page.  The remaining four stories that make up Legends of Bikini Bottom will premiere on Nickelodeon the following day in an hour-long primetime TV special, Friday, January 28, at 8p.  This special will simulcast on Nick Mobile, and following the premier will be available via the network’s download-to-own partners.  Nick.com will feature clips from the special, as well as SpongeBob trivia, a Patchy the Pirate-themed message board, and games, including the new game of the week Legends of Bikini Bottom that features six mini games.  The first game is available now, and the remaining five will launch one a day from Monday-Friday, January 24-28.  To access the final game, fans will need to enter a code that will appear on-air during the hour-long special on Friday.  The entire Legends of Bikini Bottom, including all five stories, will air Saturday, January 29, 10-11:15a on Nickelodeon.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Hasbro Studios, the TV production/distribution arm of Hasbro, inks a four-year overall deal with writer/executive producer Jeff Kline to exclusively develop and produce kid-targeted animated TV programming.  Kline, who has developed, written and been a showrunner on a range of animated series (Jackie Chan Adventures, Men In Black: The Series, Dragon Tales, among others), is currently the executive producer of Transformers: Prime and G.I. Joe: Renegades, both of which can be seen in the US on The Hub, a joint venture between Hasbro and Discovery, as well as internationally on different broadcasters.  He previously served as SVP/Drama Development, Columbia Pictures Television.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The second season of Ludorum‘s CGI-animated preschool series, Chuggington, will premiere Monday, February 14, 2011 at 10:30a, which coincides with the launch of the new Disney Junior branded-programming block on Disney Channel.  The new season of Chuggington is comprised of 13×13 and will air weekdays at 6a and 10:30a, and weekends at 5:30a.

Coming a new book, it isAmulet Books, an imprint of Abrams, will publish the sequel to the popular book The Strange Case of Origami Yoda by Tom Angleberger.  The new book, Darth Paper Strikes Back: An Origami Yoda Book, is set for release in August 2011, with Lucasfilm’s permission of course.

Razor & Tie will release The Wiggles new album, Let’s Eat, at retail on February 1, 2011.  The title features a special guest appearance by country music star Keith Urban on the song England Swings.  You can hear the song here http://razorandtiepublicity.com/thewiggles/EnglandSwings-featKeithUrban.mp3 .  The Wiggles’ TV Show can be seen on Sprout.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Fisher Price, the master toy partner for Octonauts, will release a new line of toys based on Chorion‘s new preschool HD CGI animated series of the same name, in August 2011 for the UK.  The Fisher Price line will include a range of figures, vehicles, and playsets, with features including posable characters and color change creatures, interactive GUP vehicles that work in water or ground, and squirt water and chomp.  Based on the books by the design team, Meomi, Octonauts (50×11 and 1×22) is produced by Brown Bag Films and airs on CBeebies (UK).  Additionally, publishers that have signed on for complementary books include, Simon and Schuster releasing in spring and summer for the UK, and Hachette Jeunesse for France.

Thinkwell Group, a 10-year-old experiential design and development firm, signs on to help design and produce a behind the scenes look at the Harry Potter movies, which will be part of Warner Bros.‘ redevelopment of its newly acquired Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.  When completed, fans will be able to visit the studios and tour several of the original Harry Potter movie sets, where all eight movies were produced.  Visitors will also see costumes, creatures and props and other items from the Potter pictures.

The preschool property Penelope gets a new licensing partner in the UK.  4Kids Entertainment International, the licensing agent for Penelope, has signed a new apparel licensing deal with Paul Dennicci to produce a range of branded apparel for newborns up to small kids for the UK market.  The Penelope TV series (52 episodes, 2 Christmas specials) airs on CBeebies (UK).  Based on the Penelope book series created by Anne Gutman and Georg Hallensleben, the story revolves around the everyday adventures of Penelope, an unendingly curious three-year-old koala bear with a keen sense of humor, as she meets new challenges at school and home with friends and family.  Additionally, under an earlier deal with publisher Redan, Penelope has been appearing in two of its preschool magazines, ‘Fun to Learn Friends‘ and ‘Fun to Learn Favourites.

Hit Entertainment renews its agreement with Character Options, which will continue to serve as the UK master toy licensee based on the CG-animated preschool property, Fireman Sam.  Under the new multi-year licensing deal, Character Options will continue to manage all toy category rights for Fireman Sam, as well as launch new lines including playsets, vehicles, figurines, plush and role-play products.

J.P. Shields joins The Hub as Director/Communications & Publicity.  He will report to Mark J. Kern, SVP/Communications.  Shields will be responsible for program publicity efforts and social media initiatives based on the programming and help drive viewership, as well as raising the profile of The Hub via trade, business and consumer media.  Most recently Shields was an account manager in the NY office of Bender/Helper Impact.  He previously toiled for JS2 Communications, New Line Cinema, Twentieth Century Fox Television, and PMK.  The Hub is currently available in 61 million US cable and satellite households.  Congrats J.P.!
