Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, January 14, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Italy’s Mondo TV names US-based Showplace Television Syndication as the exclusive US sales representative for its FCC qualifying educational animated kids’ programming.  Showplace will debut the following Mondo TV-produced animated series at NATPE 2011:

  • Angel’s Friends – the series revolves around Raf, a very young angel who lives in a town in habited by angels with her best friends Urie and Dolce.  Following their graduation to become full guardian angels, the trip will head to Earth to protect the planet from guardian devils.  Angel’s Friends is a co-production between Mondo TV and Play Entertainment.
  • Puppy In My Pocket – This friendship-centric animated series is set in Pocketville, where lonely pets are placed with loving kids to care for them.  The program is a co-production between Mondo TV, Giochi Preziosi, and Meg Toys.
  • Virus Attack – this sci-fi animated series follows the adventures of a group of teens use their special powers to go up against alien viruses, which are actually aliens that are trying to take over Earth.  Virus Attack is a co-production between Mondo TV and SUK.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

DreamWorks Animation adds Frances McDormand to the voice cast of its upcoming animated feature Madagascar 3, which is currently slated for release on May 18, 2012, per THR.  McDormand will lend her voice to the animal control officer who, with her team, captures the animals.  The movie will also see the return of Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith, David Schwimmer and Ben Stiller as the voices of the main zoo animals.  Eric Darnell will direct Madagascar 3, he co-directed and wrote the first two Madagascar movies.  This time around Noah Baumbach is writing the script for the movie, which will be produced by Mireille Soria and Mark Swift.  The movie is expected to include a bunch of new characters, including an Italian sea lion, Russian tiger, and a Latina jaguar (the nationalities are tentative).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Target Entertainment inks a multi-territory broadcast TV deal with Nickelodeon for Chapman Entertainment’s preschool series Fifi and the Flowertots.  Under the deal Nickelodeon acquires season one of Fifi and the Flowertots (52×10) for broadcast across Europe (including Benelux, Scandinavia, Germany, Spain and Italy), the Middle East, Asia (including India), Africa, Latin America and New Zealand.  Target holds the international TV rights to the full Fifi and the Flowertots series (to date a total of 117×10 episodes).

This month marks Disney Channel South East Asia‘s launch of the kid-targeted animated series 1001 Nights ( www.1001nightsshow.com ), and will air twice daily on the channel (9a and 5:30p).  Big Bad Boo Studios produces 1001 Nights.  Disney Channel in South East Asia reaches 71+ million homes across India, Bangladesh, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives and Pakistan in Tamil, Urdu, English, Hindi and Telegu.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Kid’s author/illustrator Todd Parr teams up with Thumb Arcade, an app developer, to create and release a new app My Underwear for K2-8 at the iTunes App Store.  Featuring Parr’s artwork, My Underwear ($2.99) is comprised of four games in one, which revolve around the theme of underwear, which challenge their hand-eye coordination, memory, motor skills, and pattern recognition.  My Underwear works on all iOS devices running OS v3.2 or higher.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Joe D’Ambrosia joins Disney Junior as VP/Programming.  D’Ambrosia will oversee Disney Junior’s production and programming strategies and creative development of entertainment and educational TV properties.  He will report to Nancy Kanter, SVP/Disney Junior Worldwide. D’Ambrosia, who began his career at Nickelodeon, has developed, produced and written kid-targeted TV programming and family movies for Murray Hill 5 Productions, which he co-founded, Nickelodeon and Sony Pictures Family Entertainment.  Set to launch on February 14, 2011, Disney Junior is the newly rebranded preschool block (currently Playhouse Disney) in the US on Disney Channel, and free-to-air broadcast partners around the world.  In 2012 Disney Junior will also debut as a basic cable and satellite channel in the US.  Congrats Joe!

Imax Corporation names Ann Sommerlath as VP/Corporate Communications.   She will report directly to CEO, Richard L. Gelfond.  Prior to this, Sommerlath was SVP/Edelman Public Relations.  She previously served as SVP in the corporate and business-to-business communications at Fleishman-Hillard, and was MD at RF/Binder Partners, and was also Director of PR/communications at Lufthansa’s LSG Sky Chefs.  Sommerlath spent a decade as a financial journalist at Dow Jones Newswires, BridgeNews and the AP.

Target Entertainment builds its sales team with the addition of two new senior executives.

  • Imrun Islam is appointed Sr. Sales Executive responsible for Spain and Portugal, Eastern Mediterranean, Africa and Benelux.  Islam most recently served as a Sales executive with Steadfast International.  Previously, she was a Sales Executive at Fireworks International.
  • Kanwal Hayer is named Sr. Sales Executive.  He is responsible for sales of Target’s catalog in Russia and CIS, the Middle East, Israel and Asia.  Most recently, Hayer was a Sales Executive with Zodiak Entertainment.
