A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM WARNER BROS. DOMESTIC CABLE DISTRIBUTION
Q: What primetime show gets the CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Good morning. It’s Friday, January 13, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing. NPR has nailed the big fish — Ted Koppel will join NPR in June as a Senior News Analyst, contributing to its news programming on broadcast radio and on all new media platforms. He will provide analysis, commentary and perspective on NPR News national programming approximately 50 times a year, including the newsmagazines Morning Edition, All Things Considered and Day to Day. He will also serve as an analyst during breaking news and special events coverage. You’ll also hear his work at NPR.org as well as within the NPR podcasts. Ted is pretty busy these days — a gig with the folks at Discovery Communications, and new deal with The New York Times where he will write a column (first one runs on January 29). TCA UPDATES: The History Channel will premiere a new project in April called 10 Days That Unexpectedly Changed America. Each of the 10 films has been created by a different filmmaker and spotlights an event that changed America’s political, cultural or social landscape. Using a range of storytelling techniques including recreations and even animation as well as interviews, archival footage and historical artifacts, the series offers viewers a new perspective on well-known historical incidents while also shining a light on the tremendous impact of less frequently cited events. Bravo has given renewal deals to Blow Out (March 21st at 9p), Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List (October 2006), as well as prepping for all new episodes of Inside the Actors Studio (January 15 at 9p), and two new series coming in March – Real Housewives of Orange County (March 21 at 10p) and Top Chef (March 8 at 11p). All of that you knew (except probably the dates), but here’s a new show you didn’t know about: Work Out. Produced by Mentorn Prods., this docu-drama focuses on a high-end gym owner, her trainers and her clients. Bravo has ordered up six one hour eps. The show is expected to launch in third quarter this year. Bravo also announced its plans to launch a suite of branded broadband channels this year, beginning with TRIOtv.com and BrilliantButCancelled.com. Both will be 24/7 and advertiser supported. The suite of new channels will all reside within BravoTV.com, and will feature exclusive original content produced specifically for the site. TRIOtv.com launches this month, while the others will roll out throughout the year. HGTV will launch a new series under its called I Want That! umbrella – you know, all those gizmos, gadgets and goodies that just may you say I Want That! The new series, set to launch on I Want That! Wednesdays in March, is called I Want That! Baths. This show premieres on March 8 at 8p. Immediately following is I Want That! Kitchens at 830p. At 9p will be the original I Want That! series that takes an upclose and personal look at soon-to-be released and prototype gee-whiz products. On Sci Fi‘s development slate are a slew of new projects:
USA Network has ordered up two more seasons of Monk. If that’s not enough, USA will also have the right to strip the series, airing 5x week, beginning in 2008. By that time, with the most recent order for two more seasons, the show will have 93 episodes in the can. *MORE GOOD STUFF*Sundance Channel has ordered an original 8-part doc series called Nimrod Nation, all about the small town of Watersmeet, Michigan, and its residents’ obsession with its local basketball team, the Nimrods. Produced by Weiden + Kennedy Entertainment and FremantleMedia. Program change: A&E is moving its daytime series Flip This House to Mondays at 8pm. The series from Departure Films has been the networks #1 lifestyle series across all key demos in the daytime. MTV has re-signed Nick Cannon Presents Wild ‘N Out, and will premiere on February 2 at 10p. Immediately following at 1030p will be the premiere of a new comedy reality series called The Shop, set in the famous Mr. Rooney’s Barbershop in Queens NY, and produced by Mottola Entertainment. The Annual Media Battles of the Bands is coming around again, you know that night of rock and roll when media executives from NY-based cable networks and ad agencies kick off their high heels and whip off their ties, and become “musicians.” Thirteen years ago, this event raised $44k; last year it took in $336k, with the money being used for New York’s Citymeals-on-Wheels program. Over these last dozen years, this event has raised more than $2 million for the program, feeding more than 400,000 of New York’s homebound elderly. So with all that said, this year’s event will be held on March 8 at the BB King Blues Club & Grill — and guess what …. they’re looking for a few more great bands to join the lineup! One caveat — band members must all work within the cable industry or related agencies or technology provides. Come on! Show some spunk! Email Amalie Young at * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *USA Network has cast Mather Zickel in the lead role in Underfunded, a one-hour pilot from the writing team of David Breckman & Ross Abrash. The project had a cast-contingency restriction on it, and the casting of Zickel lifts that restriction. Underfunded is produced by NBC Universal Television Studio. NBC has ordered up a comedy pilot of Lipstick Jungle based on the book by Candace Bushnell. The story is about three NYC business women who will do whatever it takes to get ahead and stay ahead. ABC and Touchstone will team up for a new project with Bonnie Hunt who plays a woman recently divorced, who is a private detective. In a separate project, though also from Touchstone, ABC has picked up a primetime soap called Secrets of a Small Town which begins with one girl’s murder, and her sister’s disappearance. This project is from writer Chuck Pratt. Casting Call: Starz Entertainment will soon launch a new series called Looking for Starz from Revolution Studios. The object is to find a new star to cast in a speaking role in a theatrical film. The show will chronicle events from the audition phase straight thru to the final choice. Now, if you think you just have what it takes to win this kind of a competition, then you’ll wan to fill out an application – go to starz.com. You have until February 21. * EXECUTIVE MOVES *Rich Ambrose has been named VP/National Sales for Time Warner Cable Media Sales, based in the Washington DC office. Rich makes the move to Washington from the Time Warner’s Chicago National Sales office where he was National Sales Manager. Welcome back to the East Coast, Rich! SCI FI Channel has upped Nora O’Brien to VP/Original Programming, reporting to Mark Stern, EVP/Original Programming. Additionally, the channel made a number of key appointments within its public relations team: Sallie Schoneboom has been named SVP, while Bill Brennan has made the move from Bravo to SCI FI in the role of Vice President. Lana Kim has also been upped from Manager to Director. Chuck Saftler has been upped to EVP/FX Networks, where he will focus on acquired programming, scheduling and operations. * RATINGS *Broadcast Daytime Ratings Rankings – Women 18-49, week of January 2-8, 2006: Wednesday — A18-49 Analysis: ABC led on Wednesday night according to final numbers from Nielsen Media Research, earning a 5.8/15 A18-49, ahead of CBS 4.0/10, NBC 3.0/7, Fox 2.2/6, Univision 1.9/5, WB 1.3/3 and UPN .9/2.
