Britney Spears is apparently departing from FOX’s The X Factor after serving only one season as judge.  Nothing official has been stated by the network or series creator/EP  Simon Cowell.  Judge L.A. Reid also previously announced his exit so the series will have two judge seats to fill for season three.  The X Factor is produced by FremantleMedia North America and SYCOtv. 

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Tuning in on New Year’s Eve, ABC reports its annual broadcast of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Part 1 (1130p-1235a) attracted an average audience of 22.2 million total viewers and posted a 7.7/26 among A18-49, based on Live + Same Day National Program Ratings.  Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve Part 2 (109-207a) pulled in an average audience of 6.4 million total viewers and delivered a 2.5/12 with A18-49.

Animal Planet travels to the depths of the Earth’s seas and oceans in the new six-part wildlife series, Wild Deep premiering January 22 at 9p.  Wild Deep documents the wonders and beauty that exists in the oceans even marine life which resembles fantastical characters found on Nintendo or Pokemon.  The series is produced for Animal Planet by Best Film Co.

First out of the gate, US Hispanic network Estrella TV will showcase its Upfront presentation with an evening event in New York City on May 13 from 6-8p.  Programming on Estrella TV includes Mi Sueno es Bailar and Tengo Talento, Mucho Talento as well as the weekly news program En La Mira con Enrique Gratas and the nightly newscast Noticiero con Enrique Gratas. 

Starting next Monday evening at 8p the MLB Network introduces a new series Costas at the Movies, hosted by Bob Costas.  The series features half-hour episodes offering an in-depth look at a baseball-themed movie with interviews with the directors and actors which will be followed by the night’s featured film.  A new Costas at the Movies episode and a featured film will air each Monday from January 14 through February 11 at 8p.  The upcoming schedule includes Cobb on Monday; Bad News Bears on January 21; A League of Their Own on January 28; Eight Men Out on February 4; and The Natural on February 11.

DIY Network brings back a third season of The Vanilla Ice Project hosted by pop star-turned-home renovator, Rob Van Winkle, a.k.a. Vanilla Ice on January 27 at 10p.   The new 13-episode season will be preceded by a new one-hour special, Ice My House on January 20 at 11p. 

Later this month on January 29 at 9p, HISTORY bows a third season of the US version of Top Gear which is a co-production between the network and BBC Worldwide Productions.  The series is hosted by comedian Adam Ferrara, champion race car driver Tanner Foust and racing analyst Rutledge Wood. 

Food Network hosts and culinary experts Anne Burrell and Bobby Flay are up for a rematch when Worst Cooks in America debuts a fourth season on February 17 at 9p.  The new season watches as fourteen cooking-challenged contestants split into two teams, one led by Anne and the other by Bobby, are put through various challenges over seven episodes.  A $25,000 grand prize will be given to the winning contestant who has achieved the most culinary skills during the competition.  

Switching from the swimming pool to the world’s best golf courses, Michael Phelps, the most-decorated Olympian of all time will next try to improve his golf game on The Haney Project.  The fifth season of the series is set to premiere on Golf Channel February 25 at 9p.  Over eight weekly, one-hour episodes, fans will watch as Phelps works with celebrated golf coach Hank Haney in addition to being joined by famous friends, his longtime swim coach Bob Bowman and his mother Debbie Phelps.  The series will also be paired with interview series Feherty which also is premiering on February 25 at 10p.  

Programming Note:  Tonight IFC airs a sneak peek of its new original animated comedy series, Out There at 1030p directly after a new episode of Portlandia at 10p.  IFC will officially debut Out There with ten 30-minute episodes on February 22 at 1030p.

New daytime talk show Steve Harvey from NBCUniversal Domestic Television Distribution has been renewed in national syndication for a second season.  This news comes after host Steve Harvey was chosen by the 2013 People’s Choice Awards as Favorite New Talk Show Host.  The one-hour talk show is currently sold in 98% of the US including all of the NBC Owned Television stations.   Many markets are upgrading Steve Harvey since its debut and those include Detroit, Phoenix, Portland, OR, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Salt Lake City, Oklahoma City, Austin, Buffalo, Fresno, Fort Myers, Tucson, Honolulu, Des Moines, Madison, Tri Cities and Burlington among many others.  Furthermore, NBCUniversal is presently extending the show with stations nationwide for 2014-16.  Steve Harvey is produced by Endemol USA and the show is taped before a live studio audience at the HD NBC 5 studios in Chicago.  

Twentieth Television has cleared a revamped version of FOX’s long-running series Cops called Cops Reloaded in national syndication, reports B&C.  Cops Reloaded has been cleared in 80% of the country for a debut in fall 2013.  The show is sold in two-year deals to stations including CBS-owned WLNY/New York, KTXA/Dallas, WUPA/Atlanta, WBFS/Minneapolis and WPCW/Pittsburgh; Ellis-owned KDOC/Los Angeles; Weigel’s WCIU/Chicago; Tribune’s KCPQ-KZJO/Seattle and KTXL/Sacramento; in addition to stations owned by Sinclair, Gannett and Meredith.

TNT is moving forward with Save Our Business (wt), a business makeover series hosted by British entrepreneur and millionaire Peter Jones.  TNT ordered six episodes and plans on launching the series late this year.  In Save Our Business, Jones will travel across America on a mission using his expertise and even his own money to save small businesses in trouble.  Save Our Business is produced by A. Smith & Company with Arthur Smith, Kent Weed and Frank Sinton serving as EPs.  This news quickly follows TNT’s recently approved series Cold Justice (wt) which will premiere in summer 2013. 

~ INTERNATIONAL HAPPENINGS ~

Banijay International has made a deal with Ambra Multimedia for the local production of the original format Stars In Danger: High Diving.  The four-part Italian version will be produced for Mediaset and will air this year with the title Stasera Mi Tuffo (Tonight I’m Gonna Dive).  This marks the fifth license deal for Stars in Danger: High Diving with the others with V Canada, FOX in the US, Jiangsu Satellite Television China, TV2 Norway and TV3 in Sweden. 

Peace Point Rights inked a distribution partnership with PE Media Services, specializing in distribution of theatrical and television content in Latin America just ahead of NATPE.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis:  ABC was the overall winner Wednesday among A18-49 with a 2.7/7, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. At 8p, ABC’s comedies The Middle and The Neighbors did best at an average of 2.3/7 and Univision’s Por Ella Soy Eva was second at 2.0/6.  ABC held the lead through 9p with two more comedies, Modern Family and Suburgatory at an average of 3.7/10 followed by CBS’ People’s Choice Awards special at 2.8/7.  At 10p, the second hour of the People’s Choice Awards on CBS was #1 at 2.6/7 and NBC’s Chicago Fire pulled into second place at 2.2/6 and ABC’s Nashville was a close third at 2.1/6.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Effective January 2, 2013, Aman Gupta, CEO of Hobby Star Marketing Inc. is stepping down from his role as President and he has appointed Steve Menzie to replace him.  Steve has worked with Aman since 2008 in the role as Director/Corporate Partnerships and Exhibitor Sales for FanExpo Canada. 

Dana McClintock and Chris Ender were promoted to EVPs/Communications at CBS Corporation.  Dana and Chris will continue to work with EVP/Corporate Communications and CCO Gil Schwartz, to whom they both report. 

Zodiak Americas has formed a new US office for Zodiak Media’s Creativity & Innovation (C&I) Unit in Santa Monica and has named Stefanie Gelinas as SVP for the new division.  Stefanie will work in tandem with Natalka Znak, CEO Zodiak USA and will report directly to Jonny Slow, CEO, Zodiak Americas who is based in the US as well as Cathy Rogers, Director, C&I Unit based in London.  Stefanie will also recruit a new hire soon for the Santa Monica office.

Lifetime Networks elevated Kimberly Chessler to VP/Reality Programming and hired Paul Hardy as VP/Reality Programming.  Kimberly and Paul are both based in New York and in charge of developing and managing production of non-fiction projects for Lifetime.  They report to Gena McCarthy, SVP/Reality and Alternative Programming, Lifetime Networks.

Diana Lochridge takes on a new position at 99 Tigers, a branding and promotion company with offices in New York, Venice and Dallas.  Diana recently left her position as VP/Creative Services at truTV and helped to transform that network’s identity from Court TV.  At 99 Tigers, Diana will be working on various branding and promotion initiatives and also will manage a new division, 98 Monkeys as Creative Director
