Good morning. It’s Friday, January 11, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Best known as a publisher of horror, action, and sci-fi comic books and graphic novels, IDW Publishing is launching a kid’s division titled Jonas Publishing and imprint called Worthwhile Books. In launching the new imprint IDW has inked deals with Hollywood writers and producers to pen kid’s books, in addition to entering into a first-look agreement with UK kid’s publisher Meadowside Books. Worthwhile will be the exclusive US publisher of select Meadowside titles and will retain domestic film and TV rights to those properties. The first Meadowside title, of the 10 or-so books a year Worthwhile intends to publish, is Michael Recycle, by Ellie Bethel, about an environmental hero will be published in March.
Entara Ltd., a UK-based rights company, has taken on the Parthenon Entertainment Group name, effective immediately. All of Entara’s properties (e.g. Magic Roundabout, Domo, HABBO, Jackers! and Those Scurvy Rascals) will be managed by the Parthenon Entertainment Group. In November 2007, the private investment group Arkaga Fund, which owns Entara, acquired Parthenon Entertainment Ltd.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
John Bullivant, former Director/Programs, TV-Loonland and MD, Kickback Media, and Iain Russell, former Head/Productions, The London Studios and an ex MD, Fire Mountain Productions, have teamed to launch Fireback Entertainment Ltd. The UK-based indie company is currently in production on its first project, Captain Mack (52×11), a live-action and non-violent series for K4-6. Commissioned and funded by CITV, Captain Mack is inspired by the 1960s Batman TV series in which good triumphs evil. Fireback holds the international rights and is in final negotiations to secure a worldwide TV and video distributor.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Paramount and Nickelodeon Movies have shifted the release date to the adventure movie The Spiderwick Chronicles, which is rated PG, to February 14, 2008.
Cogeco Cable signs a VOD deal with Disney-ABC International Television. Under the deal Cogeco Cable will be able to offer its Canadian VOD customers a range of movies from Disney Pictures, Disney Animation, Pixar, Touchstone Pictures and Miramax to its customers in Canada. Cogeco also has VOD deals include with a number of other companies including Twentieth Century Fox, Warne Bros. International Television Distribution, Sony Pictures Television International, Universal Studios Television Distribution Canada, MGM Home Entertainment, among others.
Imira Entertainment (f/k/a Icon Animation) has inked a group of pre-NATPE broadcast and home video deals for Spanish-language channels and territories in the US and Latin America.
- Here in the US, Sorpresa picks up the Spanish-language rights to the K6-12 targeted animated series Lola & Virginia.
- Discovery Kids Latin America takes rights to Louie (39×26), which will launch in March 2008, with the home video rights going to En Pentalla for Mexico. Produced by Millimage, Louie is represented by Imira for all Spanish-speaking territories.
- Skyland (26×26), produced by Method Film and 9 Story has sold to Ecuadorian Free TV Channel Ecuavisa
- Beverly Hills Entertainment picking up TV and home video rights to the new animated film Christopher Coolumbus (1×70) for Latin America
In addition to the above properties, Imira will be at NATPE showcasing Bali (52×13), a preschool-aimed animated series co-produced by Planet Nemo Animation and Subsequence Entertainment. Imira holds the rights to Bali for Latin America, Spain, and Portugal.
US-based Cilantro Animation Studios, a developer/producer of Hispanic-targeted programming, is set to attend NATPE where it will showcase two new CGI TV series: La Carta (13×11), aimed at kids 13+, and Johnny the Roofer (13×11) for teens 16+.
MARKETING/LICENSING
New licensing partners sign on for the animated action series Eon Kid, which airs on Kids’ WB: C-Life Apparel (t-shirts and fashion tops); 3 Point Entertainment (trading cards and related game); Mad Dog Apparel (sleepwear, socks); Concept 1 (bags, hats, cold weather accessories). Produced by Daewon C&A Holdings Co., Design storm Co, BRB International and Starz Media’s Manga Entertainment, Eon Kid is distributed by Starz Media, which also coordinates coordinating licensing and merchandising for the show, working with licensing agent Al Ovadia & Assoc.
American Greetings Properties (AGP) is partnering with Ty’s Toy Box, an online retailer of licensed characters, to create the Care Bears online storefront. Similarly, last week AGP and Ty’s launched an online marketplace for the Holly Hobbie Property. In both cases Ty’s is working with the many licensees for each property to maintain the online store.
News out of the Hong Kong Toy Fair taking place this week: HIT Entertainment taps long-time licensee partner Funtastic Limited, the Australia-based toy company, to serve as the Australian distribution partner for Thomas & Friends Trackmaster. Under the agreement, Funtastic will oversee the property’s transition from the Thomas & Friends Motor Road and Rail track system to the new system called Trackmaster, which is set to launch in 2009. Funtastic will also continue to distribute the Tomy Thomas & Friends preschool products.
Max & Ruby, the animated bunny stars of Nelvana’s series of the same name, have a new book series. Published by Key Porter Books, the new Max & Ruby books are now available in Canada at Chapters/Indigo stores, along with Ty Beanie Babies of the characters.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Parthenon Entertainment Group appoints Caroline Mickler as a brand, licensing and merchandising consultant, to help the company build licensing opportunities for its kid-targeted TV properties. Noted for developing successful entertainment brand strategies, Mickler currently also represents The Beatles, and Novel Entertainment’s animated series Horrid Henry. Previously she was Managing Director, PolyGram Licensing and prior to that for Copyright Promotions International.
Sally Doherty is named Executive Editor, Books for Young Readers at Henry Holt. A veteran of the children’s publishing industry, Doherty has served as an Editor at Scholastic, Bantam, and HarperCollins, the latter where she was Editorial Director. Most recently, Doherty has worked as a freelance editor for HarperCollins, Hyperion and scholastic, and as a consultant for Chronicle, Disney and the Charlotte Sheedy Literary Agency, as well as a writer for SmartInk.
