~ Valentine’s Programming: Special Report & Program Listings ~

It’s that time of year again when networks large and small plan their Valentine’s Day programming, airing as early as a week ahead of time.  Hallmark Channel, making good use of its moniker “The Heart of TV” has a full lineup of romantic-themed original movies airing this weekend and again on Valentine’s night.  “It makes sense for us to go the extra mile to celebrate the (Valentine) holiday with a full schedule of movies which resonates with our core audience of women 25-54,” says Michelle Vicary, EVP/Programming at Crown Media Family Networks, parent company of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel.

For a different sensory experience, Music Choice offers both romantic and edgy moods via music videos for the holiday on its channels including MC Video On Demand, MC Music Channels and SWRV.  “Valentine’s Day fits perfectly into our curation strategy. It provides our programmers the opportunity to create compelling block programming that highlights great videos and songs around a universal theme  love,” says Damon Williams, VP/Programming and Content Development at Music Choice.  MC Video On Demand has a “Forbidden Love Playlist” of videos on tap depicting tragic love stories while the MC Music Channel spotlights more happy love-themed videos as well as a Latin Amor category.

Logo is taking the anti-Valentine’s tack with a prime time block on the 14th called “Logo’s Bloody Valentine’s Thursday,” says Marc Leonard, Logo TV’s Senior Vice President of Multiplatform Programming. The reason? “Romantic movies have not done fantastically well for us,” says Leonard. “Our audience likes fun and entertainment.” Hence their decision to run Idle Hands and then a three-hour presentation of Interview with a Vampire, which earned a .16 rating on the fledgling network the last time it ran. “It’s one of the five highest-rated movies of all time for us,” Leonard says.

“There’s a small ad base that looks for relevant environments like Valentine’s Day,” commented Donna Speciale, President of Turner Entertainment and Animation Ad Sales. “And this year, Valentine’s Day rolls into President’s Day, so that whole weekend becomes a big retail opportunity… it’s perfect for the Walmarts, Kohl’s, and the JC Pennys of the world. It’s a good platform for ad sales.” TBS plans to run a funny Valentine’s Day Friends marathon.
