Cynopsis: Kids!

02/29/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 29, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Time Warner Inc., announced its movie studio New Line Cinema would become a unit under the Warner Brothers studio banner.  While New Line will maintain separate development, production, marketing, distribution and business affairs operations, these efforts will be closely integrated and coordinated with Warner Bros. to capitalize on film performance and operating efficiencies, achieve significant cost savings, and improve margins.  The company says the move will allow New Line to more fully reap the benefits of its movies by, for example, by affording it the opportunity to retain international film rights and exploit them through Warner Bros. global distribution.  New Line’s Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne have elected to leave the studio, but are in discussions about possible future business relationships with the company.

Correction: Contrary to what was reported here yesterday; TV-Loonland AG has given notice to 9 members of its 15-person Munich office.  The move is part of TV-Loonland’s continuing restructuring efforts.  I regret the error and its subsequent effects.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Young actor Freddie Highmore will lend his voice to Astro Boy, the lead in Imagi Studios’ CG animated feature film of the same name.  Directed by David Bowers (Flushed Away), the Astro Boy movie will be released by Warner Bros. and The Weinstein Co. in 2009.  The movie is based on the manga character, Astro Boy, created by Osamu Tezuka in 1952.  The original Astro Boy anime series debuted in Japan in 1963, followed by its premiere in the US on NBC, subsequent animated Astro Boy series bowed in the 1980s and 2003.

The BBC’s preschool-targeted multiplatform CBeebies has commissioned Way To Blue (working title) (100×20) a new mixed live-action/animated preschool series from The Foundation, a unit of the RDF Media Group.  Focused on young kids and their emotions, Working To Blue takes viewers to Nara, a live-action world inhabited by animated characters, each reflecting a unique emotion.  Based on an original idea by Dan Good, who serves as a creative consultant on the series, Working To Blue is slated to bow on CBeebies from 2009.  RDF Kids & Family holds the worldwide rights across all media to the property and will distribute the series.

Precious Moments partners with Sabella Dern Entertainment to produce a series of Precious Girls Club g-rated movies, which will be introduced in select theaters in 2009 through Kidtoon Films.  Aimed at Girls 4-8, The Precious Girls Club concept is designed to offer a comfortable place where “girls can stay young” for a bit longer and will revolve around “good values.”

At the end of the four weeks, the team that wins the most weeks wins Run! The most winning team will be announced both online and on CBBC’s Sportsround, Saturday, March 29.

The New York International Children’s Film Festival (NYICFF) begins today in NYC, with the US premiere of the Australian mockumentary Razzle Dazzle: A Journey Into Dance by Darren Ashton.  The festival, which runs over the course of three weekends through March 16, will present some 100 films from 25 countries and includes pictures for kids, tweens and teens 3-18.  Additionally, beginning today, kids are invited to take part in the NYICFF’s first online film festival, where kids can view and vote on films, as well as review them, and talk to filmmakers via www.gkids.tv ).  Over the last year the festival has taken its act on the road with its first national tour, showcasing the best of the NYICFF, which ran July 2007-January 2oo8 and will now continue through April 2008.  Festival information, including target ages for each movie featured, can be found at www.gkids.com .
