Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 25, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Disney acquires Togetherville ( www.togetherville.com ), an online social network targeted to kid 10 and younger, per TechCrunch.  Terms of the deal were not disclosed.  Launched in October 2010, Togetherville promises a safe and secure experience, such as allowing parents to monitor what their kids are doing on the site, including parents approving each connection (“friend”) their kid makes as they create their own “neighborhoods”.  Parents have to be members of Facebook in order sign up their kids for a Togetherville account.  According to the report, in addition to building neighborhoods via Facebook friends, kids can also do so via School Communities, which does not require that their parents and friends’ parents be connected through Facebook.

Viacom International Media Networks enters into a deal with Street Surfing to serve as the pan European sponsor of the Nickelodeon 2011 Kids’ Choice Awards (KCA), which airs on April 2, 2011.  The multi-platform deal will feature street Surfing’s new Wave Scooter in promotion for the KCA.  The sponsorship also includes an online competition for chance for the winner and their family to attend the KCAs.  Nickelodeon in Canada will air the 2011 KCAs live and special localized versions of the show, featuring region-specific categories/winners, will air in select markets across Europe.  Fans around the world will be able to vote online to decide on the winners.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Sid The Science Kid celebrates Earth Day with four new episodes that will premiere April 18-21 on PBS Kids (Check local listings for times).  The four new episodes explore different environment related themes including: what happens to water when it goes down the drain; why does Sid’s Dad wear a mask when he paints; where does trash go; and can an tree stump be a place for small creates to live?  From The Jim Henson Company and KCET/LA, Sid The Science Kid is an animated preschool series that encourages kids to explore and experience science.  The curriculum-based series also offers support resources for teachers ( www.pbsteachers.org ), parents and caregivers ( www.pbsparents.org ) and at the parent and teacher blogs ( www.pbs.org/parents/sid/blogs.html ).  Earth Day is celebrated annually on April 22.

MTV Networks International will showcase the new Nick Jr CGI animated series Bubble Guppies at MIP TV this April 4-7, 2011.  Set in an 3D underwater classroom, the interactive preschool variety show was created by Robert Scull and Jonny Belt (The Backyardigans).  The series debuted on Nickelodeon US as biggest preschool series premiere in three years.  Bubble Guppies (season 1) has already been acquired by France Television, Singapore’s Mediacorp’s kids’ channel OKTO and by Malaysian agency Juita Viden on behalf of NTV7.

Entertainment One (eOne) launches the refreshed Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom ( www.littlekingdom.co.uk ) website, featuring a new look and enhanced content, this weekend.  Developed by Bionic Communications, the site will now feature unique animation and web cam based activities in addition to a selection of themed games, clips, and an online shop selling licensed merchandise.

Correction: Nickelodeon’s new original TV movie Best Player, starring Jerry Trainor and Jennette McCurdy, will premiere on Saturday, March 12, 8-10p, and not the date listed here yesterday.

MARKETING/LICENSING

HIT Entertainment names Learning Curve as the German toy licensee for the preschool property Fireman Sam.  Under the new multi-year deal for the brand, Learning Curve will distribute Fireman Sam products from UK master toy partner, Character Options.  This new deal expands on HIT’s relationship with Learning Curve, which continues to represent HIT’s Thomas & Friends and Bob the Builder in Germany.  The CTM agency currently represents Fireman Sam in Germany on behalf of HIT.

Nickelodeon Consumer Products International inks a SpongeBob SquarePants licensing deal in Brazil with Globaal Shoes.  Set to be available for fall/winter 2011/12, Globaal’s new SpongeBob sneaker lines are inspired by music and urban culture with a retro twist (1950s and 60s).  Globaal is promoting the shoe collections via its Facebook pages at Globaal Shoes Brasil.

BabyTV grows its publishing program with new licensing deals in Portugal and Canada.

  • Portuguese publisher Porto Editora will produce books in a range of formats, including storybooks, activity books and shaped books based on BabyTV’s characters and properties. Titles will begin releasing second quarter 2011.  BabyTV’s Portuguese licensing agent, Popcorn, crafted the deal.
  • Smart Kids Canada, BabyTV’s Canadian publishing partner, will launch a line of interactive early learning books in fourth quarter 2011.  The new titles features a battery operated 24-page interactive book with piano keyboard and number and color-coded musical notes.
