As expected, American Idol is finally joining the 21st Century by allowing electronic ballots to be cast on AmericanIdol.com beginning with next Tuesday’s telecast on Fox. Fans will be required to log in using their Facebook accounts, which will act as a security mechanism to verify the identities of each voter. Each viewer who logs in through Facebook will be allowed to vote up to 50 times during the weekly window after the broadcast. Fox will also continue to accept votes through toll-free phone numbers and text messages (available for AT&T customers only.)
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Disney has acquired carefully monitored kids’ social network Togetherville for an undisclosed sum, as first reported by TechCrunch. The ad-free site, which officially launched in May of 2010, mirrors and works in tandem with Facebook – enabling parents to populate their children’s “online neighborhood” with friends and acquaintances they approve of and kids to create a profile, play games, watch videos, create artwork and send and receive virtual gifts.

“The House of Six Doors” from Seas Inc. is the first book printed to include digital watermarking technology dubbed CLIC2C, used in print campaigns throughout Europe. The technology allows readers to access multimedia content related to page they’re on with the use of a smartphone.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Seattle-based interactive video advertising provider Mixpo introduced a new expandable video ad unit that enables agencies and brand marketers to easily add content to their ads including graphics, text, video, and widgets. The units can also integrate real-time feeds, social media and sharing tools and interactive elements such as coupons.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was ordered to be extradited to Sweden in a British court yesterday for allegations of rape and assault. He has 7 days to appeal the ruling.
 
Comcast’s white-label digital video management firm thePlatform announced a multi-year deal to power the multiplatform roll out of Australian telco Telstra‘s cloud-based BigPond video service. The IP-based BigPond will provide movies, TV shows and sports to viewers via set-top boxes, connected TV and Blu-ray players from CE manufacturers including Samsung and LG. thePlatform had been powering on-demand video for the BigPond online portal.
 
Display advertising technology firm Collective has acquired Bellevue, WA-based Oggifinogi for an undisclosed sum. Oggifinogi produces advanced interactive ad units within both the banner and pre-roll space and serves more than 100 clients including NBC, Sony, Paramount and Best Buy.

Facebook reached another important milestone at the end of last year, reaching more than half of all internet users in the U.S. at least once a month and nearly 90% of social networking users, according to eMarketer. By comparison, Twitter is still more of a niche service, attracting less than 10% of online users.

Apple
released its first new MacBook Pro models in more than a year, featuring faster dual-core i5 and quad-core i7 Intel processors, Facetime HD video chat and a new high-speed connection technology from Intel dubbed Thunderbolt. (How about a cross marketing campaign with the new Thor movie?) Thunderbolt transfers data to peripherals at a rate of 10 gigabytes/second – meaning that transferring a CD would take less than a second.
 
CNN
has launched an app for devices built on Android’s Honeycomb tablet platform such as the just released Motorola Xoom – the first tablet to ship with Android 3.0. It is the first app to provide a direct gateway into CNN’s iReport citizen journalist interface, allowing users to instantly upload photos and videos through the Xoom’s front and rear cameras. The app displays the latest iReport “assignments” and asks users to rate what they see.

AOL announced some major management changes to accommodate the arrival of Arianna Huffington as President and Editor-in-Chief of content, under the renamed entity Huffington Post Media Group.

  • David Eun is exiting as President of AOL Media
  • Jon Brod, currently President, AOL Ventures, will add the title of COO of the Huff Po Media Group, reporting directly to Arianna
  • Ned Brody will now be charged with overseeing all network B2B offerings including Ad.com, ADTECH, 5Min, Pictela, Seed, and StudioNow
  • Artie Minson has been named Chief Financial & Administrative Officer of Paid Services, also overseeing human resources, corporate communications, brand marketing, etc.

 
MediaLink Chairman/CEO Michael Kassan has joined the Advisory Board of custom ad solutions provider and content syndication platform Mochila.
 
New York-based cinema advertising company Screenvision tapped Kevin J. Neary to serve as the company’s Chief Financial Officer. He formerly served as SVP and CFO for Ziff Davis Enterprise.
 
Opera Solutions hired former IBM Deputy CTO of Cyber Security Herb Kelsey to the company’s analytics leadership group as VP, Analytics. Herb will lead Opera’s projects in cyber security and intelligence analysis.

Software as a Service online micropayment fundraising site Fundly, which has helped non-profits and political campaigns raise over $200 million to date, unveiled a new Facebook fundraising app, which is helping to bring the power of social networking to the fundraising space. The app, already being utilized by the American Red Cross and Communities in Schools, enables groups to recruit supporters, post thank you messages on their supporters’ walls and process micropayments using the Facebook Payments platform. The biggest challenge for non-profits is to grow the size of their supporter base and a social networking strategy has got to be at the center of this in this day and age.
