Good morning. It’s Friday, February 24, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Noddy rights-holder Chorion Plc has accepted an acquisition bid from 3i, a private equity firm, for $193 million.  3i made its offer through its newly formed Planet Acquisitions Limited.  Under the deal Planet Acquisitions has agreed to acquire all of the Chorion Shares held by the management team.  

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Production has begun in India on Galli Galli Sim Sim, a localized version of Sesame Street, which is set to launch later this year on Cartoon Network India and POGO.  Among the characters featured on the series are a group of human actors, who represent different regions and religions within India, including:  Jugaadu, a creative problem solver who doesn’t view his disability as a handicap; Basha Bhaijaan, a store owner who speaks several Indian languages; his wife, Dawa Di, a dance teacher who hails from North East India and their son Kabir (8 yrs); retired army Col. Albert Pinto, who advocates healthy living and community involvement, and his wife, Rukmini (Doctor Aunty).  The human characters join the Muppets, including the previously announced four new Muppet characters created specifically for this production: Chamki, Aanchoo, Googly and Boombah.  Galli Galli Sim Sim is produced by Sesame Workshop, Turner India, and Miditech, an independent Asian production company.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon will explore what it is like to be an American kid living in a foreign country when it debuts Nick News with Linda Ellerbee: Strangers in a Strange Land, on March 19, at 8:30p.  The show highlights the experiences of three American kids living in Japan.

ReelTime Rentals, Inc. has inked a deal with MSP, Incorporated to license content from The Mike Sherman Show for worldwide digital distribution.  The Miami-based series features music videos mixed with artist interviews conducted by Hip-Hop and R&B TV host Mike Sherman.  Sherman says his goal is support youth-oriented family entertainment with the series.  In addition to being available on ReelTime’s Network, the syndicated music show can be seen on UPN 33, America One, MavTV and Colours TV in the US and on OBE throughout Europe, reaching 75+ million HH worldwide beginning in March 2006. MARKETING/LICENSING

Midway Games Inc. has entered into a multi-year deal with Double Fusion to provide in-game advertising exclusively to select, upcoming Midway titles.  Midway and Double Fusion will work together to integrate ad-campaigns into multiple next generation titles, including Stranglehold developed in collaboration with John Woo, and other products currently in development. Under this agreement, the Midway titles will incorporate Double Fusion’s technology to serve advertising campaigns which will be sold by Double Fusion’s sales team.

Six Flags has appointed MindShare as its media-buying agency for its 30 parks nationwide.  MindShare will implement an overall media strategy that includes the celebration of Six Flags’ 45th Anniversary.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Paul Condolora has been upped to SVP/GM, Cartoon Network New Media.  Condolora’s expanded responsibilities includes developing new Cartoon Network and Adult Swim-branded products and services for broadband, VOD, wireless and interactive TV etc.  He will continue to work closely on sales and marketing strategies with Turner Network Sales New Media division.  Condolora will also maintain his oversight of creative development and day-to-day operations for CartoonNetwork.com, AdultSwim.com, CartoonNetworkYA.com, and TickleU.com.  Condolora was previously VP/GM for the New Media group and will continue to report to Mark Norman, SVP/Business Operations, Cartoon Network US and Boomerang.

Sarah McIlroy has been named Director/In-game Advertising and Promotions, Midway Amusement Games, LLC.  She will report to Steve Allison, Chief Marketing Officer.  McIlroy be responsible for developing relationships with advertisers and will manage the process for placement of static and in-game ads.  McIlroy was previously with Atari for 12+ years.

RATINGS

Last week Cartoon Network saw a ratings boost in K2-11:

  • Primetime K2-11 averaged a 2.5 rating, up 15% vs. prior four weeks.
  • In Total Day averages, K2-11 delivered a 1.8 rating, an increase of +17% over the previous four weeks.

Disney Channel’s original movie High School Musical aired for a sixth time on Monday, February 13, at 8p earning a 8.8 rating among K6-11, making it the number one show on basic cable for the week.

Last Monday, President’s Day, Nickelodeon delivered strong ratings for K2-5 and with K2-11:

  • During a three hour Go, Diego, Go marathon, the 10am episode earned a 11.0 K2-5 rating, that series highest rated episode ever.
  • Later that night the premiere of the SpongeBob SquarePants Lost In Time special at 8p, earned a 16.1 rating among K2-11 with 5.2 million viewers, making it both the highest rated episode of SpongeBob ever, and second only to the Super Bowl in the K2-11 demo for the year.
