Cynopsis: DIGITAL
02.22.13

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 22, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

More than 179.5 million Americans watched nearly 36.2 billion online videos in January 2013, according to comScore.

Key Findings:

  • Google/YouTube stood at the top of comScore’s rankings, capturing 150 million unique viewers in January. Following that behemoth were Facebook.com (57 million unique viewers), VEVO (50.1 million), NDN (49.1 million), and Yahoo sites (43.7 million).
  • For monthly video views, Google/YouTube was king once again with more than 12.3 billion total views, followed by AOL with 766.5 million. Among the top ten ranked by unique viewers, Google/YouTube won out at 391.2 minutes per viewer, followed by NDN (72.1 minutes), AOL (63.1 minutes), and Yahoo (56.6 minutes).
  • Americans watched 9.1 billion video ads in January 2013. The top five properties: Google (1.82 billion views); BrightRoll (1.54 billion); Hulu (1.37 billion), Adap.tv (1.13 billion), and Liverail (0.96 billion). comScore reports that video ads reached more than 50% of the total US population an average of 58 times during January. Hulu delivered the highest frequency of video ads with an average of 56.9 ads per viewer.
~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Nickelodeon has launched the Nick App for the iPad. Featuring a swipe-able, tile-based visual layout, the ad-supported app offers kids access to more than 1,000 pieces of Nickelodeon content, including original short-form videos, behind-the-scenes clips and photos featuring Nick stars and animated characters, and various polls and games. The app also features On the Road with BTR, an original docu-reality series and Nick Studio 10, a daily afternoon show in which four kids challenge each other to make funny content. Nick Studio 10 will air on Nickelodeon beginning this spring. The app also offers full-length episodes of current Nick shows, though that requires authentication through participating TV providers. Available for free in the US, the app will also roll out to additional devices in the coming months.

Turner Sports, in partnership with the NCAA and CBS Sports, will live stream all 67 games from next month’s March Madness tournament, allowing fans to watch them online and on iOS and Android devices. Full access will require fans to authenticate their TV subscription. Those who don’t have the necessary credentials will still be able to stream all CBS-broadcasted games for free on as well as use the preview option to watch up to four hours of live streaming coverage.

Digital download service Digiboo’s interactive kiosks are now available in Boise Airport terminals. The kiosks offer (literally) on-the-go consumers access to more than 800 movies and TV shows, including recent theatrical releases like Looper and The Amazing Spider-Man and popular current TV fare like Revolution, Big Bang Theory, and Mad Men. The kiosks allow consumers to download the titles to USB drives as well as directly to iOS, Android, or Windows device via a Wi-Fi connection.

Billboard and Nielsen will now factor YouTube video viewing data into determining which songs make it into the Billboard Hot 100 weekly charts. The new measurement methodology will encompass official music videos, including those available on YouTube through VEVO, as well as user-generated clips that utilize authorized audio, according to Billboard. This will affect the main Billboard Hot 100 rankings as well as the publisher’s genre-based charts.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Nielsen plans to introduce an expanded TV ratings system that measures video viewing on set-top boxes, gaming consoles, and other connected devices that deliver video from streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Instant Video, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Initially, this new system will also incorporate video consumption on iPads and other tablets inside the home. However, Nielsen has plans for a “second phase” of improvements that will more comprehensively measure tablet viewing. Look for the overhauled ratings system by the start of the 2013 fall TV season.

Flurry has added Crash Analytics and User Acquisition Analytics to its Flurry Analytics mobile app advertising and measurement service. Both tools use a single SDK and are available to all Flurry customers for free. Crash Analytics enables developers to diagnose why their mobile app crashed in order to improve future user experiences. It’s currently available in beta for Android developers, with an iOS version coming later this month. User Acquisition Analytics enables app marketers to track the success of their campaigns across different marketing channels, including CPC and CPI display networks, as well as their own email and CRM campaigns.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Samsung and Apple weren’t only the top smartphone vendors, but also the top “smart connected device” vendors in 2012, according to new data released by the International Data Corporation(IDC).

  • Samsung shipped 250 million smart connected devices (desktop and portable PCs, smartphones, tablets) in 2012, up a staggering 119.3% from the 114 million devices it shipped in 2011.
  • Second-place Apple shipped 218.7 million smart connected devices in 2012, up 44.3% from the 151.5 million devices it shipped in 2011.
  • Overall, IDC says 1.2 billion smart connected devices were shipped in 2012, most of which were smartphones (722.4 million shipments in 2012). Tablets are growing fast though, increasing its market share 78.4% from 2011 to 2012, when 128.3 million units were shipped.

~ THE DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY ~

Well, the Academy Awards are this Sunday night. If you’re an awards show junkie like I am, here are a couple of cool things to check out in advance of and during the telecast:

The Oscars App: It features info on all nominees, movie trailers, exclusive videos, and photos, as well as “hosted specials” covering fashion and the nominated films and actors. On Sunday, the app will offer access to over a dozen live streams of the red carpet and the backstage area. A “Direct Mode” feature will allow users to control which of the cameras they want to view. Also cool: the Live and Loud Celebration, from BiteSize TV.

The Google Oscars Page: It’s also got an incredible amount of data and videos covering all of the nominees. The user interface is what strikes my fancy, though the ability to host a Google+ Hangout during the show isn’t a bad idea, either.
