Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 1, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Iron Man meets the grid iron on Super Bowl Sunday, when the Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment ad for the Iron Man feature film airs during the Super Bowl, around 7:30p.  Marvel.com will tease the spot on February 1, and then following its TV debut during the big game the ad will then be available on www.apple.com , www.marvel.com , and the official movie website.  On Monday, February 4, sites including Yahoo Sports! and ESPN.com, will also carry the ad.  Iron Man will be released nationwide May 2, 2008.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Nickelodeon UK has given the green light for Poppy Cat (52×11), a new preschool animated series from Coolabi Productions for the Nick Jr. channel.  Slated to air in late 2009, Poppy Cat will employ a style of animation that will result in the feel of a pop-up book.  The series is based on author/illustrator Lara Jones’ Poppy Cat series of books, which have sold 1.7+ million copies in Europe, Asia and Latin America since the first title was published in 2002.  Coolabi recently entered into a new development deal with Disney Channel’s London based Global Original Programming hub for The Shaila Show.

Ben 10 grows up in the new Cartoon Network original series, Ben 10: Alien Force, which is set five year in the future and scheduled to bow in spring 2008 with a 1-hour special.  Now 15, Ben dons the Omnitrix to find that it has played with his DNA allowing him to morph into 10 new aliens.  Ben 10: Alien Force is being produced at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank, California.  Ben 10 was created by Man of Action, founded by Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, Duncan Rouleau and Steve Seagle, and is produced by Sam Register.

Looks like David Bowie may join the cast of the Walden Media and Summit Entertainment movie Will, per Variety.  From writer/director Todd Graff (Camp) the fish out of water movie about the unlikely friendship that develops between a popular girl and an outsider boy, the band they put together and the music competition they jump into.  The movie will also star Liam Aiken (Series of Unfortunate Events) as Will, Vanessa Hudgens (HSM) as the popular gal, Lisa Kudro and Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights).

Sarah Ferguson, The Duchess of York and kid’s illustrator, Robin Preiss Glasser (Fancy Nancy, Our Fifty States) are partnering to create Tea For Ruby, a picture book about manners and etiquette.  Acquired by for Paula Wiseman Books/Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, Tea For Ruby will be published in fall 2008.  This will be the Duchess of York’s 27th published book, her others include Budgie the Helicopter and The Adventures of Little Red series.

MORE KIDS STUFF

In-between getting ready for the Super Bowl and/or ad watching, a lot of folks will be taking their kids to see the concert movie, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert 3D, which opened at the stroke of midnight last night.  But, tickets are pretty much sold out (regardless of the ticket price), which according to a Dallas Morning News report, are available in that city only for those “less desirable show times.” Complicating the matter is the fact that the movie is only in release for one week and is showing at just 684 theaters.  So, the school busses and classrooms may look a little sparse this morning due to Miley Cyrus-itis.

Come the end of the month, France’s TF1 will cease broadcast of the kids channel Tfou TV, effective February 29, choosing instead to shift its efforts to Tfou Web TV.  Tfou Web TV bowed on the web in October 2007, with a three-hour programming block, its lineup is expected to expand to include more animated series, live-action short-form programming as well as interactive games.  TF1 reports that since its launch Tfou Web TV has had 480,000 K4-10 visitors, who viewed an average of 8.5 minutes each visit.

February is Phineas and Ferb-ruary on Disney Channel, as the network features its new 2D animated series every day throughout the month at 8p, concluding with a marathon February 29 (3:30-8:15p).  Created by Dan Povenmire and Jeff Marsh, the series is produced by Walt Disney Television Animation.

Cartoon Network’s Chowder will host a mushy marathon on Valentine’s Day, February 14 (6-11p), which will feature love-themed episodes of Out of Jimmy’s Head, Camp Lazio, My Gym Partner’s a Monkey, Squirrel Boy and Chowder.

Italian production company Gruppo Alcuni enters into a deal with The Box Distribution to handle distribution for its new mixed 2D/CG animated series Leonardo (26×13) in French-speaking regions, according to Animation Magazine.  A Gruppo Alcuni co-production with Rai Fiction, Leonardo is expected to debut from April 2008.  The show revolves around the adventures of the young Leonardo da Vinci (13), his countless inventions along with his friends and ultimately his foes.

MARKETING/LICENSING

CBS Consumer Products appoints FremantleMedia Enterprises as its exclusive licensing agency for Australia and New Zealand. Under the deal FME will oversee and grow merchandising programs for CBS’ properties including Star Trek, Australia’s Next Top Model and class titles such as Happy Days, Brady Bunch and Beverly Hills 90210.

Cold Fusion Entertainment and Brainy Baby have signed an exclusive worldwide licensing deal.  Under the agreement Cold Fusion will identify and ink license deals to support the Brainy Baby brand, increase retail distribution in mass-market retailers, as well as providing marketing support (e.g. advertising, Pr and product development).  Discussions are currently underway with toy, book and apparel companies.

STONE SOUP

Casting: The producers of the indie movie Spidey Girl are looking to cast three Tweens/Teens 11-17 (girls/boys) in small roles in their picture through a contest. EXECUTIVE MOVES

Eric Shain moves up to VP/Production Finance, Disney ABC Cable Networks Group. Shain will oversee internal and external finance for development and production of short and long-form original programming for the group, which includes Disney Channel, Toon Disney and Jetix.  Shain, who most recently was Executive Director/Production Finance, reports to Jewell Engstrom, CFO and EVP, Disney ABC Cable Networks Group.
