Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 17, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.
Apple has unveiled Mountain Lion. It’s the next version (10.8 to be exact) of its Mac OS X operating system, which will be available this summer (unless you’re a Mac Developer, then have at it as of right now). With the features that are slated to be coming to Mountain Lion, the update will take a step toward creating a singular UI experience across Macs, iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads. Mountain Lion will be fully integrated with iCloud, which will allow users to sync things like notes, reminders, calendars and more across Apple devices, and Twitter, which will enable users to tweet directly from several other applications. The Safari browser has been given a new Share button with which users can share photos and videos via e-mail or to services like Flickr and Vimeo. The new iMessage offering that is available on iOS devices will replace the existing iChat feature on Macs, and will be compatible with other messaging platforms like Google Talk, Yahoo! and AOL Instant Messenger. Other new features include a Notification Center, the Game Center and a Gatekeeper, which offers a sturdier system in ensuring that users don’t download unsafe applications. Finally, Mountain Lion will also include AirPlay Mirroring with Apple TV so users can turn their televisions into a larger computer screen. Apple hasn’t revealed what the price of the update will be, but it will be distributed exclusively through the Mac App Store.
Hulu Plus is now available on the Nintendo Wii gaming console. Available for $7.99 just like on any other platform, users can stream current and past seasons of all the content available on the service. Wii owners who have broadband access can download the Hulu Plus app from the Wii Shop Channel. The app is also optimized for the gaming console, meaning users can navigate through Hulu Plus’ content library by pointing and clicking via the Wii Remote. Wii users who do not have an existing Hulu Plus account will be offered a two-week free trial; this offer is only available for the first month of the launch. Hulu says access to its paid service through the Nintendo 3DS will be coming later this year.
The 2012 NCAA March Madness Live web and mobile app will stream live video of every basketball game during the upcoming March Madness college basketball extravaganza. It is available for the iPhone, iPad, select Android phones and online, for $3.99, however it is available for free if you only want access to the other features, such as live scores, schedules, the tourney bracket and the ability to track social activity on Facebook and Twitter. For those who want free online streaming access to some of the games, most viewers (those who subscribe to television providers who have reached TV Everywhere deals with Turner Sports) will get to watch games aired on TBS, TNT and truTV on their respective online properties. All games that air on CBS will be available for free on CBSOnline.com.
Further news out of Comcast‘s earnings call this week, the cable operator will soon be testing out a new cloud-based video platform, branded as “X1” (previously “Xcalibur”), which will enable the company to offer video services on connected devices, such as TVs and tablets, that do not require the use of a set-top box. Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said it hopes to reach “hundreds of thousands” of customers by the end of the year.
CBS may produce original programming for Netflix down the road, said CEO Leslie Moonves during the company’s earnings call, per AllThingsD. He did not provide any further information in regards to discussions CBS may have had with the online streaming (and now original content) company.
The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences have announced the nominees for this year’s International Digital Emmy Awards. In total, there are 12 nominees spanning three award categories (Fiction; Non-Fiction; Children & Young People) and seven countries. The awards ceremony will take place during the first night of MIPTV 2012, on April 1, in Cannes. For the full list of the nominees, go here.
Facebook has launched verified accounts for individuals who have a big number of subscribers on their Facebook pages. Once verified, these individuals will also get the opportunity to display a preferred nickname, and will also receive prime placement in the section where Facebook offers recommendations for new page subscriptions. The move is an effort to prevent false accounts from spamming users on the site. Facebook will also manually approve the proposed nicknames in order to ensure that they are real; however, no verified symbol akin to Twitter and Google+ will appear on the page.
Google’s AdMob and Apple’s iAd mobile ad networks have lowered their prices in preparation of Facebook’s coming entry into the mobile advertising space, according to Mobile Marketer. The report says that changes Google has made to AdMob will most likely lower prices for advertisers, while Apple has simply lowered its minimum spend required to execute campaigns on iAd to $100,000 per campaign. It is another price drop from Apple, which launched iAd in 2010 with a minimum required spend of $1 million. The AdMob changes make the service similar to Google’s AdWords search advertising offering. The ads will be served based on their quality and the bids for impressions, and will not require minimum bids or targeting fees.
AdClarity is a new solution from Israel-based BIScience that the company says will offer advertisers more information in regards to what their competition is doing in digital advertising, reports TechCrunch. It will offer data such as where a digital ad campaign was executed, which ad networks, agencies and other intermediary companies were employed and what the ad creative looked like. At the moment, AdClarity only covers display ads and geographical targeting, according to what BIScience CEO Orey Gilliam tells TechCrunch. However, the company has plans to add “mobile, social and video channels.”
Mobile browser developer Opera Networks has acquired two mobile ad networks, London-based 4th Screen Advertising and San Francisco-based Mobile Theory, for $8 million and $18 million, respectively. Aside from the obvious reason to reach consumers across all mobile platforms, the move was made to help Opera monetize the traffic that flows through its Opera Mini and Opera Mobile browsers, which the company says serve more than 160 million monthly active users and generate more than 100 billion page views. Mobile Theory focuses on mobile advertising in the U.S. and reaches more than 60 million mobile users on over 300 mobile sites and apps, serving around 2 billion impressions per month; 4th Screen covers the European mobile market, with a publisher client base that includes The Guardian, MTV, Shazam and IMDb.
TruSignal, a digital ad targeting firm, and BlueKai, a provider of a platform for data management, analysis and acquisition, have announced an expanded partnership that will make TruSignal’s Ideal Audiences publicly available for purchase on the BlueKai Exchange, which is an online marketplace for anonymous third-party audience data. Ideal Audiences uses TruSignal’s patented predictive analytics and aggregated first- and third-party data to enable marketers to target key messages only to online consumers “that look like current high lifetime value customers.” The partnership will also allow direct-response marketers to combine BlueKai’s in-market data segments with TruSignal’s “high value” profile segments in order to help maximize ROI on direct customer-acquisition campaigns. TruSignal was recently spun off from eBureau, which has had a partnership with BlueKai since late 2010.
According to a Nielsen survey of adults with children under 12 years of age, seven out of every 10 children in tablet-owning households have used a tablet device in Q4 of 2011, which is a 9% increase over Q3 of the same year. 79% of respondents said that children played downloaded games on the tablets, while 57% said children used tablets to access educational apps. Furthermore, 55% indicated children used tablets for entertainment while traveling; and 41% answered children used the devices when in restaurants. As for watching TV shows, 43% of children in tablet-owning households do, according to the survey. The one thing they don’t do that often, however, is communicate with friends and family, with only 15% of respondents indicating that their children engage in such activities on tablets.
JWire, a mobile media company that seeks to help advertisers connect with audiences based on their physical location, has published a new “Mobile Audience Insights Report,” which finds that 75% of on-the-go audiences take action after seeing a location-specific message, and 80% prefer to see locally relevant advertising. Of the respondents who indicated they take actions, the top action is clicking on location-specific ads (31%). In addition, the report found that 34% of in-store consumers compare prices via their mobile devices. With all of that in mind, David Staas, SVP of marketing at JWire, said, “As the on-the-go audience demands locally relevant information, brands need to focus on reaching consumers in and around their locations.”
In honor of the new 2012 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, the magazine has launched the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Viewer mobile app for iOS and Android that lets users scan pages from the popular issue in order to get access to behind-the-scenes videos of that model’s photo shoot. The app is being sponsored by DirecTV with cover model Kate Upton appearing in an ad for the satellite company at the end of each video. Available for free, the app was built by Nellymoser, a mobile ad company that builds content campaigns via digital watermarking and 2D action codes. The digitally watermarking technology comes from the Digimarc Corporation using its Digimarc Discover Platform.

Loudlee is a new “social music network” that has just been released in beta mode. It allows users to play, share and discover new music from YouTube. The site has curated songs available on the video site and packaged them in an album-style format. For example, if you are like me and enjoy the music of Pink Floyd’s The Division Bell (I know it’s post-Roger Waters, but I like it, don’t judge me) or Radiohead’s In Rainbows, you simply click the cover image of the album (the aforementioned two are available straight from the home page) and a playlist featuring all the available tracks from the album pops up on the right-hand side of the page. Being that it is in beta mode, Loudlee says that right now it is being offered as an invite-only service. However, if you click the above link you will receive two prompts: one if you’ve already received an invite and one asking if you want an invite. Click the former option, which requires a log-in via Facebook, and you should be good to go. The site also lets you build your own playlists, so enjoy the free service if you want easy access to a wide array of tunes; especially those that are, sadly, not currently available on Spotify.
