CBS previously announced renewals for Survivor and The Amazing Race.

Tonight’s Finales:
Lifetime: How to Look Good Naked at 9p
USA: Psych at 10p

Sunday’s Premieres:
FUEL TV: FUEL TV Presents Camp Woodward at 830p
Fox Movie Channel: Life After Film School at 930p
CBS: Dexter at 10p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

In an unusual industry move, NBC and MTV are partnering on a promotional stunt where both networks will premiere the original drama series quarterlife from Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick on the same day. MTV will air a 22-minute sneak preview of the show February 26 at 430p after TRL, then the hour-long program will premiere on NBC at 10p. NBC will also give MTV promotional spots and snipes to include in the preview. Beginning March 2, the show will move to 9p Sunday’s on NBC. Herskovitz and Zwick are no strangers to MTV, as their series My So-Called Life was re-broadcast on the cable net in the 1990s after being cancelled on ABC.

Four networks, ABC, CBS, CW and FOX, will all present traditional upfront shows. NBC remains a question mark, having said during the writers strike it may not go forward with a full blown upfront presentation this year. ABC’s showcase will be May 13 at Lincoln Center; CBS’ is set for May 14 at Carnegie Hall; while on May 15 FOX will hold its upfront at the New York City Center and CW will host at Madison Square Garden.  With that said, however, all four networks may change their presentations to make them more low-key.

FOX unveiled a couple of summer series: season four of So You Think You Can Dance starts off with a two-night, four-hour premiere on May 22 at 8p with Part 1 and Part 2 on May 29 at 8p and the series opener of When Women Rule the World (wt) on June 2 at 8p.

Girlfriends, a staple on UPN and now on The CW for 8 years, will call this season its last.  The show will not produce a final episode to air this season.  Rather network has chosen to only resume production following the strike on shows that it plans to bring in the fall. In a statement, the CW said in part: “This was a very difficult decision for us, and was based solely on the considerable cost to license each episode in an extremely unusual business environment.”  The network is considering producing a special retrospective on the show to air this season.

TV Land opens a new reality series High School Reunion March 5 at 10p. If this one sounds familiar, it should be – the series aired previous on The WB, tho these new episodes feature the classmates reuniting after twenty years, not ten.

HGTV will bring back its interior design competition show HGTV Design Star for a third season starting June 8 at 9p. Prior to that, viewers are invited to vote for their favorite semi-finalist to be added to the show. From February 18 through March 3, two designers, Kimberly Lewis and Stephanie Cook, will compete through an online vote via www.HGTV.com/designstar with the winner joining the TV show cast of professional architects, interior designers, business owners and artists. The judging panel for this third installment will consist of Vern Yip, Cynthia Rowley and Martha McCully.

USA Network has picked up the exclusive cable rights to the Paramount/Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which comes out in theatres on May 22.  According to Variety, USA has acquired this film as well as the three previous Indiana Jones films, and the window on those earlier titles will tie in with the spring premiere of the newest Harrison Ford installation. Crystal Skull goes to USA in 2011.

A fifth season of Wire in the Blood begins on BBC America April 6 at 8p. The four two-hour episodes open with “Prayer of the Bone” an episode shot in Austin, TX. The series is a co-production of Coastal Production and BBC America in association with Ingenious Broadcasting 2LLP and distributed by Southern Star.

Early next month, TLC introduces a new real-life series that allows stay-at-home moms to have a secret life in the career fast-lance once again. The Secret Life of a Soccer Mom, with host Tracey Gold, premieres March 3 at 10p. During each 60m episode, a different mom will be profiled as she experiences what it would be like to return to the 9-to-5 world. At the end, she will have to choose between her duel life or return to her family. The series is produced by GRB Entertainment and will be simulcast on TLC and TLC HD.

Gallery HD, part of the VOOM HD suite of networks, debuts a new half-hour 10-episode series, Forger’s Master Class featuring well-known art forger John Myatt on March 3 at 830p. In each episode, John will teach three aspiring artists how to copy a masterpiece from landscapes by Hopper and Cezanne to a portrait by Renoir down to the last technique.

Season three of After Hours with Daniel resumes on MOJO HD March 16 at 9p. This new season follows Chef Daniel Boulud as he co-creates late-night meals with chefs in five South Florida restaurants over five 30m episodes and in New Orleans for five more. Tiara Blu Films is the production company.

ABC New Media Sales, a division of ABC National Television Sales, signed a representation deal with PumpTop TV, a digital media network with screens at gas pumps currently in several West Coast markets. PumpTop TV has a network of 3,000+ screens at major gas station companies in the Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and Sacramento markets as well as Phoenix starting next month. New installations will occur in Dallas, Houston, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston later this year. PumpTop offers :15 and :30 spots with full-motion, broadcast quality audio and video or static image, animated GIF or Flash spots without audio adjacent to news content from ABC News Now.

ION Media Networks, Inc. just added its 24-hour linear digital channels qubo, ION LIFE and The Worship Network on the Verizon FiOS TV channel lineup in Verizon’s New York and Northern New Jersey markets. Recently, the ION channels were added to the FiOS TV lineup in Philadelphia, California, North Texas and the Washington metro area.

At Nielsen Media’s Client Meeting on Audience Measurement in Las Vegas yesterday, new data regarding playback from Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) was revealed:

  • Comparing total television usage (live viewing plus DVR playback) in November 2007 to November 2005 among A18-49, viewing had increased slightly throughout the day, was 3% higher at 9p and 5% higher between 11p-midnight.
  • Based on this report, Nielsen says the traditional primetime period (8p-11p) is expanding to midnight as viewers create their own “personal television schedules” to watch shows they recorded.
  • Heavy Shifters are mainly middle income women aged 18-49 who record and later watch almost 26 hours of TV programming per week.
  • Medium Shifters watch a little more than the average person and time shift about a third of their TV viewing.
  • Light Shifters, who represent almost 70% of all persons in DVR households, watch less TV than the average viewer, have incomes of $100,000+, most likely own an HD TV set and time shift only 10% of their television time.
  • Nielsen reported people still like to watch news, sports and movies live. Dramas such as House, Grey’s Anatomy and Heroes are most often recorded and viewed later, making up one-third of all time-shifted content. Other shows such as Oprah, soaps like The Young and Restless and reality shows Survivor, The Biggest Loser and Dancing with the Stars are also heavily time-shifted.
~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Viacom’s Logo network approved an original full-length feature film based on its series Noah’s Arc about four black gay friends living in Los Angeles. The movie’s story line will pick up the action after the series’ second season cliffhanger. Production will begin next month in Canada with a release happening the second half of this year. The cast will include the series’ stars Darryl Stephens as Noah, Doug Spearman (Chance), Rodney Chester (Alex) and Christian Vincent (Ricky).

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   Google apparently withdrew from the FCC’s C block wireless spectrum auction, leaving AT&T and Verizon to duke it out for a platform that can be used to deliver advanced interactive wireless services. In so doing, the company may achieve what it wanted all along  more competition in the wireless market without spending a dime, argues Business Week, because the spectrum comes tied with open-access requirements. Meanwhile bidding for the 700 Mhz C block band (which everyone thought Google wanted for the “G-phone”) has petered out after a single $472 million bid  well below the $1.3 billion “reserve” price. Perhaps the FCC should have offered a Buy It Now option.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. (Or to listen to the Cynopsis Digital Podcast click here or subscribe to it at iTunes here .)
