CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

02/10/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 10, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Fox has announced its plans to launch an unwired programming service that will help its current UPN stations fill their primetime hours with first run strip series, once the UPN affiliation disappears in the fall.  Fox has been in talks with various syndicators and production companies in building the model and will have more information on it in the upcoming weeks.  It’s expected Fox will use its new telenovela series Desire, currently set to debut in syndication this June, as a potential component of its primetime programming service. The biggest stations effected by the loss of the UPN affiliation are WWOR/NY and KCOP/LA.   Fox also said it would not look to pick up the CW affiliation in four of its current UPN markets – Minneapolis, Orlando, Baltimore and Phoenix.  In each of these markets there is no CBS or Tribune owned stations, so the station gaining the new network affiliation is up for grabs. The CW will be looking for reverse compensation from its stations, as well as full carriage of a 3-5p off-net programming block and Saturday morning kids programming from WB Kids, in addition to the primetime lineup.

Tonight’s Premiere:
NBC:    The Winter Olympics at 8p with Opening Ceremonies

Tonight’s Finale:
Fox:    Arrested Development 2-hour finale starting at 8p

*MORE GOOD STUFF*Al Michaels will be ready for some football this fall, NBC style.  Paired again with John Madden in the NBC booth, Michaels was in effect traded to NBC, and in return for letting him out of the final 8 years on his current ABC contract, NBC came up with a shopping cart of stuff to give ABC.  In that shopping cart are the rights for ABC to rebroadcast the Friday coverage of NBC’s Ryder Cup coverage for four consecutive championship matchups, broadcast highlights from the upcoming Olympic Winter Games thru the 2012 Summer games, air highlights from a variety of other NBC Sports events including the Kentucky Derby and Notre Dame football games, and finally Disney will get back Oswald, a 1927 cartoon series of 26 episodes created by Walt Disney, to which Universal had the distribution and licensing rights.  Al Michaels and John Madden will make their NBC Sports football debut on August 6.

Putting all speculation aside, CBS’ Love Monkey is on hiatus. The Tuesday 10p time period will be filled when Amazing Race moves to 10p on March 7, as The Unit debuts in the 9p time period.   Between now and March, the time period will see a repeat of NCIS, CSI and then the two hour debut of Race on February 28.

Quick Program Note from The WB:  The drama series The Bedford Wives has changed premiere dates.  Instead of launching on March 22, it is now scheduled to debut on March 29 at 9p.  The Bedford Wives is from Warner Bros. TV, HBO Independent and Levinson/Fontana.

The TV upfront season got an early start in NYC yesterday as Disney ABC Kids Networks rolled out its multiplatform Mix It Up plan aiming to reach kids, tweens and families, through customizable options on a smorgasbord of broadband services, TV networks, as well as through Radio Disney and Disney Publishing.  The 2006-2007 TV season will bring a mix of 849 new episodes from 11 new and returning series and 25 new movies on Disney Channel, ABC Kids Saturday morning programming block, Toon Disney.  The Mix it Up theme was used on the TV side by cross-pollinating their shows on several networks to reach different audiences.  Fall 2006 will also see the launch of the Disney Channel original series Lizzie McGuire and Even Stevens into syndication.

For those not so interested in the Super Bowl, there was the second annual Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet.  Lest you giggle, keep in mind 6.7 million tuned in to see the little fellas bandy about, not to mention a few kittens tossed in (cheerleaders?). And here’s the other piece – many of the puppies came from shelters and were looking for homes. Online, viewers were directed to Pet Connection where they could get more information about fostering a pet in their own community.

The Nets v. Knicks game on Wednesday night aired twice in the New York DMA – once on the MSG Network, and simultaneously on the YES Network.  This was the first time in a head-to-head matchup that YES out delivered MSG with 103,000 viewers over MSG’s 86,000 viewers. In household ratings, the game on YES earned a 1.2 rating, while the MSG game delivered a .9, according to Nielsen Media Research numbers provided by YES.

NBC daytime soaper Passions will join the Sci-Fi Channel daytime lineup as of February 13, airing at 9am, beginning wtih Episode #1.  The show is currently in its sixth season on NBC and is produced by by NBC Studios in association Outpost Farms Productions, Inc.

A version of the 50-year old Eurovision Song Contest is coming to stateside.  The format rights to the oldest and largest TV music competition in Europe were picked up by Ben Silverman’s ReveilleNBC has already commissioned the project based on the format from Reveille.  Like Eurovision, the new show will center on original songs rather than cover songs, with each U.S. state selecting a band or singer for a national competition per Variety.  The winners will receive a recording contract and more.  Participant rules and the premiere date details are still being hammered out.

Actor Franklin Cover died on Sunday, he was 77.  Known best to most baby-boomer TV viewers as George’s upstairs neighbor Tom Willis on The Jeffersons, he was also made numerous appearances on All in the Family, Who’s the Boss?, Mad ABout You and more recently on ER, Will & Grace and in films including The Great Gatsby, The Stepford Wives and Wall Street.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Sci-Fi Channel has ordered up a new series called Eureka, set to debut this summer.  According to Hollywood Reporter, the channel has ordered a 2-hour pilot, plus 11 episodes. The cast includes Colin Ferguson, Joe Morton and Salli Richardson-Whitfield, and the premise is a sleepy little Pacific Northwest town where a group of government scientists are in the midst of top secret research.

E! Entertainment has ordered 8 episodes of the 30m project The Chelsea Handler Show, to air in primetime.  Handler is a comedian seen often on The Tonight Show as a special correspondent, and starring in Oxygen’s series Girls Behaving Badly. The new sketch comedy show will include various field pieces, spoofs and parts of Handler’s stand-up act, says Hollywood Reporter.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1861 – Jefferson Davis receives word that he has been selected president of the new Confederate States of America.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question: Friday kicks off the opening ceremonies for the 2006 Winter Olympics.  This actress of a long running comedy, mid ’80s to early ’90s, tried out for the 1968 Olympics as a gymnast.  Who is she?  JOANNA KERNS   Kudos to: Anthony Salerno-Media Marketing Solutions/NY; Elizabeth Keller-MMT Sales/NY; Barbara Rosenthal-Tiffany Press/NY; Joanna Kuebel-Spot Plus/Dallas; Pam Tierney-MMT/Chicago; Taylor Loeb-Mirage/LA

Today’s Trivia Question courtesy of Tom Fontana, Levinson/Fontana, NYC: Name the actress who played Martha Jefferson in the movie 1776.  And the actress who played Martha Jefferson’s daughter, Patsy, in the movie Jefferson in Paris. Hint:  They are mother and daughter in real life. (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone.
