Good morning. It’s Friday, December 9, 2011, and this your first early morning briefing.
LA-based A Squared Entertainment (A2) and India’s Tata Elxsi, a design, animation and effects studio, have finalized their partnership to form the joint venture A Squared Elxsi Entertainment (A2E2), initially announced in January 2011. Under the joint venture, A2E2 will create, develop and distribute original kid-targeted brands, including animated entertainment, digital gaming and originally designed consumer products. Tata Elxsi’s Visual Computing Lab (VCL) is an animation, visual effects and game development studio based in India, with a studio in Santa Monica, California. Having worked on a range of movie and TV projects, its most recent productions include the movie Roadside Romeo (co-produced by Disney and Yash Raj Films) and TV commercials for Coke, Reebok, and Wrigley. Co-presidents Andy and Amy Heyward will manage the new A2E2 from the LA office. A2 and Tata Elxsi were brought together by sportscaster Vijay Amritraj, also a former tennis star, who will serve in an advisory role for the new joint venture. Also serving an advisory role for A2E2 is Elizabeth Daley, the University of Southern California’s (USC) School of Cinematic Arts Dean.
Hasbro unveils its plans to eliminate polyvinyl chloride (PVC) from all new core toy and game packaging beginning in 2013. Hasbro has already begun to phase out PVC from some packaging, and has committed to completely eliminating PVC in packaging for new product beginning in 2013. “At a time when consumers have an abundance of choices, we hope our track record of innovation and corporate citizenship including our focus on sustainable packaging and product safety, will give shoppers one more reason to choose our products…,” said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s president and chief executive officer. Phasing out PVC in packaging is the most recent effort in a series of sustainable packaging initiatives by Hasbro.
