Twitter has overhauled both its website and apps. The redesign will make the user experience simpler and faster, according to Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and CEO Dick Costolo. The sleek new visual design includes the shifting of a user’s main Twitter feed to the right side of the screen; conversely, the navigation bar slides over to the left. The top bar is now separated by four main tabs, “Home,” or the main timeline; “Connect,” a.k.a mentions and retweets from other users; “Discover,” a new function designed by Twitter that features current trends along with news that Twitter has determined is relevant to that specific user; and over to the right side of the page, general user profile-related items. Starting with 21 initial partners, brands will get the opportunity to have “enhanced” profiles that offer wide profile banners and the option to feature an individual tweet above the regular feed. Some users already have access to the new Twitter online, while others will gradually receive it in the coming weeks. More information on the redesign can be found here .
On December 10, Yahoo! will be co-hosting the primetime GOP presidential debate with ABC News. As Yahoo! and ABC news have an existing online content partnership, the debate will feature a multiplatform, real-time audience engagement initiative through Yahoo! News. This will include a real-time polling and feedback portion done through IntoNow from Yahoo!, a social TV mobile app (and former Digital WOTD) that will allow viewers to check-into the debate and read related news and tweets. Through the app, viewers will also be able to respond to polls, giving the moderators an opportunity to provide real-time feedback to both the audience and the debaters. Additional analysis on both the debate and the polls will be provided online by David Chalian of Yahoo! News during commercial breaks. Pre- and post-debate coverage will also be broadcasted online on Yahoo! and ABCNews.com.
Facebook will soon be launching a “Subscribe” button for websites. The upcoming plug-in is capable of being embedded onto sites, allowing users one-click access to subscribing to the site’s updates on the social media channel. An optional service, Subscriptions are intended for users who want to receive updates from brands, celebrities, journalists or any other individual with whom they are not Facebook friends. If elected, the user’s News Feed will be populated with updates from the subscription as they are published.
Speaking of Facebook, A+E Networks’ HISTORY Channel’s page on the social networking site has reached 7 million fans. The channel becomes the third cable network to surpass this milestone, following MTV and Discovery.
Verizon FiOS is teaming up with Spanish-language network Vme to sponsor a series of live holiday events at select malls in LA, New York, Dallas and Washington, D.C. As per the partnership, Verizon will sponsor mall displays, including interactive digital stations featuring Vme programming, as well as videos from other FiOS channels. The two companies will also hold a sweepstakes in each market, which will award the winner numerous big gifts, including a 60″ TV, an iPad, an iPod, a computer and a $2,400 gift card for FiOS services.
Rich media advertising platform provider Crisp Media has purchased Smart Device Media. The agreement will help Crisp Media enhance its ad services offering by matching Smart Device’s array of mobile advertising inventory from premium publishers with brand advertisers. As part of the deal, the new company will still operate as Crisp Media and Smart Device co-founder Jason Young will assume the role of CEO for Crisp Media; the company’s outgoing CEO, Boris Fridman, will continue to serve as board member.
GateHouse Media has announced a new private exchange, with digital media buying platform MediaMath signing on as one of its exclusive buyers. Powered by Casale Media’s real-time bidding technology and bid management platform, the private exchange is designed to make it easier for select agency trading desks and demand-side platforms (such as MediaMath) to purchase GateHouse Media inventory. GateHouse Media is a local news and information media company that owns over 400 hyper-local web properties across 20 states, as well as over 150 local newspapers in the Massachusetts market alone.
IGN has signed an agreement with FreeWheel to use the video technology company’s Revenue & Payments Management (RPM) Partner platform. An extension to FreeWheel’s RPM platform, RPM Partner will allow IGN to manage all of its partner contracts and ensure that the correct payments are issued to the appropriate parties at the right time. RPM Partner was developed to help media and entertainment companies manage contracts and payments across various business models, including subscriptions, rentals, downloads and merchandising. While the end-to-end financial operations RPM platform from FreeWheel is currently employed by numerous entertainment companies, IGN will be one of the first to sign onto the RPM Partner extension; the company was already a customer of FreeWheel’s monetization rights management platform prior to this new deal.
Two-thirds of tech marketers surveyed expect their budgets to rise an average of 3.5% in 2011 over 2010, finds a global study from IDG Research Center. Digital Programs will account for 50.1% of the marketing/ad budget, with 58% allocated towards demand generation and 42% on branding. The survey also found that 2011 predicted digital spending is split in half between branded tech media websites and a combination of ad networks, exchanges and real-time bidding systems. In terms of what types of digital ads will be prioritized in the 2012 spending budget, respondents’ answers indicated that lead generation will grab 26.6% share of budget, with display/banner ads and digital video likely receiving a 19.6% and 7.8% share, respectively.
A recent Strategy Analytics study forecasts sales of HTML5-supporting handsets to increase by 365% between 2011 and 2016, reports Mobile Marketer. “As the HTML5 standard’s development grows with more APIs being added in the near-to long-term, we will witness the overall functionality and user experience of HTML5-based apps reaching closer to existing non HTML5-based apps and services,” said Neil Shah, a wireless device strategies analyst at Strategy Analytics. Shah went onto predict that social networking, gaming and mobile video apps will “lead the pack for HTML-based solutions in 2012,” according to the report. HTML5 adoption is growing as Adobe recently jettisoned its Flash service in favor of focusing more towards HTML5 development.
Facebook has reorganized its corporate team around five specific product areas in order to “streamline the product development process,” said the social networking company in a statement. Chief Technology Officer Bret Taylor will lead the mobile division; VP of Product Christopher Cox will head general product; Director of Engineering Greg Badros will oversee ads engineering; VP of Engineering Mike Schroepfer will be responsible for the engineering department; and Product Manager Sam Lessin will oversee the group focusing on profiles and the new Facebook Timeline feature. Each division head will report directly to CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
