A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM WARNER BROS. DOMESTIC CABLE DISTRIBUTION
WARNER BROS. PRODUCES SERIES TWO AND A HALF MEN • GEORGE LOPEZ Available for Cable Premiere CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Good morning. It’s Friday, December 9, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. It’s 5am here in Connecticut, and the much bally-hoo’d snow storm has just begun. Here’s to it living up to its hype! Still with two shows on the air, the staff at Spelling TV was cut significantly yesterday. Still running the show at Spelling TV are Aaron Spelling, E. Duke Vincent and Jonathan Levin. Approx 25 were let go, leaving about 10. Going forward, Spelling TV is now working as a unit of Paramount Network TV, and the positions eliminated are those already filled by the studio, including legal, finance and business departments – the so-called backroom departments. 7th Heaven will end its 10 year run this spring, and the other current series is Charmed, both on the WB network. * MORE GOOD STUFF *Comedy Central has ordered up a second season of The Showbiz Show with David Spade. Season #2 kicks off on March 23, 2006 with 13 new episodes. The first season premiered last September and throughout its season had averaged 1 million viewers per episode. From the “it ain’t over until it’s over” department, CBS’ Amazing Race finishes its season, and then continues with Teams #2 and #3 in a playoff to see which team wins a new GMC car. The play will take place not on broadcast TV, but on the internet at CBS.com where it will be streamed on December 13 immediately after the show’s official finale on the west coast next Tuesday, December 13 (9-11p). Okay, perhaps you’ve heard the rumors and you’ve been wondering. So let’s put it to rest. Jeff Probst will stick with Survivor for the next two years. Now you can sleep. Sci Fi Channel‘s three part miniseries The Triangle drew in an average of 4.2 million viewers across all three nights, and averaged a 3.6 HH rating. That’s good enough to make The Trial the highest rated miniseries since Steven Spielberg’s Taken in 2002. Kids’ WB new Saturday morning programming line-up kicks off tomorrow: Dancing with the Stars returns to ABC on January 5th with host Tom Bergeron. And this year’s celebrity dancers are: George Hamilton, actress Tia Carrere, jounalist Giselle Fernandez, WWE diva Stacy Keibler, pop star Drew Lachey, ESPN personality Kenny Mayne, actress Tatum O’Neal, Super Bowl champion Jerry Rice, SoapNet’s Lisa Rinna, and rap star Romeo. Let’s visit the rumor again that Katie Couric may be jumping ship and sliding into the anchor chair at CBS Evening News. Couric says uh-uh, she’s staying put at NBC. In fact she said, “I know there’s a great deal of speculation, and while I appreciate the interest, kind of, my contract ends in May and I’m trying to figure out what I’m going to do. I’m fortunate to have a couple of opportunities to think long and hard about.” Project Runway had its season #2 debut on Wednesday night at 10p, and 924,000 viewers tuned in – making this the most viewed season premiere in the network’s history for a Wednesday night. In the all-important demos, 686,000 A18-49 tuned in, 599,000 in the A25-54 category, and in the slightly younger set of A18-34, 423,000 were watching to find out who was in and who was out. Programming Note: CBS‘ premiere of Love Monkey on January 17 has been moved from 9p to 10p, thereby moving it further away from the premiere of American Idol at 8p on Fox. The following week, and weekly thereafter it will air in its original time period at 9p. Ont he 17th, the CBS primetime schedule begins with NCIS, a special CSI airing at 9p, and Love Monkey at 10p. * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *MTV has ordered up a new documentary series called Cheyenne, about the singer-songwriter/musical prodigy, Cheyenne Kimball. This young lady booked herself at local nightclubs when she was 8 years old, at ten she was crowned America’s Most Talented Kid, and now at fifteen, she is signed to Columbia records and about to release her first album. And if that’s no enough, MTV has another series ready for debut called There & Back, feature the current life of former O-Town heart-throb, Ashley Parker Angel. Angel continues his music career now as a solo, and prepares for his new album scheduled for release in 2006. The show is set to debut on January 9th at 1030p. Coming to the Style Network is a new series called Try My Life set to debut on January 4 at 9p with 8 episodes. The one hour drama reality series invites families to see what it’s like to truly walk in another family shoes. Rather than concentrating on a single family, each episode will focus on a different family each week, who then swap lives for a period of three days. NBC has ordered a script of a drama project called The Bogeyman (working title), written by Erik Jendresen. The set up is simple – it focuses on a guy who “de-programs” people who have been brainwashed, either by a cult group, victims of kidnapping, long term abuse, etc. Lest you scarf, on board as consultant is Rick Ross who really does this job for a living. This project comes from NBC Universal Television Studio. CBS has picked up a new comedy project called Sex, Power, Love & Politics, set in the spicy backdrop of Washington DC. The focus is on four bright and ambitious 30-somethings, all working at the White House, all still with dreams of launching their own political careers one day. The project was created by Greg Malins, produced by Sony Pictures Television. HBO has a new project in development with George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh’s production company Section Eight, an unscripted comedy about a newly formed NBA expansion team, a couple of key players, its coach, and the team’s cheerleaders. According to Variety, former coach of the Dallas Mavericks Don Nelson, is on board to play the Coach; while former Lakers’ player Vlade Divac is in talks to appear as one of the key players. * EXECUTIVE MOVES *Thomas F. Burchill has been named CEO of Venaca, Inc., a technology company providing digital asset management solutions for the media industry. The announcement was made today by Scott Spector, Chairman and Founder of Venaca, Inc. Tom’s focus will be on refining the product and service, and supporting the management team in order to take Venaca to its next level of success. E! Networks has announce a new corporate, naming Salaam Coleman Smith as SVP/Style Network (yeah!), Lisa Berger as E!’s SVP/Programming Development; and Cyndi McClellan as SVP/Research & Program Strategy, also for E!. Salaam is charged with leading the network, overseeing program development, current series programming, program scheduling and acquisitions. Lisa has expanded to now oversee all series programming, including her existing E! development responsibilities, as well as current series and specials previously handled by Salaam. Cyndi will be responsible for all research for both E! and Style, short and long-term strategic planning, and will expand her role to oversee Salaam’s previous acquisitions and scheduling responsibilities for E!. WPP Group’s Burson-Marsteller named Mark Penn as its global CEO. He is taking over the position from Thomas Nides, who resigned in July to join Morgan Stanley as CAO. Mark’s opinion research agency, WPP’s Penn Schoen & Berland, will now be integrated into Burson-Marsteller. The agency will report to Mark with Mike Berland running the show as CEO. First Look Studios named Ken DuBow as EVP/Worldwide Sales. He will be responsible for overseeing U.S. sales and syndication growth and global sales. Ken was previously president/CEO of Modern Entertainment before its sale to Lions Gate. He will report to COO Bill Lischak and CEO Henry Winterstern. First Look also named Andy Gruenberg as EVP/Theatrical Distribution. He will be in charge of expanding domestic distribution and overseeing original and acquired picture releases. Andy recently headed up the distribution company MAC Releasing with Mike Marcus and Craig Baumgarten. He will also report to CEO Henry Winterstern. * RATINGS *Broadcast Daytime Ratings Rankings – Women 18-49, week of Nov 28-Dec 4, 2005: Wednesday — A18-49 Analysis: In the world of fast affiliate ratings, ABC led the night on Wednesday with an overall 3.3/9 A18-49 rating, according to Nielsen Media Research, ahead of Fox 3.0/8, NBC 2.9/8, CBS 2.0/5, UPN 1.7/4, WB 1.0/3.
