12/08/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, December 8, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

After a two-year contentious battle for control, News Corp. and Liberty Media have confirmed they struck a deal to swap Liberty’s 19% stake in News Corp. (estimated value is $11 billion) for a shopping list that includes DirecTV, three regional sports networks and $550 million in cash. The official terms of the tax-friendly agreement could be revealed next week. This deal effectively eliminates any Liberty Media shareholder interest in News Corp., and will give Liberty a 38.6% stake in DirecTV.  It also gets rid of the #2 shareholder in News Corp, and raises the Murdoch family voting stake to 36% from the current 30%.

Tonight’s Finale:
Rave HD:  Soundstage at 9p
Lifetime:  Monarch Cove at 11p

The CW delivered its highest rated night to date Wednesday when it aired the finale of America’s Next Top Model and One Tree Hill. The CW ranked #1 for the evening among A18-34 with a 3.3/10 and among W18-34 at 5.0/14. Top Model at 8p led in several key demos:  3.0/12 among A18-34, 5.9/17 W18-34 and 4.5/12 with W18-49. Benefiting from the strong Top Model lead-in, One Tree Hill had its best performance among W18-34 with a 4.1/11.

Nielsen Media Research convened a meeting of 100 major national clients in New York yesterday to discuss the next steps in creating a commercial ratings standard. Susan Whiting, Nielsen’s President & CEO, said, “although there is disagreement in how we do it, all of you would agree that we are moving toward using commercial ratings in negotiations.”  Discussions included the possibility of revising the current three streams of ratings playback data now available. Currently, ratings are available for live viewing, live + same day and live + seven days. Clients favored adding Live + 2 or Live + 3 days and possibly replacing existing feeds after seeing Adult 18-49 ratings that showed 84% of broadcast prime and higher percents of cable and syndication are played back within three days of broadcast.  Nielsen will canvass clients over the next two weeks before making a final decision on a schedule for releasing average commercial minute ratings and which streams of data will be included.  (Contributed by Dave Zornow, TNG Research – NY)

Oxygen’s Tuesday night premiere of The Bad Girls Club at 10p captured an 0.9 rating among W18-24 and an 0.8 among W18-34, making it the highest rated original series debut among these two demos for the network to date.

Bravo premieres its one-hour 10-episode competition reality series Top Design on January 31 at 11p, following the season two finale of Top Chef. Top Design, which focuses on the interior design industry with 12 designers vying for the grand prize and hosted by Todd Oldham, will move to its regular 10p time period on February 7.

The hi-def 24-hour music channel RAVE HD, one of the 15 VOOM HD Networks, has re-upped its original concert series Soundstage for a third season. Beginning tonight, Soundstage: Jewel will air at 9p, with new concerts following each Friday night at 9p.

Animal Planet will premiere its newest series Ms. Adventure on January 19 at 9p showcasing comedian Rachel Reenstra. In each episode, Rachel travels worldwide to gain perspective on human behavior through the animals she encounters. Ms. Adventure is produced by Tiger/Tigress Productions for Animal Planet.

The NFL Network’s coverage of its second season primetime game on Thursday, Nov 30th, featuring the Ravens vs. Bengals, delivered national demo ratings of 2.3 among M18-49 and 2.5 among M25-54. In national households, NFL delivered a 2.3 rating for the night.

* BROADBAND & DIGITAL *

Time Warner Cable will soon add the free service Music Choice On Demand to its VOD offerings. With this addition, Music Choice will reach 20 million U.S. households. Music Choice content includes music videos, exclusive shows, artist of the month profiles and more.

* PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT *

In development at Fox is a new comedy from Conundrum Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV called The Rules for Starting Over about a guy in his thirty’s getting back into the dating scene after his divorce.  Hanging with him are his buddies, also divorced, and together they try to figure out the new rules for dating.  Fox has given the project a script commitment.

A couple of orders at Lifetime and one primetime change.  First the change – Monarch Cove has been downgraded to Fridays at 11p from primetime (airing tonight with its season finale).   The show premiered on Saturdays at 10p with 1.4 million viewers, but dipped in successive weeks and subsequently was moved to Friday nights.  There the audience fall off was more precipitous, averaging just a dash over 500,000 viewers.   On to the orders – two drama pilots – The Virgin of Akron, Ohio, and The Madness of Ava. Virgin is from Fox TV Studios and is about a woman who moves home from NYC to live with her family after a brief stay in rehab.  The Madness of Ava is based on a true story about a brilliant neurosurgeon who learns she is bipolar. The project stars Ever Carradine.

ABC has a new game show in development from Phil Gurin, the producer of The Weakest Link, called Wanna Bet?  The show is currently a major league hit in Germany, and ABC is looking at making a stateside version, according to Variety. The idea is simple – contestants bet if they can pull of outrageous and perhaps stunts.  And other contestants gamble on the potential success of the stunt.  The original German version also includes musical performances and celebrities – no decision yet if the US format will include celebrities on a regular basis.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

NBC Universal Television has upped Alicen Schneider to VP/Music Creative Services and Nicole de la Torriente to VP/Music Business Affairs, where both will become co-leaders of the department after the retirement of NBC veteran Martha Hanrahan, SVP/NBC Universal Television Music at the end of this year.

Doug Herzog, who supervises MTV Networks’ Comedy Central, Spike TV and TV Land, will also head a new division called MTV Entertainment Group, reporting to Judy McGrath, Chairman/Chief Executive, MTV Networks. This new division combines these three male-skewing networks along with recently acquired online properties that appeal to men such as IFilm, Atom Films, XFire and GameTrailers with the goal to make it easy for advertisers to reach young men.

Channel M has added Rick Thiedig as its VP/Finance, based at the company’s Los Angeles headquarters. Rick was previously the Business Manager/VP Finance for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc.

Friday Fun Fact: The storage capacity of the human brain exceeds four terabytes.  And if you’re counting – a terabyte = 1000 gigabytes.  Ahhhh, that’s a lotta bytes.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1980-Beatles fans around the world are heartbroken by the murder of John Lennon by a deranged fan.  Lennon was shot at close range just outside the Dakota, his apartment building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.  Lennon’s wife Yoko Ono memorialized her husband by landscaping a small portion of Central Park across the street from the Dakota, which is now known as “Strawberry Fields.”

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:  Mitsumo Takahashi could have been the name of a very well known restaurant on TV.  What is the name by which we do know this restaurant?   ARNOLD’S ON HAPPY DAYS!   Kudos to:  Andrea Eisen-Hibiscus Media Group LLC/Hollywood FL; Alicia Lordi-NBC Universal/NY; Michael Cummings-Cablevision News 12/Norwalk CT; Chuck Martin-WGNT-TV/Norfolk; Matt Rankin-WDAF/Kansas City; Kenny Mueller-Time Warner Cable Media Sales/Dallas; Kandy Hartsfield-KDAF/Dallas; Kathy Yarbrough-The Graham Group/New Orleans; Christian Reynolds-Spotplus/Dallas; Sidney Clifton-Film Roman/Starz Media/Burbank; Karen White-Pacific Soundwaves/Burbank; Adam Ripp-A Thomas Edison Invention/LA; Mary Warner-Sullivan Entertainment Inc/Toronto; Miriam Bernath-CBC Television/Toronto; Shari Siskind-Koladich-The Comedy Network/Toronto

Today’s Trivia Question: One of many holiday commercials from years ago was for coffee.  It included a little sister finding her brother home from college and making coffee in the early hours of Christmas morning.  What was the brother’s name? (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
