Good morning. It’s Friday, December 7, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

CBS laid out plans for its coverage of Super Bowl XLVII, taking root at Jackson Square in New Orleans for the creation of CBS Super Bowl Park. The area will play home to the network’s central broadcast center during Super Bowl week, with 15 different shows from nine CBS divisions set to cover the events for the company. Coverage will run from Monday, Jan. 28 to Super Bowl Sunday on Feb. 3. Shows and divisions set to broadcast from Jackson Square will include: The Super Bowl Today, CBS Sports Network’s Super Bowl Live and Inside the Super Bowl, CBS This Morning, CBS Evening News, Face the Nation, The Talk, Rome, and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. The set-up will also house the likes of CBSSports.com, CBS Sports Radio and coverage from CBS affiliates.

On the Air

Despite recent optimism and long talks this week, the NHL turned down the players’ latest offer for a labor deal that would have implemented an eight-year CBA. Negotiations have now broken off at least until the weekend. Players’ Association Director Donald Fehr told reporters that he believes that the lockout will not be resolved soon.

NBC Sports Network will kick off the New Year with a heavy dose of Notre Dame Football, announcing a marathon of 10 hours of programming dedicated to the top-ranked team starting a noon on Jan. 1. The slate will include four games from the season including the matchups against Michigan, Stanford, Pittsburgh and Wake Forest, as well as an encore showing of Onward Notre Dame: South Bend to Soldier Field and Undefeated: 2012 Notre Dame Football Season in Review.

CBS Sports Radio has completed its programming lineup, announcing that Chris Moore will join former football player and current CBS Sports Network analyst Brian Jones as the new co-hosts of CBS Sports Radio’s evening show. The network will launch on Jan. 2 at midnight with the Moore/Jones tandem filling the 6-10p slot.

Tonight, HBO will offer boxing fans can get a ringside seat for the official fighter weigh-in of Pacquiao/Marquez 4. The half-hour special will be hosted by Jim Lampley and air at 6p. In addition, HBO Sports will light up Times Square with a live stream of the weigh-in program on the giant NASDAQ and Reuters video screens at 6p.

CBS offers the 113th meeting of the Army/Navy football classic on Saturday at 3p. CBS Sports Network will be on hand for pre-game coverage of the game starting at noon, beginning with a special telecast the features the traditional “March On” procession when the Brigade of Midshipmen and Corps of Cadets make their entrance. Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson call the action.

Whoever takes home the Heisman Trophy this weekend will continue a new tradition in the media, presenting the Top Ten List on the Late Show with David Letterman on Monday on CBS. This year’s three Heisman Trophy finalists are Texas A&M University quarterback Johnny Manziel, Kansas State University quarterback Collin Klein and University of Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o. Last year saw Baylor’s Robert Griffin III make the presentation on Dec. 12.

MSG Network reports that the Knicks 2012-13 season-to-date ratings are up compared to 2011-12 in both the household and Adult 25-54 demo for the first 13 Nielsen-rated games that could be measured on the network. In game Nielsen ratings in households are up 68% with a 3.22 this season, with a 1.92 in the demo, up 118%. Postgame, the channel is delivering a 1.52 in households for a 105% jump.

Stateside, Toyota is in to sponsor two of NASCAR’s races at Richmond International Speedway, announcing that the weekend of April 26 and 27 will now see the Toyota Owners 400 NASCAR Spring Cup Series race and ToyotaCare 250 Nationwide Series race at the track. “This partnership allows us to align with a premium brand that has been supporting NASCAR for nearly a decade,” said RIR President Dennis Bickmeier. “These multi-year entitlements will allow Richmond International Raceway to continue delivering the high-quality events our fans have enjoyed for 60 years. To put on these NASCAR spectacles, we require two core ingredients: the fans and the sponsors  both of which drive our business and allow us to provide top-notch events.”

Former NASCAR VP of Corporate Communications Jim Hunter will be posthumously inducted into the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame on Jan. 19 in Charlotte, N.C. Hunter joins Pocono Raceway founder and patriarch Dr. Joseph Mattioli, who will also will be inducted posthumously, and pioneer sportscaster Ken Squier in the honor.

Roger Federer now has his own channel on YouTube. The 17-time Grand Slam champion announced that the channel will exhibition matches in South American live on the platform. “I am very excited to launch my new YouTube Channel and be able to deliver to my loyal fans exciting programming that they might not otherwise have an opportunity to see,” Federer said. “It is wonderful that we can start this initiative with these great exhibitions and I hope to be able to deliver additional events, programs and original content on my channel in the future.
