Cynopsis: Kids!

12/05/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, December 5, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Just out in theaters, Twilight has a TV home.  Showtime Networks Inc. and Summit Entertainment enter into an exclusive output deal, under which the pay cable channel will air up to 42 of Summit’s theatrical movie released between 2008-2012.  The terms of the deal were not released.  Alex Fragen, Summit’s President/Domestic Television Distribution handled negotiations for the studio.

It is indeed holiday time for Mattel.  A federal judge has granted Mattel a huge win in regards to its copyright battle with toy company competitor MGA Entertainment, which makes the Bratz fashion dolls.  The judge in the case has ordered MGA to stop making the Bratz dolls as well as ceasing to sell and license the dolls, which have expanded to many more than the original four dolls and now includes numerous accessories and lines, including Bratz Petz, Bratz Boys and Baby Bratz.  Earlier this year a jury found that creator/designer Carter Bryant had developed the original line of four Bratz dolls while still employed by Mattel.  That said, MGA is of course appealing the ruling.  The judge did however provide MGA with a small gift of, for the moment the dolls can remain on retailer shelves, at least until the judge reviews the appeals and motions that will be heard in February 2009.

This week marks Scholastic’s officially release of the new Harry Potter related book, The Tales of Beedle the Bard, which of course is written and even illustrated J.K. Rowling.  Here in the US, one of only seven original hand written and illustrated copies of The Tales of Beedle the Bard (157 pages), is now on display at The New York Public Library’s Humanities and Social Sciences Library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street (the exhibit is free), where it will remain until January 4, 2009.  The exhibit also includes a video of the owner reading one of the tales, and visuals of several pages of the book.  For HP fans around the world The Children’s High Level Group is publishing three versions of the book in cooperation with Scholastic, Bloomsbury and Amazon, available this week as well in the US, UK and online, with all net proceeds will go to supporting the work of the charity.
