Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Friday, December 2, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here .
YouTube has undergone a complete redesign that allows the video site to now put a bigger focus on a user’s video subscriptions, as well as recommendations made on social networks such as Google+ and Facebook. The revamped offering is the result of the video site’s new strategy to shift from being simply a place for a wide assortment of disjointed videos to a destination where users can spend a significant amount of time watching tailored content. New features include an activity stream that documents video uploads, likes, favorites and comments, as well as announces future live events. Users will also be able to sort up to 10 favorite channels on the homepage and will be offered four different page templates to choose from for their own channels. Additional changes are on the horizon as YouTube plans to revamp its mobile offering and bring this channel-heavy mindset to connected devices.
Creative Mobile Technologies, an in-vehicle technology solutions provider that delivers content on nearly 10,000 fully interactive media screens across its in-taxi mobile media network, has signed an agreement with ABC and ABC National Television Sales to provide premium programming inside taxis through ABC’s local television stations and sales forces in major U.S. markets. This includes ABC’s local TV station in New York City, where CMT has installed its technology in around 6,600 taxis. Content will include local news and weather, as well as a “news you can use” feature, all of which will start playing after a passenger enters the cab. The deal will go into effect on New Year’s Day in 2012.
BRB Internacional has allied with Tuenti, a popular social network in Spain, to make many BRB cartoon series available for free streaming to the 12+ million users on the Spanish social site. The companies have plans to upload and air more BRB series and movies on the social channel in the future. “With BRB, we now have new premium content, which will, on occasion, be premiered in exclusive broadcasts,” added Diana Morales, business development manager at Tuenti.
CBS Consumer Products chose e-commerce company TeamFanShop to help launch a new online store for Television City, which went live yesterday. ShopTVCity.com offers products and memorabilia that pay homage and hark back to classic TV shows such as The Twilight Zone, Cheers, Dynasty, Hogan’s Heroes and many more.
YouTube has replaced its Insights tracking service with a more robust analytics platform, according a report from MediaPost. The new offering features a new overview section that provides publishers with more relevant information and in-depth statistics. Through this new platform, YouTube hopes to give clients a better understanding of which videos are generating the most views and subscriptions and for how long viewers are watching the content.
Twitter has finally introduced a self-serve option for its ad platform. Ad buyers can make their purchase directly through the social site. The service is still currently in test mode and is only open to a few advertisers. “This is an important step in continuing to grow Twitter’s business. Our Promoted Products can help small and medium-sized businesses build their audience on Twitter and better engage with the people they want to reach,” said Twitter’s PR representative Matt Graves.
The latest kerfuffle in the tech world is the revelation that software from a company called Carrier IQ monitors and logs virtually every keystroke and action users make on their mobile phone. This includes web searches, text messages and activity on apps, as well as the user’s location. The software comes pre-installed on many mobile phones and, if not for the work of a developer who posted an 18-minute video detailing all of the software’s alarming capabilities, it would have remained hidden from the public eye. Since the controversy has erupted, manufacturers are distancing themselves from the matter. RIM and HTC issued statements yesterday denying responsibility. Apple said it once authorized access to Carrier IQ, but has recently stopped supporting it and has plans to remove it from future software updates.
Yahoo! is hoping to cut a deal by the end of the year that would see it sell off a 20% stake in the company to a private equity firm, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. Three separate bidders, including private equity firm TPG Capital and a group consisting of Microsoft, Silver Lake Partners and others, have reportedly made offers this week for such a slice of the media company. Yahoo!’s board of directors are expected to deliberate over the offers next week. While there is no official timeline or deadline for the sale, the WSJ’s sources say the directors would like to make a decision before the holidays.
Adobe has said it will acquire Efficient Frontier in order to have access to the online ad company’s software that allows marketers to optimize ad buying across multiple channels. Efficient’s technology lets advertisers buy keywords on Google and ads on Facebook, as well as buy display ads across the internet. This deal is another step in Adobe’s path towards expanding and enhancing its suite of services for digital media and marketing. It most recently purchased Auditude, a video ad company, on November 1. Adobe did not disclose the financial terms when announcing the deal.
AT&T is fighting back at the FCC for releasing a report on its analysis of the proposed merger between the wireless carrier and rival T-Mobile USA, which labeled AT&T’s claims for how the deal would positively benefit consumers as not substantive or reliable. The report, the release of which has been considered unorthodox, concluded that such a merger would harm competition and lead to higher prices and job losses. In its rebuttal attacking the lengthy report, AT&T executive vice president James Ciccioni said, “The document is so obviously one-sided that any fair-minded person reading it is left with the clear impression that it is an advocacy piece, and not a considered analysis.” He also argued that the FCC report “cherry-picks” the facts that make the deal look bad.
New data released from video technology company FreeWheel finds that the primetime (time interval with the highest number of views) of an online video is directly proportional to its length. Analyzing more than 11.8 billion video views across FreeWheel’s customer set, which includes Turner, FOX, ESPN, Univision, Discovery Communications and VEVO, the study found that 1pm – 4pm was the best time period for short-form (less than 5 minutes) and mid-form videos (5-20 minutes); while the traditional primetime slot, 8pm – 11pm, was optimal for long-form videos (20+ minutes). Other interesting findings from the report include:
- Video viewing on smartphones increases throughout the day and into the evening.
- Video views on the iPhone and iPod Touch are on the decline by 7% and 26%, respectively. However, more people are watching videos on the iPad, as well as Android devices.
- Video advertising views grew 128% year-over-year, while video views grew 97%, marking it the first quarter in which FreeWheel’s data has seen video ad views growing at a faster rate than video viewing.
The App Business, a London-based company comprising of app specialists and whose founders were part of the team that helped launch the iPhone and iPad, has worked with Unilever Investor Relations to develop and launch the Unilever Investor Centre app for the iOS. The free new corporate app provides features such as live-streaming video of results and presentations, interactive stock charts, a financial calendar, a PDF reader and a customizable dashboard for investors.
A digital version of Consumer Reports magazine is coming to the iPad beginning with the January 2012 issue that debuts on the newsstand on December 6. The interactive app will come free with a subscription to the print publication. However, for potential iPad-only readers, individual issues will be available for $4.99, and digital subscription plans will offer the app for $2.99 per month or $24.99 per year. In addition, the magazine also announced that it has expanded its suite of smartphone apps that are available for both iOS and Android. These apps help consumers in making their purchasing decisions by offering ratings, reviews and advice on a wide variety of products and services.
Multiplatform casual gaming company Oberon Media has hired Isaac Josephson to the position of Vice President, Product. A 20-year veteran of digital media with experience in online content creation and distribution, Oberon will oversee the development and improvement of Oberon’s products. He will also be responsible for optimizing Oberon’s Blaze platform, the company’s new scalable game distribution solution. He will report to the senior vice president of product, marketing and business intelligence, Megan Barbour.

As you’ve probably heard by now, NBC’s critically-acclaimed comedy series, Community, has been taken off the midseason schedule, with no word on what its future entails past the show’s third season. It is without question one of my favorite shows on TV. The series is as much in love with making you laugh as it also is in paying homage to film and television forms. For example, it’s already done great, loving parodies of TV tropes such as the bottle episode and the clips episode; along with fantastic riffs on various movie genres including the western, conspiracy theory thrillers and post-apocalyptic action movies. If you haven’t had the pleasure of already checking this fantastic show out, take a primer via Community’s Facebook fan page, which previews an assortment of great episode and behind-the-scenes content. Then, sit back and catch up before it’s gone. Save Community; six seasons and a movie!
