Cynopsis: Kids!
12/24/10

Good morning. It’s Friday, December 24, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Disney Channel‘s introduces messaging for its new preschool/family-targeted Disney Junior multiplatform brand continues this Sunday, December 26, with the debut of the first in a series of three on-air spots during the network’s plays of Toy Story and Toy Story 2, at 6p and 8p respectively.  The new messages focus on storytelling and characters, and features real kids with their favorite Disney characters.  Each of the spots shows a real kid using their imagination to travel from our world to the world of one of the Disney Junior shows (e.g. Handy Manny, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse etc.).  Set to launch in February 2011, Disney Junior, which is currently known as Playhouse Disney, will introduce content across the daily TV block on Disney Channel, an integrated website, VOD, mobile and paid download platforms.  There will be 25 Disney Junior channels around the world, also currently Playhouse Disney channels, as well as via blocks on broadcast partners. In 2012 Disney Junior will launch as a basic cable and satellite channel in the US.

MORE KIDS STUFF

In New Zealand, TVNZ grows its kid/family and youth programming with the expansion of programming on its government-funded public broadcasting channel TVNZ 7, and the launch of a new commercial free-to-air digital channel (name TBD) aimed at teens/young adults 15-24 in March 2011.

  • TVNZ 7 will add a preschool block that will take programs from its TVNZ 6 channel, as well as adding family-targeted information shows to its lineup.  TVNZ 7 will remain commercial free until 2012, when its funding government situation expires.  Meanwhile, TVNZ 6, also government funded, will shutter in March 2011.
  • The new youth channel will exist both on-air and online, in an effort to provide viewers with interactive and social opportunities.  Programming on the new youth channel is expected to feature a range of genres, including reality and factual entertainment shows, and hosted shows as well as themed nights (e.g. extreme sports, concerts).  This new channel will broadcast midday to midnight, with eight hours of the schedule to feature first run content.

Program Call: Cynopsis Media will be producing our annual NATPE Shopping Guide sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers on Thursday, January 20, the week before NATPE 2011 in Miami.  If you would like to have your programming included, please send us only the following info for your top 5 shows: title, availability date, number of episodes, length, type (i.e., movie, series, special, etc.), genre and your terms (barter, cash, etc.) as well as your company’s stand/booth location.  To be included in this free and highly-viewed special edition, please send your submission to [email protected] no later than Friday, January 14, 2011. Friday Fun Fact: According to the Data Group, grandparents spend an average of $82 per grandchild for a holiday gift, $42 for a birthday gift, $74 for a special occasion such as a graduation, and $19 for other occasions like Easter or Valentine’s Day.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia:   In 1978 this was the toy to have for the holiday season – parents across the country camped out in front of their local toy store hours in advance of the shipments arriving, just to be sure their little ones at home could say they too had one of the most coveted toys of the season.   The toy line was soon known as “the greatest success story in the long history of dolls.”  What doll is this?    CABBAGE PATCH DOLLS  Kudos to: Joel Maxwell/NY; Kathy May-Fisher Price/East Aurora; John Carlo-Comcast Networks/NY; Mike Doyle-Spot on Media/Madison; Lynn Costello-Hawthorne Direct/Phoenix; LeNea Ricks-KIDK KXPI/Idaho Falls; Barb Throm-creative LAB/St. Louis; Katrina Cicala-Prairie Home Prods/St. Paul; Roslyn Bibby Madison-FX/LA; Ken Van Fossen-Mattel/El Segundo; Tammi Denbow-Fox/LA; Lou Fazio-The Hub/Burbank; Tanya Pirozzo-Corus Ent/Toronto; Pam Lehn-Corus Ent/Toronto; Stephanie Kravos-Tim Hortons/Ontario

No Trivia Question today … Cynopsis is now off for the holidays, back and in your in-box on Monday, January 3, 2011.  Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a very Happy and Healthy New Year!
