Cynopsis: Kids!

12/21/07

Good morning. It’s Friday, December 21, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing.

DreamWorks Animation has entered into a deal with Technicolor Services, a unit of France-based Thomson SA, to produce CGI animated feature films in India. The financial terms of the agreement were not released.  Building off of Thomson’s investment earlier this year in Paprikaas Animation Studios, the joint Technicolor and DreamWorks movies will be produced at the 3D animation studio in Bangalore.  Under the deal, DreamWorks Animation will assist Technicolor in recruiting, training and development of animation talent to work at the Paprikaas facility in India.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Entertainment Rights’ fox puppet Basil Brush to star in a modern day version of the classic Saturday morning series Multi-Coloured Swap Shop, which originally aired 1976-82.  The BBC has commissioned the new live series 13-week, which will be titled Basil’s Swap Shop, from Entertainment Rights and will be produced by The Foundation, a unit of Rdf Media Group, for air Saturday mornings on BBC Two, from January 5 through March 22 2008 (9-10a).  Co-hosting with Basil on Basil’s Swap Shop is human actor Barney Harwood (Prank Patrol).  The new studio based live series will feature a mix of interactive elements, comedy sketches and celebrity guests (who will show-up to swap with kids as well) and an online component.  Beginning December 26 the Swap Shop website will be up and running at BBC.co.uk/cbbc, where kids will be able to leave details of their swap.  The sixth season of The Basil Brush Show ran this fall on CBBC and BBC1.

Elsewhere, BBC Drama is looking for two new teen-targeted series for air on BBC Three and BBC Switch, the latter is a multi-pronged radio, TV and broadband service for Teens 12-16.  Specifically, Ben Stephenson, Head of Drama Commissioning explains they are, “seeking relevant stories that the target audience can engage with …”, with the goal of launching the new series in winter 2009, the shows will benefit from the support of a fully integrated multimedia campaign.  The new series will come on the heels of the recently commissioned dramas on the channel, including Spooks Liberty, P.A.s, Phoo Action, Being Human, Dis/Connected, West 10 LDN, Things I Haven’t Told You and Mrs Inbetweeny.

Crystal Sky Pictures’ The feature film adaptation of the video game Tekken will reportedly be directed by Dwight Little, per Variety.  Tekken, a teen-rated martial arts game is published by Namco, which is hugely popular in Japan, will begin production in Shreveport LA in February 2008.  Namco plans to release the sixth Tekken game in North America this January 2008.

MORE KIDS STUFF

A new, multi-year agreement between Disney-ABC International Television and Russian state broadcaster Channel One will cover the licensing of features, live action series, animated shows, and made-for-TV movies in addition to the launch of monthly family film timeslot, The Wonderful World of Disney.  The slot will run monthly for 10 months a year.

Monday Night Football on ESPN and ESPN HD gets a visit from Miley Cyrus, Disney’s Hannah Montana, this Monday night, December 24.  Cyrus will be featured in a pre-taped holiday-themed open that will air before the Denver Broncos vs. Sand Diego Chargers game at 8p.  In the segment Cyrus points to memorable moments of the 2007 Monday Night Football season.
