Good morning. It’s Friday, December 1, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
All hail, the November sweep is dead! Okay, it’s not really dead Dorothy, but it is over. Leading the march among the A18-49 crowd was ABC with a 4.1/11, a share point better than the tie between CBS and NBC, both averaging a 3.8/10. Fox was #4 with a 3.0/8 and The CW averaged a 1.5/4 in the demo. As usual, CBS led among the total viewers with 13.0 million, followed by ABC’s 11.6 million. All the numbers with percents up or down vs. last year, are below in the ratings section.
Tonight’s Premiere:
BBC America: My Family at 8p, Worst Week of My Life at 840p

Elsewhere, the dispute between Sinclair Broadcast Group and Mediacom Communications had seemingly reached an impasse with Sinclair expected to come off the cable system as of midnight last night. However, in the final hours, an agreement to extend the current deal until January 5, 2007, was reached, giving both sides a couple more weeks to get this figured out. At the center of the dispute is the retransmission fees Sinclair is demanding for carriage on the Mediacom systems, reaching approx 800,000 homes in Sinclair markets.
The NFL Network scored a top-rated telecast when it broadcast the Denver Broncos vs. Kansas City Chiefs match on Thanksgiving night. The 8p November 23 game delivered a 2.8 HH national rating, and a final 8.0 HH rating within the NFL Network universe of 40 million homes.
Lifetime has backed away from two series Lovespring International and Angela’s Eyes, choosing not to renew either one. Both shows debuted last summer and did moderately well, but just not well enough for a second dance. The comedy series Lovespring averaged 839,000 total viewers; while crime drama Angela’s Eyes delivered 1.73 million total viewers.
Coming Monday, the official launch of CableU , the subscriber-based website for programmers and producers alike, in partnership by Cynopsis and CABLEready. I think you’ll agree – the depth of useful information is pretty outstanding.
A&E Network has bestowed a “kiss” of approval to renew Gene Simmons Family Jewels for a sophomore season. Production on the 20 new episodes about Gene and his eccentric family has begun, with an unspecified premiere date for next year. The series is produced for A&E by The Greif Company/A Day With, Inc and the Gene Simmons Company.
CBS is looking at a new untitled project from the creators of Two and a Half Men, Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn, for a comedy starring Allison Janney in her first TV role since The West Wing, according to Variety. This was somewhat expected as the network had signed a talent holding deal with Janney, with producer Tagline Television.
Lifetime Television has ordered a go for the drama project Army Wives produced by The Mark Gordon Company and Touchstone Television, based on the book Under the Sabers: The Unwritten Code of Army Wives by Tanya Biank. The 13-episode drama, which will debut next March, will be filmed on location in Charleston, SC and will focus on four women and one man living on an army base and the pressures they face being part of a military family. Kim Delaney and Catherine Bell will lead the ensemble cast.
CBS has ordered a pilot of another project called Fugly, about three beauty-challenged sisters who pool their money to buy one an extreme makeover. The plan then is for the three to capitalize on the sister’s newfound good looks. The pilot script was written by Greg Garcia, the creator of My Name is Earl, and will be produced by 20th Century Fox TV, per Hollywood Reporter. The script was originally written for Fox a couple of years ago, but wasn’t picked up.
Sling Media, Inc. has named Jason Hirschhorn as President and Ben White as CCO of a new division, Sling Media Entertainment Group starting up in New York. They will head a team charged with delivering new applications, services and experiences for Slingbox customers. Both guys will spearhead current and future collaborations with creators, distributors and advertisers.
Coincidentally, an Email to the Editor came in yesterday regarding the Slingbox … it’s at the base of this email. –Cyn
ReelzChannel has appointed David Anderson as VP/Human Resources. Based in Los Angeles, David will manage the company’s human resources department and be involved with recruiting, training and development and administrative functions.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1959: The Antarctica Treaty is signed, banning armed forces and weapons testing from the entire continent, parts of which had been claimed by several nations. An armed clash between Argentine and British forces and the attractiveness of the continent for nuclear testing prodded the United States and the USSR, along with ten other nations with claims, to forswear military activity. It was a modest first step toward arms control during the Cold War.

RE: Sling Box
Sling it on…
If you are a frequent traveler and haven’t yet discovered the sling box, this article is worth a read. My husband is a football fanatic and that is putting it mildly. So when his employer offered us an assignment in Hong Kong, his first concern was keeping up with his favorite team. As luck would have it, we discovered the sling box. Attach this contraption to a cable box at home, download the software onto your computer and all you need is a hi-speed Internet connection to watch American television anywhere in the world. We actually used it to watch live TV on the flight between New York and Hong Kong and it worked – who would’ve thought!
Much as I love this piece of invention and bless it’s creators each day, I can’t help but wonder how the networks and advertising community have reacted to it. I think the sling box offers a unique opportunity to capture an already engaged audience. If someone is going through the trouble of watching a show or game on their laptop, in flight or after a long day at work thousands of miles away, they are serious viewers. I am surprised that no advertiser has joined hands with sling media to leverage this opportunity. After all, amidst all the buzz about losing viewers to DVR and TiVo and the need for innovative advertising, here is another opportunity waiting to be exploited. The last time I checked, the sling box is already available in ten countries including the US, UK and Canada. While some might question the future of such a device, I have full confidence in it. Social networking sites, barely noticed a couple of years ago, are the hot bed for advertisers today. Granted that the sling box is extremely niche at the moment, but we’ve all heard of long tail, right?
